"Tribute" (リリースする '''Tribute'Rirīsu Suru'') is primarily used as a verb. Previously, known it was phrased as "offer as a Tribute" (生け贄に捧げる '''Release'Ikenie ni Sasageru'' ) in the ''OCG'' and the ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D'sOCG]]'' and /''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXALTCG]]'' anime and , as well as '''Sacrifice''' in the ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! (second series anime)|Yu-Gi-Oh!]]'' and ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! GX]]'' animes, anime. "Sacrifice" is usually a way of voluntarily [[send]]ing a card from your side of the [[Playing Field|field]] to the [[Graveyard]], also often used to [[activate]] a [[card effect]] or perform a [[Summon]]. When you Tribute a card it is not considered [[destroy]]ed. Unless the a card specifically states that you can permits a player to Tribute your monsters in their [[hand]] or under their opponent's monsters like control (such as "[[The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode]]", "[[Soul Exchange]]" or , and "[[Lava GolemBlack Luster Ritual]]"), a player they can only Tribute monsters on their side of the fieldthey [[control]]. While normally only monsters can be Tributed, some cards (such as several "[[True Draco]]" cards and "[[Kiryu]]") allow [[Spell Card|Spell]] and [[Trap Card]]s to be Tributed.

When Tributing for a card effect, the Tribute(s) While Tributed cards are considered [[Costssent]], which means players cannot respond to the Tributes with card effectsGraveyard by default, since paying they can still be successfully Tributed even if a Cost has no card effect would cause them to be sent to another location (e.g. due to the effect of "[[Spell SpeedMacro Cosmos]]. There are some Card effects that would Tribute monsters thoughon the field in the ''OCG''/''TCG'' instead send them from the field to the Graveyard in Rush Duels. For example, in the ''OCG''/''TCG'', that cannot be Tributed under any circumstances (an example of this would be "[[ScapegoatCannon Soldier]]s" tokens that it leaves behindTributes monsters to use its effect, whereas in Rush Duels "[[Cannon Soldier (Rush Duel)|Cannon Soldier]]" sends monsters from the field to the Graveyard.
