OCG Rulings

  • If this card was Set by the effect of an "Altergeist" card, it can be activated during the same turn it was Set.[1]
  • This card's effect that sends an "Altergeist" monster from your hand to the GY is the effect that is applied when this card resolves. (It does not target, and cannot be activated during the Damage Step.)[1]
  • If there are no "Altergeist" monsters in your hand, you cannot apply this effect, therefore you cannot activate this card.[1]
  • This card's effect that negates the effect of a Trap Card starts a Chain. (Sending 1 "Altergeist" monster from your hand to the GY is the cost to activate this effect, and cannot be activated during the Damage Step.)[1]
  • This effect does not target. It is an effect that is activated by chaining directly to the activation of an opponent's Trap Card. (You cannot chain this effect to an opponent's Trap effect.)[1]

Q&A Rulings

A: In this scenario, if you no longer have an "Altergeist" monster in your hand when "Altergeist Haunted Rock" resolves, the effect to send one from your hand to the GY cannot be applied. Even in that case, since "Altergeist Haunted Rock" was activated, it remains face-up in the Spell & Trap Zone.[2]
A: When resolving the Chain Link upon being activated, "Altergeist Haunted Rock" applies the effect that sends 1 "Altergeist" monster from your hand to the GY. The effect that negates the effect of an opponent's Trap Card is one that can only be activated while "Altergeist Haunted Rock" is already face-up in the Spell & Trap Zone after having been previously activated. Therefore, even if you chain a Set "Altergeist Haunted Rock" to an opponent's Trap Card, you cannot use this effect.[3][4]
