There seems to be some kind of relation in the known history of the individual Dark Signers: Kiryu became a Dark Signer after he has arrested and allegedly killed by the security; Carly also became a Dark Signer when she died after her first duel with Divine. The rest of the Dark Signer's history is untold. Though in Misty's flashblack she is shown having been rushed to the hospital in severe or even fatal condition when her Earthbound God appeared before her.
A Dark Signer is usually transformed into one by having enough will to not want to die. Misty says so to Carly in [[Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's - Episode 39039|episode 39]]. Carly really didnt want to die, because she wanted to see Jack. However, this is not confirmed for the rest of the Dark Signers if this is true. It may be true for Misty and Kiryu, Misty wanted revenge on [[Akiza Izinski]], and Kiryu wanted revenge on Yusei for turning him in, supposedly.
