Game State refers to the situation of a Duel, such as what Cards have been Played and are in Play, what the Life Points for both players are, and so on. Game State can be referred to as early, mid, and late game (though this is often not the case).

In some of the Yu-Gi-Oh! video games, the background music changes depending on the Duel's Game State, i.e. how many life points the opponent or player has, or how long that duel has currently gone on for.
