'''"The Shadow Duelist, Part 1"''', known as '''"Demon Dark Daemon Deck of Darkness"''' in the Japanese version, is the fifth episode of the ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh GX]]'' anime. It first aired in Japan on November 3, 2004 and in the United States on October 17, 2005.

[[Jaden Yuki]], [[Syrus Truesdale]] and [[Chumley Huffington]] are in their dorm, telling ghost stories using their cards. They would draw a card, the higher the [[levelLevel]], the scarier the story. After drawing the Level 4 "[[Earthbound Spirit (anime)|Earthbound Spirit]]", Syrus tells a story about a swamp monster that lured a boy into its grasps with a "[[Dark Magician (anime)|Dark Magician]]" card. Jaden draws the Level 1 "[[Sinister Serpent (anime)|Sinister Serpent]]" told them about when he was a kid, he used to hear voices he never recognized coming from his closet, possibly [[Yubel (character)|Yubel]]. Nothing was ever there but his cards. The strange things was, Jaden had been recently hearing the voices again, referring to [[Winged Kuriboh (character)|Winged Kuriboh]]. [[Lyman Banner|Professor Banner]] comes to join in and ended up drawing the Level 12 "[[Five-Headed Dragon (later anime)|Five-Headed Dragon]]". He told them about an [[Abandoned Dorm]] on the edge of the island that had been shut down when many students went disappearing. The rumor was that the kids were getting caught in [[Shadow Game]]s, Duels played using the [[Millennium Items]]. Syrus had heard of the dorm before, so Jaden decided they should go the following night and check it out. [[Vellian Crowler|Dr. Crowler]] overheard them and decided to use it to his advantage in getting rid of Jaden.

Meanwhile, in the city, a mysterious Duelist had beaten this other weak Duelist and claims to have stolen his soul using a [[Millennium Pendant (Titan's item)|pendant]] resembling the [[Millennium Puzzle]]. He instructs his opponent to leave all his rare cards for him, and he is seen dropping "[[Obnoxious Celtic GuardGuardian (anime)|Obnoxious Celtic Guardian]]" and "[[Electromagnetic Turtle (anime)|Electromagnetic Turtle]]". The mysterious Duelist was a tall man with a mask on and a trench-coat. After winning, he got a call on his cell phone. Someone told him about [[Duel Academy]] and he agreed to come. The following day, Crowler watched Jaden fall asleep in class again and was thinking about how this class would be his last. That night, Crowler met the mysterious Duelist from the city by the lighthouse. He reveals himself as [[Titan]], the Shadow Duelist. Crowler hires him to scare Jaden, so that the latter will exit Duel Academy and cease irking Crowler. In the English version, he states he'll send Jaden to the [[Shadow Realm]], while in the Japanese version, he informs Crowler that he charges three months pay, regardless of the job.

Meanwhile, Jaden, Syrus and Chumley walked to the abandoned dorm where they saw the rose and Alexis. She yelled at them for being there and said they'll be expelled if they're caught. Alexis said that the rumors about the disappearing students were true because one of those students was her brother, which explains the rose. Jaden still wanted to see the dorm though , so they went inside, but . But after leaving , Alexis was kidnapped by Titan. As the boys searched the dorm, they found most of the walls were covered in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. Meanwhile, Alexis woke up and found herself tied up in a coffin. Titan said she was being used as bait for his trap. As she screamed, the boys heard her and ran to find her, seeing her "[[Etoile Cyber (anime)|Etoile Cyber]]" card on the ground. They located her in a cave connected to the dorm.

[[Titan]] [[Draw a card|draws]]. He then [[Normal Summon]]s "[[Infernalqueen Archfiend (anime)|Infernalqueen Archfiend]]" (900/1500) in [[Attack Position]]. Due to the [[effect]] of "Infernalqueen Archfiend", he can increase the [[ATK]] of all 1 "[[Archfiend]]" [[Monster Card|monster]]s wil be increased by 1000 as long as "Infernalqueen Archfiend" is [[face-up]] ("Infernalqueen Archfiend": 900 → 1900/1500ATK). Titan then [[activate]]s "[[Pandemonium (anime)|Pandemonium]]". Now neither player has to [[pay Life Points ]] [[LP]] for the [[Maintenance Cost]] of an "Archfiend" monster during the [[Standby Phase]]. When an "Archfiend " monster is [[destroy]]ed by a card effect and sent to the Graveyard, that player can [[add a card|add]] 1 one "Archfiend" monster with a lower [[Level]] than the destroyed monster from his [[Main Deck|Deck]] to his [[hand]].

[[Jaden Yuki|Jaden]] draws "[[Hero Signal(anime)|Hero Signal]]". Jaden's hand contains "[[Elemental HERO Hero Avian(anime)|Elemental Hero HERO Avian]]", "[[Polymerization (anime)|Polymerization]]", "[[Mirror Force (later anime)|Mirror Force]]", "[[Emergency Provisions (later anime)|Emergency Provisions]]", "Mirror Force" and "[[Mirror Gate (anime)|Mirror Gate]]". He then Normal Summons "Elemental Hero Avian" (1000/1000) in Attack Position and [[Set]]s two cards.

Titan draws. He then Normal Summons "[[Terrorking Archfiend (anime)|Terrorking Archfiend]]" (2000 → 3000/1500) in Attack Position since he controls [[control]]s an "Archfiend" monster. He then activates the effect of "Infernalqueen Archfiend" to increase the ATK of "TerrorkingArchfiend" (2000 -> 3000 ATK). "Terrorking Archfiend" then [[attack]]s "Avian", but Jaden activates his [[face-down]] "Mirror Gate" to switch the sides [[control]] of both battling monsters before damage is calculated. However, however Titan activates the effect of "TerrorkingArchfiend" to roll a [[die]]. If the result is a two or five, Jaden's "Mirror Gate" will be negated [[negate]]d and destroyed[[destroy]]ed. Titan gets a two, so "Mirror Gate" is negated and destroyed. "Terrorking Archfiend" then destroys "Avian" (Jaden : 4000 → 2000LP). Jaden then activates his face-down "[[Hero Signal]]" to [[Special Summon]] "[[Elemental HERO Hero Clayman(anime)|Elemental Hero HERO Clayman]]" (800/2000) in [[Defense Position]].

Jaden draws "[[Pot of Greed (anime)|Pot of Greed]]" and subsequently activates it to draw two cards. Jaden He then activates "[[Polymerization (anime)|Polymerization]]" to [[Fusion Material|fuse ]] "Clayman" with and "[[Elemental HERO Hero Sparkman(anime)|Elemental Hero HERO Sparkman]]" in order to [[Fusion Summon]] "[[Elemental HERO Hero Thunder Giant(anime)|Elemental Hero HERO Thunder Giant]]" (2400/1500) in Attack Position. Since "Thunder Giant" was Fusion Summoned, Jaden activates its effect to destroy "Terrorking Archfiend", but Titan activates the effect of "Terrorking Archfiend" to roll a die. Titan gets a five, so the effect of "Thunder Giant" is negated and "Thunder Giant" is destroyed.

 * Jaden is shown to have a second "Mirror Force" in his hand. However , in the next episode, the second "Mirror Force" is not in his hand anymore , and it's replaced with "[[Mirage of Nightmare (anime)|Mirage of Nightmare]]".
