Types are a means to split monsters into groups (in a broader way to what Attributes do) in order to enable Support Cards granting various effects, to a specific order of monsters. Players use Field Spell Cards to use Type divides to their advantage.
Each monster has one Type. There are twenty-two different legal Types in the TCG and OCG. Divine-Beast is exclusive to the Egyptian Gods and was considered Illegal, although it is now legal in the OCG and TCG as of January (with the first legal English-print God Card, "Obelisk the Tormentor"). Immortal only appears in Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses.
When "type" is written with a lowercase "t", it does not refer to this category of monster. It instead refers to the three main types of cards; Monster, Spell or Trap. Those three terms are usually given in brackets after this to avoid confusion. For example "Ordeal of a Traveler".

Overlap with attributes
Many Types tend to be associated with certain Attributes. Types are not listed here if one or two Attributes do not clearly cover a majority of monsters with that Type (for instance, Dragon-Type monsters are fairly evenly divided between three different Attributes, so "Dragon" is not listed here). Types that are listed here are only listed with the Attributes that cover a majority of monsters of that Type.
