Type
A Type (Tribe or Family (
Each monster has one Type. There are twenty-three different legal Types in the TCG and OCG. Divine-Beast is exclusive to the Egyptian Gods and was considered Illegal until the first legal-print God Card, "Obelisk the Tormentor", was created. Immortal only appears in Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses.
When "type" is written with a lowercase "t", it refers instead to the three main types of cards.

These Types exist within the OCG and TCG.

Non-OCG/TCG
35px Immortal is a Type appearing in the video game Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses.
Human is a Type appearing only in a character's fantasy in the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's anime.
Black Magic, White Magic, Sea Beast, Illusion Magic, and Dragon Magic are among the additional Types used in the Bandai card game.

??? is used to indicate that a monster's Type is unknown.
Overlap with attributes
Many Types tend to be associated with certain Attributes. Types are not listed here if one or two Attributes do not clearly cover a majority of monsters with that Type (for instance, Dragon-Type monsters are fairly evenly divided between three different Attributes, so "Dragon" is not listed here). Types that are listed here are only listed with the Attributes that cover a majority of monsters of that Type.
- DARK: Fiend, Machine, Spellcaster, Zombie
- DIVINE: Divine-Beast, Creator God
- EARTH: Beast, Beast-Warrior, Dinosaur, Insect, Machine, Plant, Psychic, Rock, Warrior
- FIRE: Dinosaur, Pyro

- WATER: Aqua, Fish, Sea Serpent
- WIND: Psychic, Winged Beast
Card type
Certain cards, such as "Ordeal of a Traveler", mention the term "type" (with a lowercase "t") in their effect; this term does not refer to Types of monsters, but instead to the three main types of cards: Monster, Spell, and Trap. Those three terms are usually given in brackets after this to avoid confusion.
A fourth type, Virus, was introduced in the manga. In the anime, Virus Cards were instead treated as Spell or Trap Cards, and all virus cards released in the OCG and TCG (with the exception of "Giant Germ", which is a monster) have been released as Trap Cards.
