Trap MonstersMonster are is a type of semi-officialCitation needed term used to describe Continuous Trap Card s with effects that is Special Summoned themselves [[Treats Trap Cards as monsters|as a Monster Card after . In some cases, once the monster has been Summoned, it is activatedboth a monster and a Trap Card simultaneously, and in other cases, the Trap Card will simply Special Summon itself as a Monster Card solely. In The card's text will specifically state which is the case. ==Characteristics==All Trap Monsters have an effect to Special Summon themselves as a monster. All Trap Monsters are either Normal Traps or Continuous Traps—there are no mangaCounter Trap, they s that are a separate type Trap Monsters. Depending on the specifics of the effect that Special Summons it, the Trap Monster may Special Summon itself from the Spell & Trap CardZone (when the card is activated) or the Graveyard(due to the Trap Card's effect). Whether or not the card is still treated as a Trap Card also depends on the effect that Special Summoned it.<!--All Trap Monsters summoned from ST zone do so at card activation; no Trap Monsters are summoned from ST zone from an effect activation separate from their card activation (flip face-up)-->
All these cards are If a Trap Monster is treated as both Monster Cards and an Trap CardsEquip Card while they are Summoned to from the field, and as such, take up both a Monster Card Zone and a Spell & Trap Card Zone at the same time(e.g. If they are negated with "JinzoRelinquished" or "), it is treated only as an Royal DecreeEquip Spell Card", they will return to the Spell & not a Trap Card Zone as Continuous Trap Cards with no effect, and will remain there even after "Jinzo" or "Royal Decree" are removedMonster Card.citation needed
===Still a Trap Card===Trap Monsters that are typically used still treated as an emergency defense, to stonewall an opponent Trap Cards after being Summoned include the text "("Metal Reflect Slime" This card is particularly useful in this regardalso still a Trap.), but they are also used to provide quick Tribute Fodder for higher-level monsters ("Metal Reflect Slime" is great when combined with "Level Eater"), such as part of the effect that Special Summons them. All such Trap Monsters are Traps, and can in some cases be used offensively as well. Also, because they don't count as monsters while in a player's Deck or Graveyard, some effects might work on them as a are exclusively Special Summoned from the Spell & Trap CardZone, while others (like at the effect activation of "Morphing Jar #2") don't see them as a monster. This can be helpful in some cases (see All-Out Attacks OTK)the Trap Card.
Another use for As they are considered both monsters and Trap Monsters is for Synchro Summoning or Xyz Summoning. Since most Cards, these Trap Monsters are Level 4, they can be used to quickly Synchro Summon a Level 5-8 monster or Xyz Summon a Rank 4 monsteraffected by effects that affect monsters (e.g. "Metal Reflect Slime", which is too high a level to be useful for a Synchro Summon, can be used for Rank 10 Monsters such as "Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav MaxDark Hole") and effects that affect Traps (e. However, if combined with a level 1 Tuner monster, can be also used to Synchro Summon 1 "Star Eater"g. "Shape SisterHarpie's Feather Duster", a Level 2 Tuner, can be used to assist in Synchro Summoning).
"Despite being Trap Cards, after being Summoned they only use a Monster Zone and do not use a Spell & Trap Zone. (Prior to the Master Rules April 1st 2020 Revision, they used both a Imperial CustomMonster Zone" makes Continuous and a Spell & Trap Cards indestructibleZone after being Summoned. If you control a copy of "Imperial Custom" and However, despite preventing a Spell & Trap MonsterZone from being used, the Trap Monster will 's card was placed in a Monster Zone and was not be able considered to be destroyed by battle OR by a in the Spell & Trap Zone.)
====Interactions with activation conditions====If a card or effect that specifically destroys monsters (e.g. "Offerings to the Doomed", "Mirror Force") is activated to destroy such a Trap Monsters may also Monster, cards that can only be useful in activated when a monster would be destroyed (e.g. "UriaMy Body as a Shield Deck as it will most likely need more monster support and these cards ") can not only provide itbe activated, but cards that can only activate when a Trap would be destroyed (e.g. "Fake Trap") cannot be used as activated. Likewise, if a card or effect that specifically destroys Traps (e.g. "Space Typhoon to Summon ", "Uria, Lord of Searing FlamesHeavy Storm" as well as give him extra ) is activated to destroy such a Trap Monster, cards that only activate in response to effects that would destroy Trap Cards can be activated, but effects that only activate in response to effects that destroy monsters cannot. If a card or effect is activated that can destroy either monsters or Trap Cards (e.g. "ATKRaigeki Break points"), either of the aforementioned cards can be activated in response.
====Returning to the Spell & Trap Zone====If such a Trap Monster's Trap effects are negated (e.g. due to "Jinzo", "Royal Decree"), that Trap Monster returns to the Spell & Trap Zone as a face-up Continuous Trap Card, and remains there face-up—only treated as a Trap Card—even if its effects later cease to be negated. If such a Trap Monster is flipped face-down after being Special Summoned (e.g. due to "Book of Moon" ), it is used against Set in the Spell & Trap Zone as a Trap Card again. In either case, if there are no available Spell & Trap Zones for the Trap Monster to be placed in when it is returned there, then the Trap Monster is sent to the Graveyard via game mechanics. ===Not a Trap Card===Trap Monsters that are not treated as Trap Cards after being Summoned include the text "(This card is NOT treated as a Trap.)" as part of the effect that Special Summons them. These Trap Monsters either have an already active effect that Special Summons them from the Graveyard as a monster (in which case they can be either a Normal Trap Monsteror Continuous Trap), or have an effect that Special Summons them upon their card activation (in which case they are always a Normal Trap). All Trap Monsters that Special Summon themselves from the Graveyard specifically are not treated as Traps after being Summoned. As they are only considered monsters, these Trap Monsters are only affected by effects that affect monsters. If such a Trap Monster is set flipped face-down after being Summoned, it is Set in the Monster Zone like any other monster. After being Summoned, they only use a Monster Zone and do not use a Spell & Trap Zone. (This was the case even before the Master Rules April 1st 2020 Revision.) ==Play style==Trap Monsters, whether as members of a distinct archetype (such as "Golden Land" Continuous Trap Cards) or simply generic cards (such as "Statue of Anguish Pattern"), form a slow control-based strategy that attempts to maximize card advantage or some form of utility from each Trap Card again Monster Summoned: whether the individual Trap has its own effect on Summon, or another card, such as "Anguish Pattern", generates support advantage and/or removal. "Top Hat Hare the Silhouette Magician" and "BBS - Be Back Site" were the first cards to directly Set from the Deck Continuous Traps that can be activated Special Summon themselves. ==List of Trap Monsters==List of "Trap Monster" cards===OCG/TCG==={| class="wikitable sortable card-list" |! It is usually a good idea to have "Trap Eater" and "Double Snare" and "Splendid Venus" in the Side Deck of a Deck using high concentrations of these cards, so that you are capable of destroying cards such as "Royal Decree" and "Jinzo" which would cause your Trap Monsters to become useless cards on the field. "Magic Planter" works well if the opponent uses "Jinzo" or another card that negates it and makes it useless. "Magic Planter" allows you to send to the Graveyard a face-up Continuous Trap Card from your side to free up its zone while also allowing you to draw 2 cards.
* Keeping "Judgment of Anubis" on this is also very good to make sure that cards like "Mystical Space Typhoon" controlled by your opponent won't hurt you. Not only that, if your opponent tries to destroy your monster traps with other cards like "Dark Hole" or "Lightning Vortex", you can also use this card, since your opponent is still trying to destroy your Trap Cards with spells
