番人

I prefer to translate 番人 as "Watchman" because the word essentially means "person standing at the gate or door". The word "Guardian" is not completely wrong but in my opinion, it is extrapolated from the aforementioned meaning.

Also, 番犬 is usually translated as "Watchdog".  HHT   07:56, December 12, 2016 (UTC)
