Forum:Ryou Bakura

What is up with people on this wiki trying to claim that Bakura's first name isn't Ryou/Ryo in the anime? That's absolutely ridiculous; why is it even up for discussion? The whole thing stems from certain English speaking fans being unwilling to learn or understand the Japanese culture that gave them YuGiOh in the first place. IT's nonsense, and I'm not afraid to explain why:

1. The Japanese honorifics for Bakura and Kaiba were one of the only things carried over to the dub. It's why they don't call them Seto and Ryou. And clearly, people arguing for this change don't seem to understand that people from Western countries can refer people by their last names, too. I've seen people do it all the time for a number of reasons, including as terms of endearment, nicknames, or even as a sign of disdain for a person. Kaiba's dub has him refer to Joey simply as "Wheeler" continuously; that's a perfect example of it being used for disdain. And news flash: people trying to make excuses like "BUT THIS IS AMERICA!!! HE HAS TO DO IT THE AMERICAN WAY!!!!!" just end up sounding horrifyingly ignorant and too lazy to learn about the way different cultures do things. Does "Bakura" sound like an American or European name to you? No? Well, that's because it isn't. It's a Japanese name, whether dubbed, subbed, or written. The show being dubbed into English doesn't change that. Is it really so hard to accept such a minor cultural difference?

2.He shares his last name with his family members. Their family name is BAKURA. That doesn't change suddenly just because of English translations or dubs. That's just certain English speakers being too lazy to flip the names around or figure out something they don't understand. -__-

3. The claims that the dub changed his name to "Bakura Ryou" are misunderstanding and misinformation at best. It's pretty obvious that the "Bakura Ryou" on the official YuGiOh site is a simple translation error, especially considering the other errors on the page. After all, they call Thief King Bakura "Bandit King Bakura" solely because it's the literal translation, but I'm pretty sure they use "Thief" in the dub.

4. I've seen people claiming the guidebooks are "proof" to an anime name change. But that's not even remotely accurate because the guidebooks are for the MANGA. They're MANGA guidebooks that use the ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAMES. In other words, it sounds like another example of a translation error where they forgot to flip the name.

So to wrap up, this is absolutely a ridiculous change to make, and I can't believe the wiki is even humoring it.MorganaRox96 (talkcontribs) 09:21, August 25, 2017 (UTC)

This was discussed at Talk:Bakura Ryou#Name Needs to be Changed. It's been revisited with MorganaRox's latest points at Talk:Bakura Ryou#Dub name revisited. If anyone has any points, they'd like to add, can they add them on that page to keep the conversation together? -- Deltaneos (talk) 21:46, August 25, 2017 (UTC)
