The card text of altar for tribute state select one monster you control and send it to the graveyard and increase your life point by the same amount of the original attack.

It show in the card ruling sending a monster card to the graveyard is a cost, and than it also show you can send a token to the graveyard as a cost, and you would not gain any life point because the token is remove from the field.

According to other card ruling other card if a cost to activated the card requires the card to be send to the gravyard and the card cannot be send to the graveyard because it is a token monster you cannot activated the card.

Is sending a monster card to the graveyard is a cost to activated the card, or a cost to receive life points?96.44.82.53 (talk) 00:12, November 16, 2010 (UTC)

sending a monster card to the graveyard ia a cost to activate Altar for Tribute. the reason why you don't get any life points when you send a token is because the ATK is checked when the monster is in the grave, and since a token can't be in the grave, you dont get any life points. Why a token monster can be sent to the graveyard as a cost to activated a card if it never reach the graveyard?96.44.82.53 (talk) 14:28, November 16, 2010 (UTC)

good point. actually, the Card Rulings concerning Token Monster state that "Token Monsters can be used to pay costs as long as the cost doesn't require it to go to a specific place outside the field; the Graveyard, Main Deck, hand or Removed from Play Zone." thus, you shouldn't be able to sacrifice a token. there are similiar exceptions though like Unibird. The reason why you can send to the Graveyard a Token with Altar for Tribute's cost is BKSS.
Also if a cost sends a monster to the Removed Zone it can send a Token. (The Token will disappear though)! The Removed Zone is an exception to the rule that says that Tokens cannot be sent to a specific place by a Cost.

Can you activated altar for tribute if you have (Macro Cosmos face-up on the field) and a token monster on the field?96.44.82.53 (talk) 20:11, November 16, 2010 (UTC)

sending a monster to the grave is a cost. Macro prevents that. And even with a token, you can't even attempt to send to the grave so you can't pay the costs under any circumstances while it is on the field, so you can't activate it. -dest- (talkcontribs) 20:26, November 16, 2010 (UTC)
