Alright, these two Synchro evolutions keep the rivalry between Stardust and Red Dragon fresh. Question is: Which of these two cards is overall better? Give your opinion and back it up with legitimate evidence.

I would say Shooting Star Dragon with the advantage of speed, which is what the game is all about now.

  • Shooting Star Dragon requires 1 tuner while Scar-Red requires 2. With the new addtion of Dread Dragon, you can just have one Dread dragon be destroyed to bring another one to your hand and wait til you synchro summon Stardust and boom, next turn or that turn Shooting Star. Much faster. Plus I'm more of a Stardust Fan. Aznskills90214 (talkcontribs) 23:37, June 26, 2010 (UTC)
Well, Scar-Red Nova Dragon is certainly easier to Summon. Two Tuner Monsters aren't that difficult to have on the board at the same time, along with Red Dragon Archfiend. You could simply use Telekinetic Power Well to bring back three copies of Krebons, and have a Level 6 Monster on the field. Level 6 + 2 = Red Dragon Archfiend, then 2 + 2 + 8 = Scar-Red Nova Dragon.
In the case of Shooting Star (At the time of this post), you need to use a 1 + 1 combination to Synchro Summon Formula Synchron, along with a combination for an 8 star Synchro Summon of Stardust Dragon. Only then can you Synchro Summon Shooting Star Dragon. This seems much more difficult to achieve.
As for their effects... Scar-Red Nova is a huge attacker, at least 4500, most likely more. This might allow for an OTK, but I doubt it. As for his evasion, he can't be destroyed through card effects. Well that's all fine and dandy, but what if I have a Dimensional Prison? He's gone, along with the majority of your plan. Lastly, he has an attack negation effect once per turn, and he comes back at the End Phase. He obviously won't be taken down by battle much, but as for protecting other monsters...? I'm going to assume that you put all of your resources into just Summoning him, so I doubt you'll have other battle plans.
Shooting Star Dargon's effects seem much more versatile. He has a way to pull off multiple attacks each turn, but at a gamble. Although, since most of your deck will be geared towards Summoning this guy, I think you'll have a safe number of Tuners. I'm going to guess an average of two attacks per turn, which certainly isn't bad when carrying a 3300 body. Now, his negation effect seems much handier than Scar-Red's protection from card effects. Oncer per turn, you say "No thank you." to a Mirror Force, Bottomless Trap Hole, or Lightning Vortex. This looks good. (Although he's still vulnerable to that damn Dimensional Prison...) Lastly, he can also negate attacks and save himself. This to me seems much more effective on Shooting Star than Scar-Red. At 3300, he's much more killable, and if you're using Level 1 monsters in your deck for the Synchro Summon, you might have one or two left over that you need to protect.
Overall..... I think that Shooting Star Dragon is more versatile, and it will win you a game more often than Scar-Red.

Deciding reasons:

  • Starlight Road can let you get out Stardust easily, even by negating your own card.
  • Formula Synchron provides a draw when Synchro Summoned, and it can even be used to Synchro Summon during your opponent's Main Phase. Incredibly useful.

Both are very nice cards when built around though. I plan on doing both.--Akiza Izayoi 23:49, June 26, 2010 (UTC)

Shooting Star Dragon looks promising with his awesome effects though Scar-Red Nova Dragon looks powerful. It's hard deciding which is better. Fallensilence (talkcontribs) 01:14, June 27, 2010 (UTC)

Both are hard to pull off and both of them has the same weakness: direct removal. If you want brute force then I say "Scar-Red Nova Dragon" but if you're too peachy then go with "Shooting Star Dragon". In my personal opinion, effect-wise "Shooting Star Dragon" is better because it is nearly identical to what "Scar-Red Nova" can do and even more (albeit only once). If you want this two beastly monster fighting in the field then make them attack each other until your eyes became white. --SilentHero26 (talkcontribs) 08:40, June 27, 2010 (UTC)

Wait so I just read the...third post down and checked. I had NO clue that shooting star dragon needed a synchro tuner...wouldn't that make Shooting Star an access synchro monster? If so I still think he's better. Aznskills90214 (talkcontribs) 17:49, June 27, 2010 (UTC)

It's pretty difficult pulling off an Accel Synchro when its already difficult synchro summoning Formula Synchron. Fallensilence (talkcontribs) 21:05, June 27, 2010 (UTC)

In reality, there's no such thing as Accel Synchro. It's just using a Synchro Monster as a Tuner, which has been done before Formula Synchron was released. (Lightwave Tuning + Armory Arm) --Akiza Izayoi (talkcontribs) 22:05, June 27, 2010 (UTC)

It's already cool calling it Accel Synchro because it attracts people to the new cards. Fallensilence (talkcontribs) 12:57, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

And back to the topic, I've tested using both Shooting Star Dragon, and Scar-Red Nova Dragon in a deck. After numerous duels, I've learned that I'd rather have Shooting star Dragon than Scar-Red Nova Dragon. Star Dragon's chance at consecutive attacks has won me a few games, and the protection effect certainly comes in handy.--Akiza Izayoi (talkcontribs) 17:13, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

@ Akiza, Question, how have you been synchro summoning Shooting Star? just the formula synchron way? Do you wait til your opponents turn to summon Shooting Star? Or your turn? Aznskills90214 (talkcontribs) 17:55, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I use Formula Synchron and Stardust Dragon for the Synchro Summon. As for waiting for my opponent's turn, I've never felt the need. I always Synchro Summon it during my own turn, for the purpose of those extra attacks, and negation effect.--Akiza Izayoi (talkcontribs) 18:01, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

I think Red Nova Dragon because its much easier to bring out in a more universal Synchro Deck and its effects fit nicely with its main purpose: being a gigantic beatstick. Yes, Shooting Star Dragon can protect other cards from destruction, albiet its once per turn. However, a boss monster should only have to protect itself for the most part and Red Nova seems to do that just fine. --Sky Scourge God (talkcontribs) 06:32, November 27, 2010 (UTC)

They are both very powerful. I added a Nova Dragon to my /Assault Modes and SD/AM + Nova Dragon is pretty much unbeatable I like him more148.100.212.196 (talk) 21:39, November 28, 2010 (UTC)
