Forum:Yu-gi-oh's popularity (good news)

From Yugipedia
Jump to: navigation, search

I've been messing around with Google Trends and I've realized how popular yugioh actually is compared to other card games. if you compare it to the pokemon or Magic the gathering tcgs, you'll see that it's actually searched more often on google. That's kninda surprising to me because recently, stores in my area have begun discontinuing yugioh merchandise but not magic or pokemon tcg.

I encourage you to check it out yourself and to leave your own oppinion

  • It's nice, but it's not that surprising. Yu-Gi-Oh! was huge a few years back and some fans that it gained from that period are still around, and most people at least know what Yu-Gi-Oh! is, which is kinda rare for other niche card games, like Magic. As for Pokemon, although the TCG was big at one point, the novelty is in the video game franchise. It's hard for a card game to trump that. Yu-Gi-Oh! is starting to seem to fall into niche novelty again, though, albeit slowly. The end of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, which was the main advertising point for the card game, started it, and then the awkwardness of GX/5D's destroyed it's ability to be as mainstream... A shame.--YamiWheeler 23:01, February 27, 2010 (UTC)

Yu-Gi-Oh! Isn't dying anytime soon. It's lasted all this time, and as long as people keep buying the cards then the game will keep going. As for the "awkardness" of Gx/5ds that is all a matter of opinion. Me and my friends all love the the animes, and all of the things that they have added to the game, such as archetypes and Synchro summons.

  • There's "opinion" and then there's the point: it just isn't as mainstream anymore. Which it isn't. It's definately had falling popularity since Duel Monsters ended. This was even shown by the 4th season of GX not even being dubbed. Back in Duel Monsters, if Dawn of the Duel hadn't been dubbed, just how much fuss would have been caused, do you think? I'd say a hell of a lot more. Ultimately, any sort of franchise can't be kept alive just by "people buying the cards". It has to be profitable to keep going. A lot of franchises die, not necessarily because no one at all buys them, but because they just aren't profitable enough. That being said, Yu-Gi-Oh! is still one of the bigger card games around for now.--YamiWheeler 23:30, February 27, 2010 (UTC)

eh i kinda resent the show

yugioh is an amazing game just the diversity of it and the fact that a ton of people play it the way i got into yugioh was that when i was a kid i saw the show and got pulled in but now that im older i kinda resent the fact that it has the show ona kids channel cuz i dono bout everyone else im tired of the teasing and the name callin they call it a childs game but theres no way an 11 year old can play it right cuz of the fact that its too advanced but if they didnt have a show then yugioh wouldnt be so popular

  • Yeah, I see where you're coming from, but ultimatly, it is a card game designed for children. That's why a lot of the themes have to be dumbed down for the TCG. You just have to ignore the criticism. Anyone who has played competitively and then even heard some kids talk about the card game can tell that a kid just has no comprehension of how to play the game strategically, but the game wasn't made to just be played competitively, either. I'm thankful for the show because it pushes Yu-Gi-Oh! further and gives it extra time to stay alive. Without the show, who knows, it could have died by now.--YamiWheeler 23:48, February 27, 2010 (UTC)

The TCG and the dubbed Anime are dumbed down for Children, yes. It's very unfortunate though, because the OCG and the original Anime are for teenagers, not children. If you're being tease about liking Yugioh, take comfort, they may say it's for children, but they're more of a child then you are, and it was definitely NOT made originally for little kids. 70.247.169.204 14:00, March 11, 2010 (UTC)

  • Are you kidding? Of course it's a children's card game. Even the original anime's story was very childish, and then GX (with cards being shot into space to give them magical powers) and 5D's (duels on motorcycles) really broke the bank with the amount of childish themes they added to the show. A show that is made for teenagers/young adults is Gundam. Compare Gundam to Yu-Gi-Oh! and you'll see how ridiculously childish it is in comparison.--YamiWheeler 04:35, March 12, 2010 (UTC)
  • I believe that this is not a CHILDREN'S card game. seriously, try teaching someone 14 or 13 priority and the 7 substeps, they'll have an aneurysm. This game will not die for a conceivably long time. I am sure about that, and Gundam is an anime just like yugioh, and is still made for the same age audience in Japan =) User:Goblinpunch787
  • The card game has parts that are obviously designed for more competitive play, but ultimately, it's a card game for children, marketed AT children to make money FROM children. And just because they're both anime means they have the same demographic? Don't be naive. Let's just broadcast something like Bible Black in the same time slot as Yu-Gi-Oh! and see how that goes - I'm sure it'll be fine, they're both anime afterall. Gundam and Yu-Gi-Oh! have waaaayyy different demographics.--YamiWheeler 13:49, March 12, 2010 (UTC)
