Kaito has light grey eyes, pale skin and blonde hair that is curled up in a point with a dark green spiked front. His attire includes a black trench coat with a high collar over a grey shirt, fingerless black glove on his right hand, and white pants with black boots. He also has a belt with two purple boxes for his cards.
Unlike any other regular [[D-Pad]] version of a [[Duel Disk]], Kaito's disk is a blue and single-bladed disk that curves outside, though he uses a normal D-Pad in ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL - Rank SP1|Destined Meeting]]!!''. He can Duel without a [[Duel Gazer]]; however, his left eye turns red and several marks resembling a Duel Gazer are seen when he Duels. When Kaito Duels, his black outfit switches to white in a process called "[[Photon Transformation|Photon Change]]". When Kaito is possessed by "Number 95", the white sclera of his eyes become black.
===Etymology===
Upon locating [[No. 63: Shamoji Soldier (manga)|another Number]] Kaito arrived on the scene, only to find it had already been claimed by [[Ryoga Kamishiro (manga)|Shark]], who now acted as a Number Hunter himself. When [[Luna (ZEXAL)|Luna]] lamented his situation, which forced him to act as a puppet for Haruto's sake, Kaito was infuriated and tried to use [[Photon Hand]] on them all, but Luna used a charm to protect herself, Shark, Yuma, and Astral, then teleport them away from Kaito.<ref name="ch20">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|20|ref}}</ref>
Due to his disobedience at the Heartland Theme Park, Mr. Heartland hired [[Kyoji Yagumo]] to hunt "Numbers " in his place. <ref name="ch21">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|21|ref}}</ref> Days later, Shark and Luna noticed that he also was watching Yuma's battle against [[Eviluder]]. The appearance of "[[No. 42: Galaxy Tomahawk (manga)|No. 42: Galaxy Tomahawk]] surprised all of the Number Hunters present.<ref name="ch22">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|22|ref}}</ref> Kaito was startled as well by Kyoji's appearance after the Duel, and witnessed his replacement declare the beginning of "Numbers War". Declaring he was sick of it as soon as Kyoji left, Kaito departed.<ref name="ch24">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|24|ref}}</ref>
That night, Kaito picked up Haruto and left Heartland Tower, blowing it up in the process. He told Haruto that Kaito was taking him somewhere safe so he wouldn't be caught up in the chaos of the war, but Heartland Tower was also not a safe place for them anymore. Unfortunately, they were ensnared by spider webs strung between buildings, and Haruto was taken by Kyoji, the one who set the trap. While Kyoji declared he knew Kaito would do such a thing, Kaito began a Duel against [[Hishakaku]], Kyoji's second assassin. The effects of "[[Line World]]" and "[[No. 72: Line Monster Chariot Hisha (manga)|No. 72: Line Monster Chariot Hisha]]" kept Kaito in a tight spot, leaving "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" in Hishakaku's Graveyard.<ref name="ch25">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! After that, Kaito was kept resting, while Orbital 7 took care of him. However, Kyoji defeats Orbital 7 and takes the unconscious Kaito to the Heartland Tower, where he finds Dr. Faker's corpse. He panics, yelling that if Dr. Faker won't heal Haruto, who else would. Kyoji then appears and they being a Duel, in which Kyoji would heal Haruto in case Kaito won, and Kaito would ally himself with Kyoji in case Kyoji won. Kaito summons out "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" and deals heavy damage to Kyoji, until the latter reveals himself to be using Haruto in the Duel, and that if Kaito defeats him, he knows what would happen to Haruto.<ref name="ch32">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|35|ref}}</ref><ref name="ch36">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|36|ref}}</ref> Kaito surrenders, and is forced to Duel Yuma under Kyoji's terms. While Dueling Yuma, he summons out his new ace monster, "[[Galaxy Eyes Full Armor Photon Dragon (manga)|Galaxy Eyes Full Armor Photon Dragon]]", which allowed him to corner Yuma,<ref name="ch37">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|37|ref}}</ref><ref name="ch38">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|38|ref}}</ref><ref name="ch40">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|40|ref}}</ref> until Yuma turns the table, Summoning "Utopia One". But then, Kaito uses "[[Shade of the King]]", Tributing his "Galaxy-Eyes" to summon a [[Blank card|blank]] "Number" monster Kyoji gave him.<ref name="ch41">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|41|ref}}</ref>
Kaito molds the blank card into "[[No. 95: Galaxy Eyes Dark Matter Dragon (manga)|No. 95: Galaxy-Eyes Dark Matter Dragon]]". Using its various effects, Kaito removes 15 cards from Yuma's deck and destroys Yuma's monster. Kaito asks Yuma why he can't just leave him alone. Yuma responds that he still considers Kaito a friend despite all that happened and convinces him to stop the duel to save Haruto. Kaito agrees and is about to surrender but suddenly he is taken over by a dark presence. Now under the control of "Number 95 " Kaito is forced to continue the duel. However by connecting with him, Yuma was able to awaken a new power and summons "Number S39: Utopia the Lightning". Using his new power Yuma defeats Kaito and frees him from the control of Kyoji's number"Number".<ref name="ch42">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|42|ref}}</ref>
