The Shadow Realm is similar to (and probably based on) the religious concept of '''Hell'''.
In Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's the dark signers want to send the people they duel to the nether-realm. It could be presumed that the Shadow Realm and the nether-realm are the same place, but they were given different name due to cultural differences(Egypt vs Inca).
