He later found [[Yuma Tsukumo (manga)|Yuma]]. Orbital 7 freezes the time right when Yuma would be ran over by a car, saving him, and seeing he has "Number" cards as well, forced him into a Duel. Kaito totally overpowered Yuma during the Duel, Summoning two "Numbers" during his fist [[turn]], and mostly rendering his efforts useless with his [[signature card]], "[[Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon (manga)|Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon]]",<ref name="ch08"> </ref> but at the instant when he would win, Orbital 7 told Kaito that his brother Haruto is badly injured, making Kaito cancel the Duel and flee.<ref name="ch09">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! Some time later, he Dueled Shark for his "Numbers". Shark used "[[Anchor Whale]]" to nullify "Galaxy-Eyes".<ref name="ch29">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|29|ref}}</ref> Shark continued to gain an edge through destroying "Galaxy-Eyes" and a combo of his "[[No. 47: Nightmare Shark (manga)|No. 47: Nightmare Shark]]" and "[[Bahamut Shark (manga)|Bahamut Shark]]", but Kaito used "[[Hyper Galaxy]]" to bring back his ace and reduce Shark's Life Points to 1600. Unfortunately, as Shark held "[[No. 31: Abel's Doom (manga)|No. 31: Abel's Doom]]", and Kaito still had "Cain's Doom", the trap Shadow had set was complete, causing the two "Numbers" to Summon themselves, reduce both their life points to 1000, and wipe out both players' fields, setting the stage for a double knockout.<ref name="ch30">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|30|ref}}</ref> Yuma began a Duel with Shadow to save them, paying 2002 of his Life Points to offer half the amount to each of them as "Cain's Doom" and "Abel's Doom" continued to attack each other.<ref name="ch31">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|31|ref}}</ref> During the Duel, Yuma continuously tried to sacrifice his own Life for Kaito and Shark's sake, with both being against it. Their wishes to defeat Shadow created a strong bond between them, causing Astral to shine brightly and give birth to "[[No. S39: Utopia One (manga)|No. S39: Utopia One]]", leading Yuma to victory and rescuing Kaito and Shark from a narrow defeat.<ref name="ch32">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|32|ref}}</ref>.
After that, Kaito was kept resting, while Orbital 7 took care of him. However, Kyoji defeats Orbital 7 and takes the unconscious Kaito to the Heartland Tower, where he finds Dr. Faker's corpse. He panics, yelling that if Dr. Faker won't heal Haruto, who else would. Kyoji then appears and they being a Duel, in which Kyoji would heal Haruto in case Kaito won, and Kaito would ally himself with Kyoji in case Kyoji won. Kaito summons out "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" and deals heavy damage to Kyoji, until the latter reveals himself to be using Haruto in the Duel, and that if Kaito defeats him, he knows what would happen to Haruto.<ref name="ch32ch35">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|35|ref}}</ref><ref name="ch36">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|36|ref}}</ref> Kaito surrenders, and is forced to Duel Yuma under Kyoji's terms. While Dueling Yuma, he summons out his new ace monster, "[[Galaxy Eyes Full Armor Photon Dragon (manga)|Galaxy Eyes Full Armor Photon Dragon]]", which allowed him to corner Yuma,<ref name="ch37">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|37|ref}}</ref><ref name="ch38">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|38|ref}}</ref><ref name="ch40">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|40|ref}}</ref> until Yuma turns the table, Summoning "Utopia One". But then, Kaito uses "[[Shade of the King]]", Tributing his "Galaxy-Eyes" to summon a [[Blank card|blank]] "Number" monster Kyoji gave him.<ref name="ch41">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|41|ref}}</ref>
Kaito molds the blank card into "[[No. 95: Galaxy Eyes Dark Matter Dragon (manga)|No. 95: Galaxy-Eyes Dark Matter Dragon]]". Using its various effects, Kaito removes 15 cards from Yuma's deck and destroys Yuma's monster. Kaito asks Yuma why he can't just leave him alone. Yuma responds that he still considers Kaito a friend despite all that happened and convinces him to stop the duel to save Haruto. Kaito agrees and is about to surrender but suddenly he is taken over by a dark presence. Now under the control of "Number 95" Kaito is forced to continue the duel. However by connecting with him, Yuma was able to awaken a new power and summons "Number S39: Utopia the Lightning". Using his new power Yuma defeats Kaito and frees him from the control of Kyoji's "Number".<ref name="ch42">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL|42|ref}}</ref>
