A Spell Counter (魔力カウンター Maryoku Kauntā) is a specific type of counter that can be placed on certain cards whose effect allows them to gain Spell Counters. Such cards usually have an effect that allows them to gain Spell Counters whenever used by a Spell Card is activated, such as "Skilled Dark Magician" (although there are exceptions, such as "Alchemist variety of Black Spells" and "Breaker the Magical Warrior"). Other cards, such as "Pitch-Black Power Stone", have effects that allow them to place Spell Counters on other cards.
There is a "Spell Counter" card that officially represents Spell Counters. == Effect ==Spell Counters themselves do not have an effect, but many cards have effects that require Spell Counters . Spell Counters can only be placed on cards that have an effect that allows Spell Counters to be placed on them. If that card's effect is negated, Spell Counters cannot be placed on it and any Spell Counters already on it are usually centered around removed.<ref>{{cite book|author=Konami|title=Yu-Gi-Oh! Many cards have effects that allow them to remove Spell Counters (usually from themselves) to activate their effects. However, cards use Spell Counters in a wide variety of ways, not just for removing as a cost. Some cards (such as "Lord of the MagicianPitch-Black Power Stone contain a number of ") have effects that allow them to place Spell Counters on other cards, with some cards being able to place Spell Counter related Counters on other cardsdespite not being able to have them placed on themselves (such as "Magical Plant Mandragola").
