− | Look at the graphs here, Magic (Type). I know people around here don't speak Japanese and like to make things up about a language they don't speak, but just look at them. 幻想魔 is translated as "Illusionists," not "Illusion Magic," so as far as I can tell, somebody just pulled "Illusion Magic" out of their ignorant rear end and is definitely not settled. 悪魔 ("Demon") is there, too, is it supposed to be "literally" "evil magic", whatever "literally" even means any more? At best, translating 魔 as "Magic" by analogy with 黒魔族 and 白魔族 is lore-based, not "literal" in any way. And keep in mind that 魔 only means "magic" in compounds like 黒魔術 and 白魔術, which are known in real life to be less "demon" and more "magic". Words have different meanings in different contexts, and not everything can be translated into English at all, it's mind-blowing, I know! 魔族 at best a serendipitous grouping of two unrelated concepts that happen to share the morpheme 魔 in their etymological constructions.2001:EE0:50E5:8590:D41E:30EC:3E1E:7BE6 (talk) 17:20, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

− | 魔 primarily refers to a class of "ogres" or "demons" in Indian mythology (Hinduism/Buddhism). It's constructed from the phonetic 麻 and the semantic 鬼 ("demon", "ogre", "ghost"). From that, you can derive 魔術 as "demonic art", which has been used to translate the western concept of "magic." While in western contexts, "demon" (a Christian concept) and "magic" (a pagan concept) are relatively separate, 魔 has a much broader connotation in Eastern religions. It can refer to literally anything supernatural, from "ghost", "yokai", "demon", "devil", "ogre", "magic", etc. Translations are often inadequate, and have to rely on this fuzzy meaning range. 魔女 is a "witch", not a "demonic girl". 魔術 ("demonic art") and 魔法 ("demonic law/dharma") have to be understood as "supernatural" crafts, not "demonic" ones with their Christian baggage. 邪魔 can be "wicked demon", or any pagan doctrines that do not conform to the mainstream (Chinese folk religion, Shinto, Buddhism, etc.)2001:EE0:50E5:8590:D41E:30EC:3E1E:7BE6 (talk) 17:45, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

| |
− | :Only if you're the kind of person who translates proper names, which makes your bringing up of Untranslatability a bit hypocritical.
| |
− | :«Words have different meanings in different contexts»
| |
− | :This very argument can be used against your take, really. "Illusion Magic" was chosen based on the context of the manga.
| |
− | :«魔女 is a "witch", not a "demonic girl". 魔術 ("demonic art") and 魔法 ("demonic law/dharma") have to be understood as "supernatural" crafts, not "demonic" ones with their Christian baggage.»
| |
− | :...do you not realize this outright disproves your claim that has to be "Illusory Demon"?
| |
− | :Look, it doesn't matter how right you are or even how fluent in Japanese you are, if your reaction to any linguistic disagreement is immediate assumption of the other party being 100% illiterate in the language in question, eventually one of the admins is going to start banning your IPs for being intractable regardless (especially if you're doing it to their face). Your obnoxious habit of doing upwards of 3 edits in a row on almost every page you touch (a behavior we vehemently discourage), and not using the proper spacing on templates, don't help your case. - XBrain130™「Xブレーン130」 17:55, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
