Summary.
 +
*Yami Duels Rafael, 1 of the 3 Swordsmen of Doma. He seeks to eliminate the Pharaoh. He traps him in a sole patch of rock by cutting off the rope bridge and ensuring no-one can come in or out of the Duel Field.
 +
* Rafael demonstrates a calm composure and being a good speaker: upon being accused of being 'evil' by Yami, he calmly questions what he understands for 'justice' instead. He claims that History itself decides if the road Doma walks upon is evil or not.
 +
*Rafael reveals a Deck of Guardian Monsters, which were his sole companions when he was shipwrecked on an island for 3 years as a child, losing his parents, brother, and sister. He signals how some of his Cards are slightly blurry, revealing they got wet time before. He's replaced the backside so as not to be recognizable this way, but it doesn't change the fact that they've supported him.
 +
**He always kept his Cards safe, and his current strategy reflects that bond -- he will pay any cost to keep his Monsters out of the Graveyard. He doesn't want to lose anyone else. One day he was shown a vision of a mysterious island and a voice --- Dartz's --- told him that, when he would understand everything, he would be allowed to come to his side.
 +
**When he was finally rescued from the island, he found the normal world depressing. That was when he was approached by Dartz and joined Doma, hoping to find the answer to 'Fate' itself.
 +
**One of the Monsters, Guardian Eatos, was his birthday present just before the wreck.
 +
*** On a side note, Weevil and Rex arrive in the midst of the Duel and look on.
 +
*** Also, Yugi's friends realize that he's gone off alone: Joey, Tristan and Duke Devlin will go look for him. Téa and Rebecca stay in the trailer to take care of Professor Hawkins.

Rafael traps Yami Yugi on the butte by cutting off the rope bridge that connects it to the surrounding area, thus ensuring no-one can leave or interfere with their Duel. Denying Yami Yugi's accusations of being "evil", Rafael questions what he understands for "justice" instead. He claims that history itself decides if the road Doma walks upon is evil or not.

*Sets a Card.

Rafael reveals a Deck of "Guardian" monsters, which were his sole companions when he was shipwrecked on an island for three years as a child, losing his parents, brother, and sister. He signals how some of his Cards are slightly blurry, revealing they got wet time before. He's replaced the backside so as not to be recognizable this way, but it doesn't change the fact that they've supported him. He always kept his cards safe, and his current strategy reflects that bond; he will pay any cost to keep his monsters out of the Graveyard, as he doesn't want to lose anyone else.

Yami Yugi's Turn
 +
*Draws "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts".
 +
*Activates Spell Card "Polymerization", sending "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts" and "Berfomet" from his Hand to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon "Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast" from his Fusion Deck in Attack Position (2100 ATK / 1800 DEF).
 +
*Attacks Rafael's Face-Down Monster with "Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast": it's revealed to be "Backup Gardna" (500 ATK / 2200 DEF) who is then flipped into face-up Defense Position. Since the latter monster's DEF is higher than "Chimera's" ATK, the attack fails (Yami: 4000 → 3900 Life Points).

One day he was shown a vision of a mysterious island and a voice, Dartz's, told him that when he would understand everything, he would be allowed to come to his side. When he was finally rescued from the island, he found the normal world depressing. That was when he was approached by Dartz and joined Doma, hoping to find the answer to "fate" itself.
+
Rafael's Turn
 +
*Thanks to the Effect of his "Guardian Treasure", Draws one extra Card.
 +
*Activates Equip Spell Card "Gravity Axe - Grarl", equipping it to "Backup Gardna" and increasing the ATK of "Backup Gardna" by 500 ("Backup Gardna": 500 → 1000 ATK / 2200 DEF).
 +
*Since "Gravity Axe - Grarl" is on the Field and since "Guardian Grarl" is the only Card left in his Hand, Rafael Activates its Effect and Special Summons "Grarl" (2500 ATK / 1000 DEF) to the Field from his Hand in Attack Position.
 +
*Activates "Backup Gardna's" Effect, unequipping its "Gravity Axe - Grarl" and Equipping it to "Guardian Grarl" instead ("Backup Gardna": 1000 → 500 ATK / 2200 DEF) ("Guardian Grarl": 2500 → 3000 ATK / 1000 DEF).
 +
*Uses "Guardian Grarl" to attack & destroy Yami's "Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast" (Yami: 3900 → 3000 Life Points).
 +
*Upon its destruction, Yami activates "Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast's" effect, choosing to Special Summon "Berfomet" back to the field (1400 ATK / 1800 DEF) in Attack Position.

One of the Monsters, "Guardian Eatos", was his birthday present just before the wreck.
+
Yami Yugi's Turn
 +
*Draws and Activates Spell Card "Five Star Twilight": since "Berfomet" is a Level 5 monster, Yami can Tribute it to Special Summon the 5 Kuriboh Brothers from his Deck: "Kuriboh", "Kuriba", "Kuribi", "Kuribe" and "Kuribu" in Attack Position (300 ATK / 200 DEF).
 +
*Removes "Kuriboh", "Kuriba", "Kuribi", "Kuribe" and "Kuribu" from play to Special Summon "Kuribabylon" (? ATK / 200 DEF) from his Deck in Attack Position.
 +
*"Kuribabylon's" ATK is the sum of the ATK of all 5 Kuriboh Brothers, i.e. 300 × 5 = 1500 ("Kuribabylon": ? → 1500 ATK / 200 DEF).
 +
*Activates Spell Card "Pump Up", doubling "Kuribabylon's" ATK for 1 turn ("Kuribabylon": 1500 → 3000 ATK / 200 DEF).
 +
*Uses "Kuribabylon" to Attack Rafael's "Guardian Grarl".
 +
*Rafael Activates Spell Card "Rescuer from the Grave" directly from his Graveyard: he removes from play 5 Cards from his Graveyard to Negate the Attack and end the Battle Phase.
 +
*Activates "Kuribabylon's" Effect, Removing it from the play to Special Summon the 5 Kuriboh Brothers: "Kuriboh", "Kuriba", "Kuribi", "Kuribe" and "Kuribu" from the Removed from Play Zone to the field in Attack Position (300 ATK / 200 DEF).

On a side note, Weevil and Rex arrive in the midst of the Duel and look on.
+
Rafael's Turn
+
*Thanks to the Effect of his "Guardian Treasure", Draws one extra Card.
Also, Yugi's friends realize that he's gone off alone: Joey, Tristan and Duke Devlin will go look for him. Téa and Rebecca stay in the trailer to take care of Professor Hawkins.
+
*Sets two Cards("Exchange" and "Self Tribute".

+
*Activates his Set Continuous Spell Card "Purity of the Cemetery": during each of Yami's Standby Phases, Yami will receive 100 Damage for each Monster present in his Graveyard. If there is a Monster in Rafael's Graveyard, "Purity of the Cemetery" will be Destroyed.
Featured Duel: Rafael vs. Yami Yugi - Part 1
+
*Uses "Grarl" to attack "Kuriboh".

<u>Turn 1: Rafael</u><br />

Rafael activates the Continuous Magic Card "Guardian Treasure", discarding five cards and drawing two cards. While "Guardian Treasure" is face-up, Rafael may draw one extra card from his Deck during each of his Draw Phases. Rafael Sets a monster and Sets a card.

<u>Turn 2: Yami Yugi</u><br />

Yami Yugi draws "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts". Yami Yugi activates the Magic Card "Polymerization", sending Fusion Material Monsters from his hand or field to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon a Fusion Monster from his Fusion Deck. He fuses "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts" and "Berfomet" in his hand in order to Fusion Summon "Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast" (2100/1800) in Attack Position. "Chimera" attacks Rafael's face-down monster, "Backup Gardna" (500/2200). The attack fails (Yami Yugi 4000 → 3900).

<u>Turn 3: Rafael</u><br />

Due to the effect of his "Guardian Treasure", Rafael draws two cards during his Draw Phase. Rafael activates the Equip Magic Card "Gravity Axe - Grarl", equipping it to "Backup Gardna" and increasing the ATK of "Backup Gardna" by 500 ("Backup Gardna": 500 → 1000/2200). As "Gravity Axe - Grarl" is on the field and "Guardian Grarl" is the only card in Rafael's hand, he Special Summons "Guardian Grarl" (2500/1000) from his hand in Attack Position via its own effect. Rafael activates the effect of "Backup Gardna", selecting a face-up Equip Card on the field and equipping it to another appropriate target. He selects the "Gravity Axe - Grarl" equipped to "Backup Gardna" and equips it to "Guardian Grarl" ("Backup Gardna": 1000 → 500/2200; "Guardian Grarl": 2500 → 3000/1000). "Guardian Grarl" attacks and destroys "Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast" (Yami Yugi 3900 → 3000). As "Chimera" was destroyed, Yami Yugi activates its effect, Special Summoning either "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts" or "Berfomet" from his Graveyard. He Special Summons "Berfomet" from his Graveyard (1400/1800) in Attack Position.

<u>Turn 4: Yami Yugi</u><br />

Yami Yugi draws "Five Star Twilight". Yami Yugi activates the Magic Card "Five Star Twilight", Tributing a Level 5 monster to Special Summon one "Kuriboh", "Kuribah", "Kuribee", "Kuribeh" and "Kuriboo" from his hand or Deck. He Tributes "Berfomet" and Special Summons "Kuriboh", "Kuribah", "Kuribee", "Kuribeh" and "Kuriboo" all from his Deck in Attack Position (300/200 for all). Yami Yugi activates the effect of "Kuribah", removing "Kuriboh", "Kuribah", "Kuribee", "Kuribeh" and "Kuriboo" from play to Special Summon "Kuribabylon" (?/200) from his hand, Deck or Graveyard. He Special Summons "Kuribabylon" from his Deck in Attack Position. As "Kuribabylon" was Special Summoned by the effect of "Kuribah", its ATK is equal to the sum of the total ATK the monsters removed from play to Special Summon it ("Kuribabylon": ? → 1500/200). Yami Yugi activates the Magic Card "Pump Up", doubling the ATK of a monster he controls until the end of the turn. He chooses ("Kuribabylon": 1500 → 3000/200). "Kuribabylon" attacks "Guardian Grarl", but as Rafael's opponent's monster declared an attack while "Rescuer from the Grave" was in his Graveyard, Rafael activates its effect, removing five cards in his Graveyard from play to negate the attack and end the Battle Phase. Yami Yugi activates the effect of "Kuribabylon", removing it from play to Special Summon one "Kuriboh", "Kuribah", "Kuribee", "Kuribeh" and "Kuriboo" that were removed from play. He Special Summons "Kuriboh", "Kuribah", "Kuribee", "Kuribeh" and "Kuriboo" in Attack Position (300/200 for all).

<u>Turn 5: Rafael</u><br />

Due to the effect of his "Guardian Treasure", Rafael draws two cards during his Draw Phase. Rafael Sets "Exchange" and "Self Tribute". As he has no monsters in his Graveyard, Rafael activates his face-down Continuous Magic Card "Purity of the Cemetery". During each of Yami Yugi's Standby Phases, Yami Yugi will take 100 damage for each monster in his Graveyard. If there is a monster in Rafael's Graveyard, "Purity of the Cemetery" will be destroyed. "Guardian Grarl" attacks "Kuriboh".

Differences between adaptions
* In the Japanese version, Rafael's parents were either presumed to be dead or confirmed to be dead as he visited their graves. His remaining relatives took his parents' inheritance and threw him out. In the dub, that scene of him visiting their graves were cut and he believed his family had forsaken him- since they were said to have been alive since they acquired lifeboats and never bothered to look for him even after he gained recognition as being a "miracle boy".

* When Rebecca was doing research in the original, apart from mentioning Rafael's shipwreck, she also mentioned she wasn't the first national Duel Monsters champion of the United States, but Rafael was. In the dub, she only mentioned the shipwreck.
