Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship Tournament 2004, known in Japan as Yu-Gi-Oh! Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship Tournament 2004, known in Japan as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 9: Expert 3, is a video game based on the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.

In the game, the player can assemble three Decks and can play Duel Monsters against a variety of computer opponents.
+
The game has been released on the Game Boy Advance. In the game, the player can assemble three decks and can play Duel Monsters against a variety of computer opponents. The game features the first 1,108 cards released in Japan. There are 29 opponents in the game. Each opponent has different skills and decks revolve around a certain theme (Yugi Muto = Basic, Rare Hunter = Exodia, Yami Yugi  = Ultimate, etc.).

The game features 1,138 cards (201 Spells, 109 Traps, 55 Fusion Monsters, 16 Ritual Monsters, 224 Effect Monsters and 533 Normal Monsters). "Dark Magician" and "Polymerization" can be collected in two different artworks, counting as different cards.
+
The stronger opposing decks (Level Four and above) use three copies of the Forbidden/Limited/Semi-Limited cards.
 +
Also, the opponent can switch Flip Effect Monsters into Defense Position the turn they are Flip Summoned if no other cards in play prevent it.

 +
Level 1
 +
*Tristan
 +
Deck-The only threat in this deck is Goblin Attack Force, which can be easily disposed of after it attacks. All other monsters have under 1000 ATK/DEF, except for Hyozanryu, which would be incredibly hard to summon due to lack of tributes.

Changes since Stairway to the Destined Duel
+
*Tea
The following changes were made since Yu-Gi-Oh! Worldwide Edition: Stairway to the Destined Duel:
+
Deck-This deck is also easy to beat due to lack of stall cards, but it would take a long time due to the effective Life Points healing cards. It is possible for Tea to summon St. Joan with her high 2000 DEF Forgiving Maiden and decent 1700 ATK Marie the Fallen One. Other than that, Fire Princess can burn off a massive amount of your Life Points if not disposed of quickly.

General
+
*Yugi
* Players can have three Decks.
+
Deck-Yugi has a number of cards that control the Monster Card Zones. He has weak monsters, but if you have no monsters, Gemini Elf, Summoned Skull, or Dark Magician will be summoned.
* Passwords have been removed.

* No games are played as Matches. As such, the Side Deck has been removed.

Campaign
+
*Trusdale
* The story element has been removed.
+
Deck-This deck is the basically the same as Yugi's except Exodia, Backup Soldier, and Blue-Eyes White Dragon replace Yugi's high ATK monsters.
* The game returns to the format of choosing opponents from a list, rather than a map.

* Characters do not speak.

* The option to choose a random opponent is added.

* Opponents have on-screen numbering.

* A Deck theme is displayed for each opponent.

* Opponents are given scores from 1 to 5 for "Attack", "Defense", "Strategy", "Intellect" and "Luck"

Cards
+
*Bakura
* On-screen numbering is re-introduced.
+
Deck-The only thing dangerous in this deck are the three Maha Vailos and the rarely used Equip Cards.
* Monster Tokens and the cards that Summon them have been removed.

Deck edit

* Cards can be filtered by Level group (1–4, 5–6, 7+).

* Cards can be ordered by category (frame color).

+
*Rex Raptor Unlocked by-
 +
Deck-This deck is like the ones in Level 1. The strongest monsters are Crawling Dragon #2 and Two-Headed King Rex. No tribute monster has over 2000 ATK, and the Fusion has 2200 ATK.

Campaign
+
*Weevil Underwood Unlocked by-
Opponents
+
Deck-Weevil has a rather scary deck to duel against, using Mirror Force, Torrential Tribute, and Man-Eater Bug. Sangan can bring out Witch of the Black Forest, which in turn gets Empress Mantis or Jirai Gumo (which is usually already summoned). If you can get past the Traps and ATK power, Raigeki will stop you, though it'll be used once.

There are 28 opponents in the game. Each opponent has different skills and Decks revolving around a certain theme (Yugi Muto = Basic, Rare Hunter = Exodia, Yami Yugi = Ultimate, etc.).

There is no conversation when beginning a Duel with the game beginning immediately after selecting the opponent.
+
*Mako Tsunami Unlocked by-
 +
Deck-Mako has Umi and A Legendary Ocean, so he can summon The Legendary Fisherman easily and devastate with Amphibian Beast. With Torrential Tribute and Tornado Wall, this deck is very hard to inflict damage on.

The speed of play is slow but can be sped up by holding L while Dueling or just hold L while choosing an opponent.

The weaker opposing Decks are full of junk monsters that aren't worth battling like "Winged Cleaver".
+
Level 3
The stronger opposing Decks (Level Four and above) put up a higher challenge since they ignore card limitations.
+
*Maximillion Pegasus Unlocked by-
 +
Deck-Pegasus uses Vorse Raider and Nimble Momonga to fend off attacks, along with the many shielding Traps in order to summon his heavy damaging Toon Monsters. This deck pays a lot of Life Points but also has lots of healing, like Tea. Mirror Wall is often played when it isn't needed to, sometimes resulting in a wasted Trap or a loss if 2000 (sometimes 4000) Life Points. Sometimes, Toon Mermaid will be Special Summoned, and then summon Normal Summoned Skull.

Since many opponents do not use cards against your Spells/Traps, the use of stalling cards like "Gravity Bind" can make winning very simple.
+
*Bandit Keith Unlocked by-
 +
Deck-There are few monsters in this deck, though Blocker has high defense to stall to summon Pendulum Machine, Slot Machine, or Barrel Dragon, along with cards like Overdrive, Oni Tank T-34, and Mechanicalchaser for support. There are also six Traps, three Trap Holes and three Gambles.

*Rare Hunter
The number of total cards shown in the top bar is not the number of different cards collected so far. It really means the total number of all cards you have. The other numbers in the sub categories only refer to the number of cards in the Deck you currently use.
+
Unlocked by-
 +
You randomly duel Strings, Umbra&Lumis, Arkana, or Rare Hunter.

You can sort cards (only ascending) by choosing sorting criteria one after another. The previous sorting criteria are kept as far as possible (i.e. sort by 1) name 2) DEF 3) ATK). There is no useful sorting criteria for Spells and Traps other than "name".
+
*Strings
 +
Unlocked by defeating Marik

For faster scrolling through the card list, push the left/right-button. You will jump to the next 4 cards. For even faster scrolling, hold the B-button and press up/down.
+
*Umbra&Lumis
 +
Unlocked by defeating Marik

You start the game with 120 random cards. The default Deck can be optimized right away with other cards in your trunk in most cases.
+
*Arkana
 +
Unlocked by defeating Marik

There are cards which are Limited or Semi-Limited. These limitations do not apply to opponents.
+
*Rare Hunter
 +
Unlocked by defeating Marik
 +
Deck-Hunter uses a Exodia deck, like Grandpa. However, even without any stall, this deck has many Forbidden cards, three of each. This includes Mirror Force, Torrential Tribute, and Raigeki, and more terrifyingly, Pot of Greed and Graceful Charity. Luckily, he uses three copies of all Exodia pieces, and won't discard extras unless he has no other cards. 3 copies of Sangan and Witch of the Black Forest makes attacks work against you. Even if you find a way around it, Torrential Tribute, Negate Attack, and Mirror Force will guarantee that you won't. The best strategies to use against this Deck is Burn, or the other winning methods, Destiny Board and your own Exodia.

Unlocked by defeating all the one stars duelists 10 times.
Each time the player wins a Duel, they can open a pack containing five cards. Often, one of the five will be a rare card whose name is displayed in a holographic pattern. The rare card is more likely to be one that the player has not yet received as opposed to a duplicate of one of their existing cards.

Glitches
+
Game Glitches
Card text
+
*Cards with Dark Magician, and other magician cards such as Magician of Black Chaos, in their text mistakenly replaces "Magician" with "Spellian". This can be seen on Dark Magician Girl. This is likely as a result of of a last-minute changing of "Magic" to "Spell" using a mass-text replacer on the ROM before release.
* In both card text and card names, "Magician" has been replaced by "Spellian". This affects cards including "Dark Magician", "Magician of Black Chaos", and "Dark Magician Girl". This is likely as a result of a last-minute changing of "Magic" to "Spell" using a mass-text replacer on the ROM before release.
+
*You take all the damage from Burning Land.
 +
After spear dragon has attacked, activate book of moon and spear dragon would be flipped facedown, therefore, spear dragon's effect makes the card into facedown attack position.

Card effects
+
Game Speed
* You are not asked if you want to activate a Trap on an empty game state. This means it is not possible to use a card like "Call Of The Haunted" during your opponent's End Phase.
+
The speed of Gameplay is relatively slow compared to previous Yu-Gi-Oh! games. But gameplay can be sped up to match previous games, by holding L while dueling or just hold L while chosing an opponent.

* You cannot confirm your opponent's Deck by yourself when using cards like "Nobleman of Extermination".
+
Limited Edition Cards
 +
The following cards were included in the North American version of this game:
 +
* WC4-001 Fairy King Truesdale
 +
* WC4-002 Kinetic Soldier
 +
* WC4-003 Slate Warrior

* "Axe of Despair" is not placed on top of your Deck even if you have offered a monster for its effect.
+
The European and Australian versions of this game included the following cards:

+
* WC4-E001 Valkyrion the Magna Warrior
* You take all the damage from "Burning Land".
+
* WC4-E002 Sinister Serpent

+
* WC4-E003 Harpie's Feather Duster
* Terrain bonuses sometimes do not benefit the player but do always benefit the AI.

* Despite the text saying otherwise, "Maiden of The Aqua" does give the same stat bonuses and penalties as "Umi" when it is face-up on the field. Its effect will still deactivate if another Field Spell is activated.

* After "Spear Dragon" has attacked, activate "Book of Moon" and "Spear Dragon" would be flipped face-down, therefore, the effect of "Spear Dragon" places it in face-down Attack Position.

* Your monster is destroyed even if you chain "Book of Moon" to your opponent's "Trap Hole".

* Monsters gained through the effects of "Red-Moon Baby" are glitched.

* Despite the text of "Spellbinding Circle" saying otherwise, if the targeted monster is Tributed, "Spellbinding Circle" is destroyed.

* If "Spirit Reaper" is targeted by an Equip Spell, only the Spell is destroyed.

* The opponent can switch "Man-Eater Bug" into Defense Position the turn it is Flip Summoned if no other cards in play prevent it.

* When you activate "Call Of The Haunted" during your own Battle Phase while your opponent has no monsters, the Summoned monster attacks automatically.

* After "Book of Moon" was chained to Set the target of an opponent's "Ring of Destruction", "Ring of Destruction" is sent to the Graveyard even when "Banisher of the Light" is face-up on your side of the field.

* The effect of "Nimble Momonga" activates even when it was destroyed by the effect of "Sasuke Samurai".

* The opponent can pay LP for "Chain Energy" even if it reduces them to zero.

* The opponent doesn't pay for "Chain Energy" when playing a card that destroys it like "Heavy Storm"

* In the following situation, you receive damage equal to the 600 DEF of an opponent's "Man-Eater Bug": You attack with a monster like "Gemini Elf", the AI activates "Mirror Force", you chain "Ring of Destruction", the AI chains "Seven Tools of the Bandit".

* When "Zombyra the Dark" is removed from the field by the effect of a "Cyber Jar" it just destroyed, a replacement monster gets its ATK reduced by 200 by "Zombyra's" effect (even if it is Summoned face-down).

Smartness of AI
* The AI:

** Shows signs of "knowing" face-down cards, i.e. it never attacks a Set monster if it has higher DEF than its monster's ATK.

** Never attacks a monster with the highest ATK on the field even if it has an equally strong monster and would be able to attack with other monsters afterwards.

** Will Normal Summon "Slate Warrior" in Attack Position and attack on the same turn, even if your monster has an equal ATK.

** On the turn after summoning "Slate Warrior", the AI will switch it to Defense Position even if it's the strongest monster on the field and it would make sense to keep it in Attack Position.

** Only attacks an opponent's monster with equal or higher ATK in Defense Position (like "Spear Dragon") when it has a monster with a piercing effect.

** Activates Spells and Traps like normal even while "Imperial Order" or "Royal Decree" are in play, each card activated being negated as normal.

** Doesn't use its "Mirror Force" as long as it has "Fairy Box" in play.

** Sometimes only returns 1 of the opponent's monsters to their hand using "Penguin Soldier"

** Sometimes uses its "Mystical Space Typhoon" on its own cards.

** Always Tribute Summons, even if the Tributed monster was stronger than the new monster.

** Tribute Summons even when the Tributed monster is the same monster as the new one.

** Tributes face-down Flip effect monsters without Flip Summoning first.

** Activates "Monster Reborn" in Main Phase 2 even if it would have won the Duel when using it before the Battle Phase.

** Does not hesitate to self-destruct, such as by destroying a face-up opponent's "Black Pendant" while having less than 500 LP.

** Never activates "Snatch Steal" despite having it in hand.

** Often gets the correct outcome when it activates the effect of "Time Wizard".

** Uses "Backup Soldier" when its activation requirements are fulfilled even if no monsters can be retrieved from the Graveyard at that time.

** If a card effect would make one of the AI's monsters stronger than your highest-ATK monster but that monster is naturally weaker than the latter, the AI will still play it in Defense Position. However, it will switch the monster to Attack Position at the next opportunity.
