An OCG-only card is a card currently released in the OCG, but not the TCG.
It is common for cards to be released in the OCG before being announced to the TCG, and vice versa. In most cases, the card retains the OCG-only status for a few months; most of them are from core Booster Packs and other products that normally get imported directly to the TCG shortly after their OCG release. However, there is stlll about two hundred long-term OCG-only cards, often sharing some shared nature.
Summary
Legal OCG-only cards can be divided into several categories. Notable cards are includd there. These are:
- Early OCG-only Monsters
- Currently makes up the majority of the OCG-exclusives. All of them originate in Series 1. Most appeared in the international editions of early video games. Imports to the TCG still occur, but currently at a very slow rate. Example include "Cyber Commander", "The Drdek", and "Twin Long Rods #1". There is some evidence the remainder of these monsters will all be released to the TCG. See the List of cards with the longest OCG to TCG import times.
- A spate of such imports were made for Speed Duel sets. However, the rate of such imports have slowed down drastically.
- The quarter-century anniversary sets are based on the OCG, did not reprint the monsters that belong to this category.
- Early non-Effect Monsters, originating from Series 1, often stay OCG-exclusive for decades before receiving a TCG release.
- 153 Normal Monsters still remains OCG-only. Around half of them did not even receive a reprint. The most recent imports are "Golgoil" and "Fiend Kraken", from Speed Duel: Streets of Battle City.
- The last early non-Effect Fusion Monster to be imported to the TCG is "Rose Spectre of Dunn" from the fifth OTS Tournament Pack.
- The last early non-Effect Ritual Monster to be imported to the TCG is "Chakra", along with its corresponding spell, from the Number Hunters booster pack.
- These are the only monsters to ever exist only in an OCG-exclusive layout, outside of video games. Therefore, they only ever exist in the Japanese language.
- A few appeared in Series 2 reprint sets before never receiving a further reprint.
- Occasionally, another reprint of such cards might be released, albeit OCG-exclusive. They can be of another OCG language.
- However, most of these cards made appearances in early video games that received an international release. especially that of the Duel Monsters or True Duel Monsters series.
- These are the only source for the would-be TCG lore for these cards.
- There are cases where the name and lore has been changed upon the first TCG appearance or in subsequent video game appearances. The seven Normal Monsters introduced through Joey's World Mega Pack have their lores changed to a Brooklyn-accent lore. "Wicked Mirror" was renamed to "Archfiend Mirror" because it belonged to the "Archfiend" archetype due to the presence of 「デーモン」 in the Japanese name.
- There is a small amount of cards, such as Mask of Shine & Dark, Bear Trap, and Winged Trumpeter which remain exclusive to these early video games. A larger amount of Normal Monsters appeared only in Duel Monsters 4.
- These cards often debuted in the same source as the cards that would stay OCG-exclusive in this category.
- Recently, one monster exclusive to a single video game was released to the OCG as an Effect Monster, and later imported to the TCG three months later. It has a low ID number of 5051 as predicted.
- Exclusively distributed cards
- A small amount of OCG-exclusive cards are expected to never receive a TCG counterpart, or even appear in an international edition of a video game. Many do not have official international names. Examples include "Shuttleroid", Magi Magi ☆ Magician Gal, "Holactie the Creator of Light", and "True Exodia".
- Many do not have reprints, or may have a hard limit of the number of copies in existance.
- The latter 3 are all designed directly and illustrated by Takahashi himself.
- They may also display unique properties such as completely lacking a Password or having extremely unusual effects.
- Collaborations, Crossovers, and Parodies
- Cards released in collaboration or reference with another Japanese product are not expected to receive a TCG counterpart, or even appear in an international edition of a video game. Examples are the three Calbee potato chips cards, Light Bringer Lucifer from Monster Strike, Nanana from TV Tokyo (being the channel which airs the anime series), and the Power Pros collaboration cards that parody an existing Yu-Gi-Oh! card.
- Any appearance or mentioning of such cards are often removed completely in international versions and dubs.
- This is most likely because of legal reasons.
- However, many cards referencing other Konami games, such as "Gradius", are present in both the OCG and the TCG, and under regular distribution.
- Recently released cards
- The remaining seventy or so cards featured on this list are expected to be OCG-exclusive only for a few months to about two years.
- Exceptions may occur due to the card being made Forbidden before being imported to the TCG, such as Sixth Sense.
Old OCG-only Normal Monsters
This list contains Normal Monsters which were originally printed in Series 1 of the OCG in 1999 and 2000, and therefore are not expected to be imported to the TCG in any given set. In addition to basic information about the card (its English and Japanese names), the original set and the most recent set the card was printed in are also listed.
As of August 2023, 153 such cards remain. 33 received a reprint: three ("Akihiron", "Mabarrel", "Crow Goblin"), only receiving a single Series 1 reprint; 25 received only Series 2 reprints, all in reprint sets; and five received a reprint in a modern layout. "Boo Koo" and "Doriado" have been printed in a non-Japanese language, both having a Korean print.
This leaves 120 cards to only appear in one single Series 1 set.
