Some card effects can Special Summon an Xyz Monster, treating that Special Summon as an Xyz Summon. This type of Special Summon is not an Xyz Summon despite being treated as one, so it does not necessarily follow any mechanics of an Xyz Summon.

Commonly, card effects that Special Summon an Xyz Monster (treated as an Xyz Summon) will use an on-field monster as material (e.g. the "Rank-Up-Magic" Spell Cards). This functions identically to Xyz Summoning with a single material via a monster's Summon monster effects, and typically the Xyz Materials of the on-field monster (if it is an Xyz Monster) will be transferred to the Special Summoned Xyz Monster. In the anime and manga, this is referred to as Xyz Evolution.

When an Xyz Summon is performed, the Xyz Materials turn into forms of energy whose colors match their Attributes before shooting into the air, sometimes spiraling around each other. A swirling portal known as an Overlay Network then appears, and the energy forms enter the portal. The newly Summoned Xyz Monster then emerges from the portal, its Xyz Materials, now colored in accordance with its Attribute, orbiting around it as spheres of light that leave behind fading trails.

Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL[edit]

In Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL, the portal is usually a simple red vortex that twists shut and explodes in multi-colored light, but certain monsters have unique or specially designed Overlay Networks of a different color or design. The most obvious example is the "Number" archetype, which employs a more grandiose visual of yellow particles over a dark purple nebula, forming a distinct spiral shape highly resembling a stylized galaxy.

Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V[edit]

In Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, all Xyz Summons use the "galaxy-style" portal, although compacted in size, as well as replacing the "shutting and exploding" effect with a simpler pillar of blue energy erupting out from the center. Some minor variations exist, such as "Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon" producing red energy instead.

An Xyz Summon performed using monsters that have been Pendulum Summoned is referred to as a "Pendulum-Xyz Summon". Shay Obsidian refers to an Xyz Summon performed using both an Xyz Monster and a non-Xyz Monster as materials as a Cross Xyz Summon.

Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS[edit]

In Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS, the entire Xyz Summon sequence is remade: when the Duelist declares that they are overlaying their monsters, lightning crackles from them before a blue X-shaped cybernetic array (somewhat similar in design to the Link Summoning Circuit) with four small red circles between the spokes materializes behind them. The Xyz Materials disperse into colored particles and enter the red circles and once they are set, datastream-like energy flows from the tips and forms the galaxy-style Overlay Network, now entirely colored light blue, from which the newly formed Xyz Monster emerges. The process is reminiscent of a sci-fi device being used to open a wormhole.

Video games[edit]

In Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 6 and Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Tag Force Special, all Xyz Summons use the generic red vortex animation.

In Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL World Duel Carnival, there are three different Xyz Summon animations matching the ones used in the ZEXAL anime (non-"Number", "Number", and Chaos Xyz Evolution).

In Yu-Gi-Oh! Millennium Duels, Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, all Xyz Summons use the yellow galaxy-style portal animation.

In Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, VRAINS characters, as well as Standard Duelists in Duel World (VRAINS), use a different Xyz Summon animation. This animation is based on the Xyz Summoning animation used in the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime.

Trivia[edit]

  • When Xyz Summons were revealed in the OCG, they were at originally translated by fans as "Exceed Summons". This was likely because "Xyz" is not an actual word and has no immediately obvious pronunciation. The word "Exceed" was likely the closest English equivalent to the Japanese エクシーズ Ekushīzu.
    • In the Chinese OCG, the term for "Xyz" is 超量 Chāoliàng, which means "Exceeding".
