Ryota came into possession of the card "[[The Legendary Fisherman (manga)|The Legendary Fisherman]]", which bore a resemblance to his father and decided to always use it, so he felt like he was fighting alongside his father. During his [[Battle City (manga)|Battle City]] Duel with [[Katsuya Jonouchi (manga)|Katsuya Jonouchi]], on his last turn, Ryota revived "The Legendary Fisherman", rather than the stronger "[[Fortress Whale (manga)|Fortress Whale]]". Jonouchi questioned this decision and Ryota explained the sentimental significance of the card and how he could not bare to leave it in the Graveyard.<ref name="d 183" />
Ryota decided to give Jonouchi "The Legendary Fisherman" in addition to "Fortress Whale" after their Duel, per the [[Ante Duel|ante]] rule. Although "Fortress Whale" was his rarest, "The Legendary Fisherman" was the most valuable to him. Jonouchi could not accept at first, knowing what the card meant to Ryota. However Ryota insisted that if his father were present, he would tell him he is putting too much fate into a card that looks like him and should really follow his heart. He believed that his father would always fight by his side, even without the card.<ref name="d 183" />
