"Charmer", known as "Spirit Charmer" (霊使い Reitsukai) in the Japanese version, is an archetype of six Level 3 Spellcaster Flip monsters with 500 ATK and 1500 DEF.
+
The "Charmers" ("Spirit Envoys" (霊使い Reitsukai) in the OCG) are a series of six Level 3 Spellcaster-Type Flip Effect Monster Cards with 500 ATK and 1500 DEF. There is one "Charmer" for each main Attribute, making this a Six Attributes series. The effect of each "Charmer" allows it to take control of 1 opponent's face-up monster of the same Attribute as that "Charmer" for as long as the "Charmer" is face-up on the field.
History
+

The original four "Charmers", "Aussa", "Eria", "Hiita", and "Wynn", were first released in The Lost Millennium. Two packs later, in Elemental Energy, they had their "Familiar-Possessed" forms released, and their final forms were released two packs after that, in Enemy of Justice. "Dharc" and "Lyna", the DARK and LIGHT "Charmers", do not follow this trend: "Dharc", which was released in The Duelist Genesis, did not get his "Familiar-Possessed" form until 14 packs later in Order of Chaos, and "Lyna", which was released in The Shining Darkness, did not get her "Familiar-Possessed" form until it came out 28 packs latter in Maximum Crisis. "Dharc" appears to be the only male "Charmer" in the archetype; this is supported by its German, Italian and Spanish names (with the masculine nouns "Zauberer", "Ammaliatore" and "Encantador" instead of the feminine "Zaubererin", "Ammaliatrice" and "Encantadora"), but refuted by its French name (with the feminine "Charmeuse").
+
Originally, there were only four "Charmers", released in The Lost Millennium (one for each elemental Attribute of FIRE, WATER, WIND, and EARTH, meaning the series was a Four Elements series), until the DARK "Charmer" was released in The Duelist Genesis, and finally, the LIGHT "Charmer" was released in The Shining Darkness. The "Charmers" also have three more advanced series: "Familiar-Possessed", "Tribute Charmers"<!-- any suggestions for a better name? I'm going to hold off on creating an article or tagging the cards until we agree on one -->, and "Spirit Arts".
Design
+

There is one "Charmer" for each Attribute excluding DIVINE. The effect of each "Charmer" allows it to take control of 1 opponent's face-up monster of the same Attribute as that "Charmer" after it was flipped face-up, for as long as the "Charmer" stays face-up on the field.
+
Each "Charmer" features a familiar, a Level 1 or 2 monster with the same Attribute as the "Charmer".
Each "Charmer" features a familiar, a Level 1 or 2 monster with the same Attribute as the "Charmer", most being Normal Monsters from the earliest OCG sets. They also also have two sets of advanced forms ("Familiar-Possesseds" and Cataclysmic Charmers), and a series of similarly Attribute-centered Trap Cards known as Spiritual Arts depicting them.
+

According to The Valuable Book 8, 「霊使い」 stands for 「精霊使い」 (Spirit Charmer), 「霊術」 stands for 「精霊術」 (Spirit Art).

Akina Fujiwara designed the "Charmers", although she did not draw their Cataclysmic forms.

Playing style
"Unpossessed" is the key card of this deck, preventing "Charmer" monsters from being destroyed by battle allowing their effects to be activated, and also to Special Summon Spellcaster monsters with 1500 DEF from the Deck, including not members of this archetype like "Injection Fairy Lily" or "Windwitch - Glass Bell".

"Awakening of the Possessed" increase the ATK of the player's monsters, protect "Charmers" and "Familiar-Possessed" monsters from being destroyed by card effects and also let the player draw a card if a monster with 1850 original ATK is Normal/Special Summoned, including not members of this archetype like the "Fairy Tail" monsters.

This theme was one of those featured in the Yu-Gi-Oh! CARD GAME THE CHRONICLES video.

A good way of making sure your opponent has monsters of the desired Attribute is by using cards that changes them to the desired one,ex.: "DNA Transplant" or "Scroll of Bewitchment". Then you can use the monster you just got from your opponent to Special Summon the Familiar-Possessed or use them for the Charmers Trap Cards. One good strategy is placing the Charmer monster face-down, then using "Scroll of Bewitchment" to change the enemies monster attribute, Then using "Book of Taiyou" to flip the Charmer and take the monster. The use of "Stumbling" is also recommended as your opponent will Summon to try and attack next turn. Also the use of the Extra Deck is a possibility, with cards like "Number 17: Leviathan Dragon", "Number 20: Giga-Brilliant", "Tempest Magician" and "Explosive Magician".

Trivia
 +
* The original four "Charmers", "Aussa", "Eria", "Hiita", and "Wynn", were first released in The Lost Millennium. Two packs later, in Elemental Energy, they had their "Familiar-Possessed" forms released, and their final forms were released two packs after that, in Enemy of Justice. "Dharc" and "Lyna", however, do not follow this trend; "Dharc", which was released in The Duelist Genesis, did not get his "Familiar-Possessed" form until Order of Chaos, some 14 packs later, and "Lyna", which was released in The Shining Darkness, still doesn't have her "Familiar-Possessed" form; neither of them have their final form yet, either.
 +
* Akina Fujiwara designed the "Charmers" (and some other cards), though she did not draw their final forms.
 +
** "Raging Flame Sprite", "Whirlwind Prodigy" and "Night's End Sorcerer" appear to be drawn by her, but aren't considered "Charmers".
 +
* Newer sets have released new incarnations of three of the "Charmers", with "Gishki Ariel", "Winda, Priestess of Gusto", and "Milla the Temporal Magician" bearing obvious similarities to the original "Charmers", even wearing their original outfits with some additions.  Whether new versions of the remaining "Charmers" will be made to match has yet to be seen.
 +
* Many fans speculate that "Elemental Mistress Doriado" is a teacher-like figure to "Aussa", "Eria", "Hiita", "Lyna", and "Wynn", as she is LIGHT, but also treated as FIRE, WATER, EARTH and WIND.
 +
* If one were to study the cards closely enough, it is entirely possible for the "story" of the "Charmers" to be discovered. Their story being, that it is possible they sacrificed their lives with their respective "Spirit Art", to stop some unknown force, and their bodies being taken by their familiars (hence the "Familiar-Possessed" cards) to continue to fight, as they seem to be wearing the "Ribbon of Rebirth" while in this form. Then be reincarnated later on after they have truly died/the familiar's magic powers have run out, like "Eria" being reincarnated into "Gishki Ariel"; however, "Lyna" and possibly "Dharc" could be the only exceptions, as they have yet to have a "Familiar-Possessed" form and "Spirit Art" card.
 +
** This could also be a part of the story. "Dharc" and "Lyna" are both wearing handcuffs, so they could have been 'released' into the world as new magicians, perhaps to carry on the legacy of the other "Charmers".
 +
*** Or the whole reason for what happened to the original "Charmers", was to save "Dharc" and "Lyna" from some kind of prison.
