What is ?/? attack/defense treated as? Is it o/o? — This unsigned comment was made by Batteriespwn (talkcontribs) 21:48, 26 June 2009

  • It means that the monster's ATK/DEF depends by its effect. ATEMVEGETA (Talk) 22:01, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

I mean like off the field, can it be searched, say by Chaos-End Master — This unsigned comment was made by Batteriespwn (talkcontribs) 22:34, 26 June 2009

While not on the field, ? is undefined.  ? is not a number, so ? cannot be less than 1600, so a monster with ? ATK cannot be Special Summoned by "Chaos-End Master".
While on the field, ? is treated as 0 (although the monster's effect usually sets the ATK/DEF, so you don't need to worry about it).

I am just curious, but why is it's attack and defense 0/0. Especially if it's negated. If it's in the deck, then isn't it's effect negated. Why do they make stupid cards with ?/?. Instead they should all say 0/0, and their effect is active in the deck. And they say "This card's original attack is -"

I'm curious as to why they do that. I ask alot of questions :) 04:07, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

It's probably to get around cards being able to search these sorts of things. Think what broken things Sangan would be able to do like this. Also, note that some cards affect only original ATK, and other things can mess with ATK/DEF increases.

Thus, for example, Megarock Dragon with 4 or more removed Rocks to Summon it will have too high an ATK to be killed by Elemental Hero Thunder Giant's effect, compared to if it were 0/0 and raised its ATK for each removed Rock. At the same time, Overworked would also do nothing to it. It's a nice asset this way.

As for the effect negating thing, their original ATK/DEF values depend on the effect. If there's no effect to affect them, it's set to 0 for convenience purposes. In the deck, these mechanics will not apply and thus their effects are not exactly "negated", so they keep the undefined "?" to lock off value-based searching. --User:Gadjiltron|Gadjiltron]] 04:14, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Monsters on the field MUST have ATK and DEF values - this is why ? becomes 0 on the field. Other than on the field, cards do not need ATK and DEF, so ? remains undefined.
Its ATK being ? is not an effect. It is -- I think the correct word is property? It is just like a monster being Level 4 or being a Tuner.

If I use Blackwing-Gale the Whirlwind's effect on a ?/? monster will it have no effect? Or will Gale half the Atk/Def the monster gets from it's effect? 96.234.112.224 15:21, May 15, 2010 (UTC)

gale halves the current attack. It doesn't matter if it is original attack or attack by an effect, it is simply halved. -dest- 19:26, May 15, 2010 (UTC)
