Question: The card's text says: "When this card battles, Battle Damage to your opponent becomes 0.", so if it attacks directly, will it inflict damage?

  • If a monster "battles" it means it is fighting with another monster. I'd say Beast Machine King Barbaros Ür's effect is only applied when it battles a monster and not when attacking directly. ATEMVEGETA (Talk) 07:26, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
"Battles" means to perform Damage Calculation. You still perform Damage Calculation when you attack directly, so the effect of "Beast Machine King Barbaros Ür" will still be applied.

Hmm....I don't think that a monster "battles" when it attacks directly! Are you sure about that? ATEMVEGETA (Talk) 22:04, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, there's "Chainsaw Insect", whose OCG text says "When this card battles". Its effect will activate if it attacks directly.
You still perform Damage Calculation when you attack directly. This is why you can use the effect of "Injection Fairy Lily" when you attack directly. Since you perform still Damage Calculation, you still battle.

Oh! Ok then! By the way, Big Core and B.E.S. Covered Core read the same thing, but there is no (at least TCG) ruling about what happens if it attacks directly! But if the Japanese text of Chainsaw Insect reads that, then the effect should work if the monster attacks directly! ATEMVEGETA (Talk) 22:22, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

battling..

the rules state that when it involves the word 'battling' the monster has to be attacked or attacked by a monster, the term ur looking for is direct damage thus battling is not needed for direct damage.. thank you :P — This unsigned comment was made by 92.236.149.155 (talkcontribs) 17:15, 11 August 2009

There is no ruling which states that. The monster goes through Damage Calculation, so it is considered to battle.
"Direct damage" is a dated term, and is no longer used.
