i was told today that i could only activate royal tribute if both me and my opponent have monsters in our hand. is that true? this is what happened, i only had magic and traps in my hand and of course necrovalley on the field and i activate royal tribute, is this legal?

  • From the rulings: "Both players must show their hands to the opponent when "Royal Tribute" resolves." Nothing on point, but I'm suggesting that means something has to be discarded. Danny Lilithborne 08:13, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

umm i don't know, that's when it resolves. my friend claims that it is similar to that of hand destruction. it can't be activated if u or ur opponent don't have 2 or more cards in their hand

  • The only requirement for Royal Tribute to be activated is Necrovalley being on the field. You can activate RT if one of the players doesnt have a monster.--Teba64 18:16, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
The general rule is: you can't activate a card if you know it won't do anything.
You don't know what's in your opponent's hand, so you can't know if your opponent has any monsters. You can always activate it if your opponent has at least 1 card if his hand, since it might be a monster ("Royal Tribute" still might do something, so you can still activate it).
"Hand Destruction" is different, since it only requires two cards (not Monster cards or anything else) to be discarded. You can clearly see if your opponent has enough cards in his hand. If your opponent has 1 or less cards, you know that "Hand Destruction" won't do anything when it resolves, so you can't activate it.
