It lets the person obtain a "Number" card from a defeated opponent, similar to the way in which Astral does it, but by bitter means: stealing the opponent's soul. When someone uses Photon Hand, an illuminated hand and arm forms, stretching out and entering the fallen foe. The "Number" card initially appears in hand takes away the uservictim's hand as a glowing orb before morphing back into the card. This technique steals the soul of the victim, who ages considerably after losing their "Number" which also and leaves them catatonic. Then the user can compress the "Numbers" attached to that soul. Kaito was told by Mr. Heartland that all "Number" holders are evil, so stealing their souls does not matter.
Jin also possessed this ability, though how or from whom he acquired it is not known.
Kaito claimed that he doesn't know what happens to the souls he takes. Jin claimed that the "Numbers" consume their owner's hearts and drain their souls which would explain why Photon Hand also takes must take the victim's soul. In episode 22, Kaito used the Photon Hand on Ryoga Kamishiro thinking he had a "Number", but noticed there were no "Numbers", then he absorbed the soul. Kaito said he doesn't like taking souls, so it is possible that the souls taken away cannot be returned, otherwise Kaito would have returned Ryoga's soul.
