A '''Pendulum Monster''' (Japanese: ペンデュラムモンスター ''Pendyuramu Monsutā'', abbreviated {{Ruby|P|ペンデュラム}}モンスター in [[card text]]), also called a '''Pendulum Card''' in the early episodes of the ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V]]'' anime, is a type of [[Monster Card]] that is half green. They first appeared in the ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V]]'' anime, and were introduced to the ''[[OCG]]'' and ''[[TCG]]'' in ''[[Starter Deck 2014]]'' and ''[[Super Starter: Space-Time Showdown]]'' respectively. A Pendulum Monster can also be [[activated]] from the [[hand]] used as a [[Spell Card]], by placing it in a [[Pendulum Zone]]. It , then it can be used to perform [[Pendulum Summon]]s.<ref name="vjump">{{cite web | url = https://ygorganization.com/ocg-v-jump-time/ | title = <nowiki>The Organization | [OCG] Pendulum Summons, New Mechanics, and ARC-V News!</nowiki> | publisher = YGOrganization | date = February 17, 2014 | accessdate = January 30, 2017}}</ref><ref name="newrulebook">{{cite web | url = https://ygorganization.com/newrules/ | title = <nowiki>The Organization | [OCG] Points of Interest from the New Rulebook</nowiki> | publisher = YGOrganization | date = March 6, 2014 | accessdate = January 30, 2017}}</ref><ref name="pendulum">{{cite web | url = http://www.yugioh-card.com/en/pendulum/ | title = Yu-Gi-Oh! So far, [[Normal Monster|Normal]], [[Effect Monster|Effect]], [[Synchro Monster|Synchro]], [[Xyz Monster|Xyz]], and [[Fusion Monster|Fusion]] Pendulum Monsters have been seen. Pendulum Monsters can also be [[Tuner monster|Tuner]] and [[Flip monster]]s.
==Mechanics==
While not in a Pendulum Zone, a A Pendulum Monster is treated can be used in two ways: Either as a Monster Cardcard by Summoning it, and its Monster Effects are applied, but its or activate it as a [[Pendulum EffectSpell Card]]s are not. If it is also a Normal or Effect Monster, it can be Normal Summoned/Set from the hand or Special Summoned by appropriate card effects, just like any other Normal or Effect Monster. If it is also a Fusion, Synchro or Xyz Monster, it can be Fusion, Synchro or Xyz Summoned (respectively) from face-down in the Extra Deck, just like any other Fusion, Synchro or Xyz Monster.[[Pendulum Zone]]
While not in a Pendulum Zone, a Pendulum Monster is treated as a Monster Card, and its Monster Effects are applied, but its [[Pendulum Effect]]s are not. If it is also a Normal or Effect Monster, it can be Normal Summoned/Set from the hand or Special Summoned by appropriate card effects, just like any other Normal or Effect Monster. While in a Pendulum Zone, it is treated as a Spell Card and not as a monster, as long as it remains in a Pendulum Zone. A Pendulum Monster can be activated from the hand as a Spell Card in your Pendulum Zone, but it is not possible for any cards to be [[Set]] in the Pendulum Zone. Upon [[resolving]], it remains [[face-up]] in the Pendulum Zone as a Spell Card, and gains its [[Pendulum Effect]]s, if any (its Monster Effects are not applied while treated as a Spell Card). Although a Pendulum Monster is treated as a Spell Card while in the Pendulum Zone, it is not considered a [[Normal Spell Card|Normal]], [[Continuous Spell Card|Continuous]], [[Field Spell Card|Field]], [[Equip Spell Card|Equip]], [[Quick-Play Spell Card|Quick-Play]], or [[Ritual Spell Card]]. If a Pendulum Zone is already occupied, you cannot place a new Pendulum Monster in itto replace the old one. As long as there are available Pendulum ZonesHowever, there is no limit to the number of times a Pendulum Monster can be activated from the hand per turnas long as there are available Pendulum Zones.<ref name="vjump" /><ref name="newrulebook" /><ref name="pendulum" />
Once per turn, during the [[Main Phase]], while there are Pendulum Monsters in both Pendulum Zones, the [[turn player]] can perform a [[Pendulum Summon]], using the Pendulum Monsters' [[Pendulum Scale]]s to determine the Levels of the monsters that can be Summoned.<ref name="vjump" /><ref name="newrulebook" /><ref name="pendulum" />
When a Pendulum Monster (even if it is [[face-down]]) would be [[Send|sent]] from the [[field]] to the [[Graveyard]], either as a Monster Card or Spell Card, it is placed face-up in the [[Extra Deck Zone]] instead. (Pendulum Monsters can cause the total size of the Extra Deck to be larger than would be allowed during Deck building.) A Pendulum Monster is sent to the Graveyard like normal if it is sent from any location other than the field (specifically, if it would be sent from the [[hand]], [[Main Deck]], or [[Extra Deck]] to the Graveyard; has its [[activate|activation]] as a [[Spell Card]] or [[Summon]] [[negate]]d; is [[detach]]ed from an [[Xyz Monster]]; or the Xyz Monster it is [[attach]]ed to [[leaves the field]]). If the effect of a card like "[[Macro Cosmos]]" (which [[banish]]es cards which would be sent to the Graveyard) or "[[Grave Protector]]" (which [[shuffle]]s monsters [[destroyed by battle]] into the Deck) is applying, this will override the Pendulum Monster's ability to go to the Extra Deck. A face-up Pendulum Monster in the Extra Deck Zone can be Summoned again by Pendulum Summon, as long as its Level is within the Scales.<ref name="vjump" /><ref name="newrulebook" /><ref name="pendulum" />
==Card layout==
As the Pendulum Effects and the Pendulum Scales take up the space where the [[Set Number]] would usually be placed, it is placed in the bottom left corner of the card instead, in the same line as the [[ATK]]/[[DEF]] values of the Pendulum Monster. The art frame of a Pendulum Monster is increased in size, to the same width as the Effect boxes, and the Pendulum Effect box is partially transparent, allowing the art to be seen beneath it. The upper bit of the Effect box (more or less corresponding to the Type line's height) is also transparent, but to a lesser degree than the Pendulum Effect box.

== Extra Deck Pendulum Monsters ==
While most Pendulum Monsters are also Normal or Effect Monsters, and thus originate in the Main Deck, a small number of Pendulum Monsters are also Fusion, Synchro, or Xyz Monsters, and thus originate face-down in the Extra Deck, and then be Fusion, Synchro or Xyz Summoned (respectively) from face-down. Because they cannot be activated in the Pendulum Zone from the hand, they have effects to place themselves in the Pendulum Zone. While an Extra Dcek Pendulum Monsters are placed face-up in the Extra Deck, they cannot be Summoned by Fusion, Synchro and Xyz Summon, respectively. They can now be Pendulum Summoned instead.

As Xyz Monsters do not have Levels, Xyz Pendulum Monsters usually have an effect that allows them to be Pendulum Summoned from the Extra Deck should they be face-up and their original Rank matches a Level whose monsters their owner can currently Pendulum Summon.
==Playing style==
A good Pendulum-based Deck has the ability to do what the anime calls "going beyond the Pendulum", which involves using Pendulum Summoning to gather [[Material]]s for a [[Fusion Monster|Fusion]]/, [[Synchro Monster|Synchro]]/, [[Xyz Summon|Xyz]] or [[Link Summon]], as [[Tribute]]s for a [[Tribute Summon|Tribute]]/or [[Ritual Summon]], or to activate multiple effects that activate when Summoned(possibly using [[SEGOC]] to prevent the important one of being negated).
Pendulum Monsters' main weakness is their hand advantage cost to place in the Pendulum Zone, causing them to be vulnerable to effects such as those of "[[Black Rose Dragon]]". These "[[nuke]]" effects will destroy Pendulum Monsters in the Pendulum Zones as well as any Pendulum Monsters on the field, which will shut down any deck that relies on Pendulum Summoning until new Pendulum Scales can be placed. Furthermore, cards like "[[Hand Destruction]]" and "[[Solemn Warning]]" that can cause the Pendulum Monsters to be sent to the Graveyard can be problematic as well, since most Pendulum Monster Decks don't have ways to get cards back from the Graveyard, though you can remedy to this with cards like "[[Pot of Riches]]".
Cards that [[banish]] other cards (like "[[Divine Knight Ishzark]]" and "[[Chaos Sorcerer]]"), cards that specifically counter Spell Cards (like "[[Spell Canceller]]"), and cards that deplete the [[Extra Deck]] (like "[[Zaborg the Mega Monarch]]" and "[[Extra Gate]]") can also be problems for Pendulum-focused Decks. "[[Anti-Spell Fragrance]]" will also prevent Pendulum Monsters being placed in the Pendulum Zone at all, since cards cannot be Set in the Pendulum Zone. "[[Pot of Acquisitiveness]]", Quick-Play Spell/Trap removal ("[[Mystical Space Typhoon]]", etc.) and "[[Imperial Iron Wall]]" can deal with these cards, however.
In the anime, when a Duelist uses Pendulum Summoning to gather the materials required for a [[Fusion Summon|Fusion]], [[Synchro Summon|Synchro]], or [[Xyz Summon]], it is referred to as performing a "Pendulum-Fusion", "Pendum-Synchro", or "Pendulum-Xyz Summon", respectively. A Pendulum Monster that is also a Fusion, Synchro, or Xyz Monster is referred to as a "Fusion-Pendulum", "Synchro-Pendulum", or "Xyz-Pendulum Monster", respectively.

==Extra Deck Pendulum Monsters==
While most Pendulum Monsters are also Normal or Effect Monsters, and thus originate in the Main Deck, a small number of Pendulum Monsters are also Fusion, Synchro, or Xyz Monsters, and thus originate in the Extra Deck. Because they cannot be activated in the Pendulum Zone from the hand, they have effects to place themselves in the Pendulum Zone. As Xyz Monsters do not have Levels, Xyz Pendulum Monsters usually have an effect that allows them to be Pendulum Summoned from the Extra Deck should they be face-up and their original Rank matches a Level whose monsters their owner can currently Pendulum Summon.
