===Etymology===
His character's last name, ''Akaba'', means "Red Horse". Declan's surname is similar to that of [[Seto Kaiba]] from ''[[Yu-Gi-Oh! (anime)|Yu-Gi-Oh!]]'', whose name also has also contains the character 馬 (''Uma'', Horse), serving as another similarity between the two characters. His given Japanese name of Reiji means "Zero Child"; he shares the chaarcter of "Zero" with his father, adoptive brother, and [[Ray Akaba]]. With a different kanji(怜侍), it can also mean "cleavernesscleverness".
His dub name, ''Declan'', is likely come from ''[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ren%C3%A9_Descartes René Descartes]'', a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist. A theorem named after Descartes (Descartes' theorem) also involves connection with circles, connecting him with his Japanese name's meaning.
===Duel Academy===
When Riley started to get scared after seeing Leo, Declan calmed him down. He listened to Yusho and Leo's past creating the [[ARC System]] together, but was surprised it came from the [[Original Dimension]]. He learned about how Leo created the ARC System, which caused [[Duel Monsters]] to evolve but lead led to the world's ruin and by a Duelist named [[Zarc]]. When Riley started to get scared after sensing great anger, Declan thought something must be wrong. He then learned about how Zarc fused with his [[Four Dimension Dragons|four dragons]] to become the [[Supreme Dragon King Zarc (character)|Supreme Dragon King Zarc]] and was shocked that he gained godlike power. When Riley got scared after Leo mentioned how the Supreme Dragon King Zarc destroyed everything, Declan tried to calm him down by telling him the story is a myth but Leo retorted that its true due to seeing it with his very eyes.<ref name="ep126">{{episode|Yu-Gi-Oh! Declan was happy when Yuya made it to the inner chambers and wondered what Leo meant by bringing back the truth, but was surprised when he brought Zuzu and her counterparts to the room. He was also shocked when Leo sealed [[the Doktor]] into [[The Doktor (card)|a card]]. He then learned the rest of Leo's past of how he created [[Four Dimension Bracelets|four cards]] that could defeat Supreme Dragon King Zarc but were stolen by his daughter [[Ray Akaba|Ray]] and was surprised that Leo had a daughter. He also learned how Ray defeated Zarc and Leo being sent to a [[Paradise City|strange town]], where he recreated the [[ARC System]] and just met Yusho. He was shocked when Leo revealed that Ray might be somewhere in the Four Dimensions due to his memories coming back. Declan revealed that was when Leo began immersed in his research, ignoring his family and how his mom mother changed. He then revealed how he was going find out how what Leo was doing and punish him for hurting his mother. After arriving at Duel Academy, he then learned his father was trying to start a war of aggression there. But, when Leo told him he didn't want that, Declan angrily wanted know what it was it then. He was surprised when Leo revealed that he believed in Ray's survival and found it in Duel Academy. Declan then figured out it was Celina and learned that Ray had spilt split into Zuzu, Celina, [[Lulu Obsidian|Lulu]], and [[Rin]]. He was surprised when Leo was going to resurrect Ray, but wondered how carding everyone will bring her and the world back. He then saw [[Fusion Dimension Machine|ARC-V]] and was shocked that it will bring the back the fifth dimension and Ray. Declan remembered reading the [[Revival Zero]] file that had Celina and Yuri in it and wondered if Celina was the Fusion Dimensional counterpart of Ray, then Yuri was Zarc's incarnation. He was shocked when Leo asked him to help defeat Yuya because he was the reincarnation of Zarc and his sister sacrificed and spilt split herself to defeat him. Declan refused because Yuya's Dueltaining brought smiles to a lot of people and stopped Duel Academy's invasion of the Xyz Dimension. He then blamed Leo for disturbing the Four Dimensions peace and bringing fear to people for one world. He then teamed up Yuya and challenged Leo to a Duel.<ref name="ep127">{{episode|Yu-Gi-Oh! When Leo revealed that ARC-V will swallow the Four Dimensions to create a new one, Declan was surprised. He accepted Yuya's help and [[Pendulum]]-[[Fusion]], [[Synchro]], and [[Xyz Summon]]ed "{{anime|D/D/D Flame King Genghis}}", "{{anime|D/D/D Gust King Alexander||later anime}}", and "{{anime|D/D/D Wave King Caesar}}". He then used "[[Dark Contract with the Monopoly Seal]]" to prevent Leo from using the same summoning methods as long his monsters remain on the field. When Leo tried convince him again to join him again, Declan still refused. He told Leo that if he don't fuse the dimensions with ARC-V, Zarc won't revive and the Four Dimensions will be at peace. He even told Leo that Yuya is his friend and that his ego is pushing Zarc's revival. He was surprised when Leo used [[Pendulum Summon]] and used Yuya's "{{anime|Timegazer Magician}}'s" [[Pendulum Scale]] to increase his. His "Genghis" was destroyed and took effect damage from the effect of "[[Spirit Tech Force - Pendulum Governor]]". Declan was also unable to attack with "Alexander" and "Caesar" due to the second effect of "Pendulum Governor". When Leo asked him a third time to join him, Declan was surprised by Yuya's [[Awakened|awakening]] and told him not to lose it. During their second Duel however, Declan showed indifference towards Yuya's feelings, disregarding them as a weakness even though he acknowledged the strength that they gave him, and instead used them to manipulate him and push him to become stronger. During their Duel, he refused to tell him the truth about [[Zuzu Boyle|Zuzu]]'s disappearance and only told him the truth just as they were about to leave for the [[Synchro Dimension]], where Zuzu was (and even then, likely largely due to [[Celina]] figuring this out herself and so Yuya would be more determined to go there). Despite his attitude, Declan continues to respect Yuya and trust him as shown when he assured Riley that Yuya won't be foolish enough to accept Roget's offer. He also inadvertently saved Yuya from becoming Roget's puppet, where if he were not been able to defeat Sector Security in the Executive Council's room on time, Roget's plan of brainwashing Yuya would have remain unaltered, and Yuya would have undoubtedly become a soldier of Roget.
Although Yuya tends to disagree with Declan's methods, he knows that at heart Declan is a person he can trust. This is demonstrated when Roget attempted to use the father-son relationship of Leo Akaba with Declan as "proof" that Declan was using the Lancers for his own ends. However Yuya defended Declan causing him to smile.
Likewise when his father Leo requests Declan to join him to defeat Yuya since he is a part of Zarc and by proxy a threat to the world, Declan refuses and defends Yuya as his own person who genuinely seeks to resolve conflicts and bring smiles to people with his [[Dueltainer|Dueltaining]], and promptly challenges his father to a Duel along with Yuya, in which Declan stands by Yuya's side despite Leo's warnings affirming he truly thinks of Yuya as a friend.
