* Each player makes a Deck using 40 cards.<ref name="d 9" /> The Decks are shuffled before a Duel.<ref name="d 36">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh!|36|ref}}</ref>
* There are two four kinds of cards; [[Monster Card]]s ,[[Magic Card]], [[Trap Card]] and [[Spell Card]]s.<ref name="d 10">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh!|10|ref}}</ref>
* Each player starts with 2000 [[Life Points]]. If a player runs out of Life Points they lose.<ref name="d 9" />
* At the beginning of a Duel, each player draws five cards, which become their [[hand]].<ref name="d 37">{{chapter|Yu-Gi-Oh!|37|ref}}</ref>
