Synchron Guide

By BobaFett2

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's took the world by storm. Although the "Lightsworn" monsters were dominating the metagame, and were one of the first truly "modern" decks, they were nothing compared to what would come with 5D's. A whole new monster type, Synchro Monsters, as well as a subtype of monster, Tuner monsters, arrived, with more ways to get out powerful monsters arriving with each pack. Suddenly, you didn't need powerful, high-level effect monsters in your Main Deck - they would reside in your Extra Deck, leaving more space for better monsters. The main character of 5D's, Yusei Fudo, used a host of "Synchron" monsters along with "Warrior" monsters to Synchro Summon a number of Machine-Type and Warrior-Type "Warrior" Synchro Monsters. Of the "Synchron Monsters", a few have proved incredibly powerful.

Note: This is also a guide for "Junk", "Nitro", and "Warriors".

Main Cards (Synchron)

Monsters

  • Bri Synchron: "Bri Synchron" is a Level 4 Tuner monster with 1500 ATK. When it's sent to the Graveyard for a Synchro Summon, the Synchro Monsters gains 600 ATK but its effects are negated until the End Phase. The monster is rather mediocre as the effect of a Synchro Monster is usually the most important part.
  • Changer Synchron: "Changer Synchron" is a Level 1 Tuner monster with 0 ATK and DEF. It changes the battle position of one monster you opponent controls when it's used for a Synchro Summon. It's not a horrible effect, but it gives no advantage and Level 1 Tuner monsters (with the exception of "Spore", "Fishborg Blaster", "Effect Veiler", and "Glow-up Bulb") aren't all that good.
  • Drill Synchron: "Drill Synchron" is a Level 3 Tuner monster with 800 ATK. While you control it, all of your Warrior-Type monsters inflict piercing damage, and once per turn you can draw a card if they inflict piercing damage to your opponent, you can draw a card. It's good for two reasons - first, a +1 is pretty good, and second, it makes "Drill Warrior". It's not as popular as "Quickdraw Synchron" but it's still not bad.
  • Fleur Synchron: "Fleur Synchron" is a Level 2 Tuner monster with 400 ATK. When it's sent to the Graveyard for a Synchro Summon you can Special Summon a Level 2 or lower monster from your hand. It's not very useful because you can't gain any advantage off of it. It is required for "Chevalier de Fleur", but "Quickdraw Synchron" makes it unnecessary.
  • Hyper Synchron: "Hyper Synchron" is a Level 4 Tuner monster with 1600 ATK. When used as a Synchro Material monster for a Dragon-Type Synchro Monster, the monster gains 800 ATK and is Banished during the End Phase. Because of this, it's rather bad.
  • Junk Synchron: "Junk Synchron" is by far the strongest and most splashable "Synchron" monster. It's a Level 3 Tuner monster that Special Summons a Level 2 or lower monster from your Graveyard when it's Normal Summoned, negating its effect. This leads to combos with "Doppelwarrior" and "One for One", or with "Tuningware" and "Machine Duplication", or other abilities. The best Synchro Monsters to Summon with "Junk Synchron" are "Ally of Justice Catastor" and "T.G. Hyper Librarian", not "Junk Warrior". It's also one of the few Warrior-Type "Synchron" monsters, making it a target for "Reinforcement of the Army". Lastly, it is one of the required Tuner monsters for "Junk Warrior", "Junk Defender", "Junk Archer", "Junk Berserker", and "Junk Destroyer".
  • Nitro Synchron: "Nitro Synchron" is a Level 2 Tuner monster with 300 ATK. When it's used in the Synchro Summon of a "Nitro" monster you can draw a card. While this effect would be pretty good, there is only one "Nitro" Synchro Monster, "Nitro Warrior", so it's rather useless.
  • Quickdraw Synchron: "Quickdraw Synchron" is a Level 5 Tuner monster with 700 ATK and 1400 DEF. It can only be used for the Synchro Summon of a monster that requires a "Synchron" Tuner monster, but it also can substitute itself for any "Synchron" Tuner monster. This allows you to Synchro Summon "Drill Warrior", "Chevalier de Fleur", and "Nitro Warrior" without having to use any of the lesser "Synchron" Tuner monsters. In addition to all this, you can Special Summon it from your hand by sending a monster from your hand to your Graveyard. This combos with "Level Eater" (which then reduces "Quickdraw" to Level 4 and allows you to Synchro Summon a Level 5 monster), "Quillbolt Hedgehog" (which then Special Summons itself), and "Doppelwarrior" (because you can follow up by Normal Summoning a "Junk Synchron").
  • Road Synchron: "Road Synchron" is a Level 4 Tuner monster with 1600 ATK. If used for the Synchro Summon of a monster other than "Road Warrior", it becomes Level 3. While "Road Warrior" is an amazing card, it requires two non-Tuner monsters, making "Road Synchron" rather useless.
  • Synchron Explorer: "Synchron Explorer" is the odd one out of the "Synchron Family" - it's a Level 2 monster with 0 ATK and 700 DEF, and it isn't a Tuner monster. Instead, when it's Normal Summoned, you can Special Summon a "Synchron" monster from your Graveyard, usually "Junk Synchron" or "Quickdraw Synchron". It's quite useful, although out of the three most commonly used "Synchron" (not counting "Formula Synchron"), monsters it's the least commonly used.
  • Turbo Synchron: "Turbo Synchron" is a Level 1 Tuner monster that has 100 ATK. When it attacks your opponent's monster, you can change that monster to Defense Position. Then, after taking Battle Damage, you can Special Summon a monster from your hand with ATK equal to or less than the amount of "Battle Damage" you took. It's not a terrible effect but it isn't necessary - "Marauding Captain" and "Goblindbergh" are both better.
  • Unknown Synchron: "Unknown Synchron" is a Level 1 Tuner monster with 0 ATK and DEF. Once during the duel, you can Special Summon it from your hand while your opponent controls a monster and you control no monsters. It's a useful card but not spectacularly so. Sometimes it is used as a tech but it's never very important within a deck.

Synchro Monsters:

  • Formula Synchron: "Formula Synchron" is the most powerful "Synchron" monster - not only is it a Level 2 Synchro Monster with 700 ATK and 1500 DEF, but it's also a Tuner monster, allowing it to be used in many powerful combos. In addition to that, when it's Synchro Summoned, you get to draw a card, making its Synchro Summon a +0 at worst. It's very good and should be used in any deck that has even a small chance of summoning it.

Spells

  • Tuning: "Tuning" is an incredibly useful card for any "Synchron" deck - it searches your deck for any "Synchron" Tuner monster and then sends the top card of your deck to your Graveyard.

Main Cards (Junk)

Monsters

  • Junk Blader: "Junk Blader" has 1800 ATK and you can Banish a "Junk" monster in your Graveyard to have it gain 400 ATK until the End Phase. It's a decent monster and a pretty good beatstick but not very good for a dedicated Synchro deck.
  • Junk Collector: "Junk Collector" is an odd card for the "Junk" archetype: it's a Level 5 monster with 1000 ATK and 2200 DEF. During either player's turn you can Banish it and a Normal Trap Card in your Graveyard to gain that Trap Card's effect. It would be a lot better if it were Level 4, but its Level makes it rather lackluster.
  • Junk Defender: "Junk Defender" Special Summons itself from your hand when your opponent declares a direct attack. It has 500 ATK and 1800 DEF but can gain 300 DEF until the End Phase during either player's turn. It's one of the better "Junk" monsters.
  • Junk Forward: "Junk Forward" is a Level 3 monster with 900 ATK and 1400 DEF that can Special Summon itself while you control no monsters. It can be used to Tribute Summon "Junk Collector" or used in a Synchro Summon.
  • Junk Servant: "Junk Servant" is a Level 4 monster with 1500 ATK. It can Special Summon itself while you control another "Junk" monster - with "Junk Synchron" and a Level 2 monster you can make "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier".
  • Junk Synchron: See above.

Synchro Monsters:

  • Junk Archer: "Junk Archer" is a Level 7 Synchro Monster with 2300 ATK and 3000 DEF. It lets you Banish one monster your opponent controls until the End Phase, once per turn. It's useful, but not necessary, for a "Synchron" or "Junk" deck.
  • Junk Berserker: "Junk Bersker" is a Level 8 Synchro Monster with 2700 ATK. It automatically destroys any monster in Defense Position without applying Damage Calculation and by Banishing a "Junk" monster in your Graveyard you can make one of you opponent's monsters lose ATK equal to the "Junk" monster's ATK. It's one of the most powerful "Junk" monsters.
  • Junk Destroyer: "Junk Destroyer" is also a Level 8 Synchro Monster but with 2600 ATK. When Synchro Summoned, you can destroy a number of cards on the field up to the number non-Tuner monsters used for his Synchro Summon. It's roughly equal to "Junk Berserker" but really shines in a "Tuningware" deck.
  • Junk Gardna: "Junk Gardna" is a Level 6 Synchro Monster with 1400 ATK and 2600 DEF. Once per turn, you can change the battle position of one of your opponent's monsters, and they can't change it until their next End Phase. In addition to that, when destroyed, you can change the battle position of one monster on the field. "Junk Gardna" is not a bad card, but neither is it very good - "Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier", "Orient Dragon", and other cards are usually better.
  • Junk Warrior: "Junk Warrior" is a Level 5 Synchro Monster with 2300 ATK that gains ATK equal to the total ATK of all Level 2 or lower monsters on your side of the field when it's Synchro Summoned. It is not very good, simply because there are better cards than it.

Spells

  • Junk Barrage: "Junk Barrage" was released before "Junk" monsters - likewise, it is not a true "Junk" card.
  • Junk Box: "Junk Box" supports "Morphtronics", and is useless in a "Junk" deck.

Main Cards (Nitro)

Monsters

Synchro Monsters:

  • Nitro Warrior: "Nitro Warrior" is a Level 8 Synchro Monster with 2800 ATK. Once per turn, during your turn, it gains 1000 ATK during its next ATK if you activated a Spell Card that turn. In addition to that, once per turn, if it destroys your opponent's monster, you can change one of their face-up Defense Position monsters to ATK position and attack it with "Nitro Warrior". It's become less popular with the release of "Junk Berserker" but it's still a viable Synchro Monster in a "Quickdraw" deck.

Spells

Main Cards (Warrior)

Monsters

  • Backup Warrior: "Backup Warrior" is a Level 5 monster with 2100 ATK that can't be Normal Summoned or Set. Instead, if the only monsters you control are two Defense Position monsters, you can Special Summon it from your hand. The downside is that you can't Synchro Summon the turn that you summon it. It's not a terrible card, but it isn't a particularly good one either.
  • Big One Warrior: "Big One Warrior" is a Level 1 monster with 100 ATK and 600 DEF. You can Special Summon it from your hand by discarding a Level 1 monster from your hand. It's not a very good card due to its low Level.
  • Boost Warrior: "Boost Warrior" is a Level 1 monster with 300 ATK that can Special Summon itself from your hand while you control a Tuner monster and gives all Warrior-Type monsters 300 ATK. It can be useful although it's not very popular.
  • Dash Warrior: "Dash Warrior" is a Level 3 monster with 600 ATK that gains 1200 ATK while attacking (during the Damage Step only). It's not very good.
  • Doppelwarrior: "Doppelwarrior" is amazing - it's a Level 2 monster with 800 ATK that can Special Summon itself from your hand in response to a monster being Special Summoned from either player's Graveyard. In addition to that, when used in a Synchro Summon, you can Special Summon two Level 1 Doppel Tokens with 400 ATK each, leading to many combo possibilities. It's really good in "Synchron" decks.
  • Fortress Warrior: "Fortress Warrior" is a Level 2 monster with 600 ATK and 1200 DEF. You take no damage from battles involving it and once per turn it can't be destroyed by battle. It's a useful card but "Spirit Reaper" is far better.
  • Gauntlet Warrior: "Gauntlet Warrior" is a Level 2 monster that has 400 ATK and 1600 DEF. You can tribute it during either player's turn to have all Warrior-Type monsters you control gain 500 ATK and Defense until the End of the next Damage where they battle. It's not very good.
  • Level Warrior: "Level Warrior" is a Level 2 monster with 300 ATK and 600 DEF. If you control no monsters, you can Special Summon it as a Level 2 monster, but if your opponent controls a monster it is instead Level 4. It isn't a bad card, but "Cyber Dragon" is better.
  • Max Warrior: "Max Warrior" is a Level 4 monster with 1800 ATK. If it attacks your opponent's monster, it gains 400 ATK during the Damage Step, but if it destroys the monster in battle, it becomes Level 2 and its original ATK and DEF are halved. It's not a good card.
  • Rapid Warrior: "Rapid Warrior" is a Level 4 monster with 1200 ATK. Once per turn, during your Main Phase, you can activate its effect: it can attack directly this turn but your other monsters cannot attack. Its ATK is too low for it to be very useful, so it's not very good.
  • Rescue Warrior: "Rescue Warrior" is a Level 4 monster with 1600 ATK and 1700 DEF. You take no damage from battles involving it, and when it's destroyed by battle, you can return any of your monsters that are under your opponent's control back to your side of the field. It's too situational to be good.
  • Rockstone Warrior: "Rockstone Warrior" is a Level 4 monster with 1800 ATK. You take no damage from battles involving it. When it attacks and is destroyed by battle, you can Special Summon 2 Level 1 Rockstone Tokens. It's an okay card, but there are better ways of generating tokens.
  • Salvage Warrior: "Salvage Warrior" is a Level 5 monster with 1900 ATK. When it's Tribute Summoned, you can Special Summon one Tuner monster from your Graveyard. It's useful, but being a Tribute Monster makes it worse than it could be.
  • Shield Warrior: "Shield Warrior" is a Level 3 monster with 800 ATK and 1600 DEF. During damage calculation, you can Banish it from your Graveyard to prevent monsters you control from being destroyed by battle. It's a good card but doesn't do much in a "Warrior" deck.
  • Sonic Warrior: "Sonic Warrior" is a Level 2 monster with 1000 ATK. When it's sent to the Graveyard, Level 2 or lower monsters you control gain 500 ATK. It's not very good.
  • Speed Warrior: "Speed Warrior" is a Level 2 monster with 900 ATK whose ATK doubles when it's Normal Summoned until the Battle Phase of the turn. It's not very good.
  • Turret Warrior: "Turret Warrior" is a Level 5 monster with 1200 ATK and 2000 DEF. You can tribute any Warrior-Type monster to Special Summon it from your hand and give it ATK equal to that of the tributed monster. It's not that great for a "Warrior" deck although it does have its uses.

Synchro Monsters:

  • Catapult Warrior: "Catapult Warrior" has extremely mediocre stats - 1000 ATK and 1500 DEF for a Level 5 monster. It's effect, which allows you to tribute a "Junk" monster once per turn in order to inflict damage to your opponent's Life Points equal to its ATK, is equally mediocre.
  • Drill Warrior: "Drill Warrior" is a Level 6 Synchro Monster with 2400 ATK that requires "Drill Synchron" as a Synchro Material monster. Once per turn, you can halve it's original ATK to allow it to attack directly. By discarding a card during your Main Phase, you can Banish it, and it returns to your field during your next Standby Phase and adds a card from your Graveyard to your hand. This lets you recycle monsters (and even generate free tokens with "Dandylion"). It's pretty good.
  • Junk Warrior: See above.
  • Lightning Warrior: "Lightning Warrior" is a Level 7 Synchro Monster with 2400 ATK. Whenever it destroys your opponent's monster by battle, your opponent 300 points of damage for every card in their hand. While the damage it deals is far from lethal, it is a decent substitute for "Black Rose Dragon".
  • Nitro Warrior: See above.
  • Road Warrior: "Road Warrior" is a Level 8 Synchro Monster with 3000 ATK. It requires "Road Synchron" as a Tuner monster. Once per turn, it allows you to Special Summon a Level 2 or lower Warrior-Type or Machine-Type monster from your Deck. This effect is amazing, but it requires two or more non-Tuner monsters and is barely every used because of this.
  • Scarred Warrior: "Scarred Warrior" is a Level 5 Synchro Monster with 2100 ATK. Once per turn, it can't be destroyed by battle, and your opponent cannot select other Warrior-Type Synchro Monsters as ATK targets. It's pretty good, although "Ally of Justice Catastor" can destroy it.
  • Seven Swords Warrior: "Seven Swords Warrior" is a Level 7 Synchro Monster with 2300 ATK. Once per turn, when it's equipped with an Equip Card, inflict 800 points of damage to your opponent's Life Points. In addition to that, once per turn, you can send one Equip Card equipped to it to the Graveyard to destroy one face-up monster you opponent controls. It's pretty good in a Warrior-Type Equip deck but not so great outside of one.
  • Turbo Warrior: "Turbo Warrior" is a Level 6 Synchro Monster with 2500 ATK. It requires "Turbo Synchron" as a Tuner monster. When it attacks a Level 6 or higher Synchro Monster, that monster's ATK is halved until the end of the Damage Step. In addition to that, it can't be targeted by the effects of Level 6 or lower monsters. It's useful, but overshadowed by "Drill Warrior".

Other Cards

Monsters

  • Beast of the Pharaoh: "Beast of the Pharaoh" is a Level 3 Zombie-Type monster that Special Summons one Level 4 or lower Zombie-Type monster from your Graveyard when sent to the Graveyard for a Synchro Summon (including itself). "Synchron" decks can get a few Tuner monsters out in a turn, and with "Beast of the Pharaoh" they can make much longer combos.
  • Dandylion: "Dandylion" is a Level 3 Plant-Type monster that Special Summons two Level 1 tokens when sent to the Graveyard. It combos with "Debris Dragon" and is quite useful for a "Synchron" deck.
  • Debris Dragon: "Debris Dragon" is a Level 4 Tuner monster with 2000 DEF that Special Summons one monster from your Graveyard with 500 or less ATK when it's Normal Summoned. It starts many combos with "Dandylion" and "Beast of the Pharaoh" and can Special Summon "Sychron Explorer".
  • Genex Ally Birdman: "Genex Ally Birdman" is a Level 3 Tuner monster with 1400 ATK. It can Special Summon itself from your hand by returning a monster you control to your hand. It combos with "Junk Synchron".
  • Glow-Up Bulb: "Glow-Up Bulb" is a Level 1 Tuner monster with 100 ATK and DEF. It's a Plant-Type monster, so it can be searched by "Lonefire Blossom" and can be Banished for "Spore". In addition to that, it can Special Summon itself from your Graveyard (once per duel) by sending the top card of your Deck to your Graveyard.
  • Level Eater: "Level Eater" is a Level 1 monster that can Special Summon itself from your Graveyard by reducing the Level of one Level 5 or higher monster you control by one, permanently. It can combo with "Quickdraw Synchron".
  • Lonefire Blossom: By tributing a Plant-Type monster (once per turn), "Lonefire Blossom" Special Summons another Plant-Type monster from your Deck. It combos with "Dandylion" and is a useful search card.
  • Plaguespreader Zombie: "Plaguespreader Zombie" is a Level 2 Zombie-Type Tuner monster. It can Special Summon itself from your Graveyard by returning a card from your hand to the top of your Deck. It is Banished after leaving the field.
  • Quillbolt Hedgehog: "Quillbolt Hedgehog" is a Level 2 monster that can Special Summon itself from your Graveyard while you control a Tuner monster (and is Banished when it leaves the field). This combos with "Quickdraw Synchron", as you can discard it and then Special Summon it.
  • Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter: "Ryko" is a Level 2 monster that sends the top three cards of your Deck to your Graveyard when it's flipped and destroys one card on the field. It's used to set up your Graveyard.
  • Spore: "Spore" is a Level 1 Plant-Type Tuner monster that can Special Summon itself from your Graveyard (once per duel) by Banishing another Plant-Type monster in your Graveyard and adding its Level to that of "Spore".
  • Tuningware: "Tuningware" is a Level 1 monster that can count as a Level 2 monster for a Synchro Summon as well as allowing you to draw a card when it's sent to the Graveyard for a Synchro Summon. "Tuningware" is most commonly used with "Junk Synchron" and "Machine Duplication" in order to gain lots of advantage.

Spells

  • De-Synchro: "De-Synchro" is used in conjunction with "Tuningware", "Junk Synchron", and "Machine Duplication" to gain massive amounts of advantage (while Synchro Summoning "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier" and "Junk Destroyer" to gain more advantage).
  • Machine Duplication: "Machine Duplication" Special Summons as many copies of a Machine-Type monster with 500 or less ATK as possible from your Deck. It's used with "Tuningware" to gain a lot of advantage.
  • One for One: "One for One" Special Summons any Level 1 monster from your Deck, such as "Glow-Up Bulb" or "Spore".
  • Reinforcement of the Army: "Reinforcement of the Army" is a Normal Spell Card that searches your deck for any Level 4 or lower Warrior-Type monster.
  • Scapegoat: "Scapegoat" is a Quick-Play Spell Card that creates four Level 1 tokens which can defend you and be used for a Synchro Summon.
  • The Warrior Returning Alive: "The Warrior Returning Alive" returns a Warrior-Type monster from your Graveyard to your hand. You can return "Junk Synchron" to use in a Synchro Summon.

Variants

Junk-Doppel Plants

Junk-Doppel Plants is a variant of the popular Plant Synchro Deck that uses "Junk Synchron" and "Doppelwarrior".

Quickdraw/Junk Synchron Deck

Quickdraw/Junk Synchron Decks make use of "Junk Synchron", "Quickdraw Synchron", "Doppelwarrior", and, to a lesser extent, "Synchron Explorer".

Tuningware Draw OTK Deck

The Tuningware Draw OTK Deck uses "Tuningware" and "Machine Duplication" with "De-Synchro" in order to Synchro Summon a few times in a turn and draw many cards, followed up by a "Magical Explosion", "Wall of Revealing Light", and "Life Equalizer" for game.

Tuningware Synchro Deck

The Tuningware Synchro Deck uses "Machine Duplication", "De-Synchro", and "Tuningware" along with "Junk Synchron" in order to draw a lot of cards off a chain of
