SummaryEdit

Using the combined power of "Lava Battleguard" and "Swamp Battleguard", Joey has just destroyed Rex's ultra-rare "Serpent Night Dragon". Rex is forced to go on the defensive, Setting a monster, which Joey uses "Lava Battleguard" to attack and destroy. The gang cheers him on, with Tristan telling him to show Rex the power of their friendship. However, Rex mocks this idea, saying that his strongest card is still waiting in his Deck. (In the dub, Tristan says that since Rex's strongest monster is destroyed, the rest should be easy.)

Rex draws and declares that his most powerful card has arrived. He Summons "Red-Eyes Black Dragon", which even Mai is shocked to see that Rex has. Rex says that Joey should feel proud to lose to "Red-Eyes". Yugi says that "Red-Eyes" is a legendary rare card that rivals the power of even "Blue-Eyes White Dragon". Rex says that it took all his savings to get "Red-Eyes", and declares he's not done - he Equips "Dragon Nails" onto "Red-Eyes", increasing its ATK to a monstrous 3000. "Red-Eyes" attacks with "Black Fireball", destroying both "Battleguards" at once and dropping Joey's Life Points down to 235. Téa asks Yugi if there's any way Joey can win now, and Yugi thinks there's only one possible way - but he promised not to give Joey any advice.

Joey thinks that there's no way he can win, but is kept up by some words of encouragement from the gang. He draws. Rex is about to taunt Joey some more, but then he sees Joey's "Time Wizard" still face-down on Joey's field. He thinks that it's a wild and powerful card, but that Joey doesn't know how to use it. Mai yells at Rex from the sidelines to finish Joey off, and Rex remembers that Joey used "Time Wizard" to beat Mai. He thinks that if he gets "Time Wizard" for himself, there's no way he can lose. Rex calls out to Joey, proposing an ante: both Duelists will wager the cards they currently have on the field on the outcome of the match - Rex's "Red-Eyes" and Joey's "Time Wizard". This causes Joey to remember that he still has "Time Wizard" in the first place. Mai protests, and she and Rex get into an argument. Joey thinks that if Rex is willing to ante up "Red-Eyes", then "Time Wizard" must be a powerful card too. He agrees to the ante, to Mai's shock and Rex's excitement.

Joey says that before Rex can take "Time Wizard", he'll use it. He flips over "Time Wizard" and its effect activates. Mai panics and says that if Rex had just kept his mouth shut, this wouldn't be happening. Rex says that since the odds of "Time Magic" activating are one in two, it's not over yet. A wheel appears on the wand "Time Wizard" is holding, and Joey declares "Time Roulette". Yugi says that "Time Magic" will activate if Joey succeeds, but failure means self-destruction. The needle slows down and stops, and lands on a crown - "Time Magic" has succeeded. A portal opens over the Duel Arena, and strong winds begin to blow. Millions of years pass in an instant, and when "Time Magic" ends, "Red-Eyes" has become fossilized. The skeletal head of "Red-Eyes" cracks and falls off, and the monster is destroyed in a cloud of dust. The effect damage from "Time Magic" reduces Rex's Life Points to 0, and Joey wins the Duel.

Joey declares that now Rex has to give him both his Star Chips and his "Red-Eyes". He exits the podium, and rushes to the gang - but Tristan punches him, causing him to fall down. He says that he feels much better now, and that's what Joey gets for making him worry. They get into an argument, and Téa tells Yugi to let them go - that's how they communicate.

Later on, night has fallen. Joey says that no one is going to Duel at night, and Yugi suggests the gang finds a place to sleep outside. Suddenly, the bushes next to the group shudder and a pair of bright red eyes glow.

The gang sets up camp below a tree, but once again, Joey and Tristan are starving. Joey says that he'd like some potato chips, rather than Star Chips. (In the dub, Tristan tells a ghost story that ends with someone finding 20 pepperoni pizzas.) Joey sees a mushroom and goes to eat it, but Tristan restrains him, saying it's definitely poisonous. Suddenly, Mai appears before the group and tells them that they look like they're starving. She taunts the gang by munching on a chocolate bar, and asks Joey if he wants to trade his Star Chips for it. Joey appears to contemplate it for a moment but shakes it off, and Mai says she never thought Joey would fall that far. Mai says they should put aside their differences for the night. Joey is distrustful, but quickly realizes Mai is the gang's only source of food, and promptly falls in line.

Mai lays out a large array of food as well as an unpitched tent. She tells Yugi and Téa to do the cooking, and Tristan and Joey to fetch water. (In the dub, Yugi alone is asked to fetch firewood, which he does of his own accord in the original.) Joey is annoyed by this, but Tristan reminds him that they're getting food out of this. Mai and Téa are left alone at the camp, and Mai tells Téa that she can use Mai's shower, a necessity that only women can understand. Téa uses the shower, while Mai stands guard. (In the dub, Mai tells Téa that hanging out with the gang is no reason to have to smell like them.)

Téa, in the shower, asks Mai why she came to Duelist Kingdom. Mai sees a big ship in the distance and has a flashback. She worked as a casino dealer on a cruise ship, playing cards with the wealthy, who used their money and power to show off. This caused Mai to become sick of people. (This flashback scene is completely removed from the dub, and instead Mai just jokes about Joey's cooking.) She turns the question back on Téa and asks why they're all there together, to which Téa responds it's because they're friends. Mai says that when she looks at the gang, she feels like she remembers something that she lost. Suddenly, Téa hears a rustling in the bushes and yelps, which causes Mai to burst into the shower, but she sees nothing. Joey and Tristan take advantage of Mai's momentary absence to try to peek at the shower, which results in Mai punching them both. (This is removed from the dub as well.)

The meal is completed, and everyone digs in. Yugi says that since Mai already has eight Star Chips, she might be first into the castle. Mai says that someday, she wants to battle Yugi - they may be friends tonight, but tomorrow they'll be enemies. She announces that she's finished eating and that she's going to go get some fresh air. Joey says that there's nothing charming about her.

Mai stands on a hill overlooking the ocean and thinks that it's not like her to reminisce about the past. (In the dub, she thinks she's too soft for sitting down and being friendly with the gang, however nice they may be.) Suddenly, a large man grabs her by the mouth and drags her into the bushes.

Back at the campfire, Joey is getting tired. Téa thinks they should go check on Mai, but Joey says to leave her be, as she does whatever she pleases. Suddenly, the bushes rustle behind Téa again. Joey and Tristan implore whoever is in there to come out, and out of the bushes steps Bakura. Téa feels vindicated in that she wasn't hallucinating the last two times she saw him. Bakura says he's here for the same reason as everyone else, and Joey says it's great that they have more support now.

Sitting around the campfire, Joey learns that everyone brought their cards, and thinks it's great that everyone on the island is putting their hearts into their cards. (In the dub, Joey says that sometimes when he Duels, he feels like it's him on the field, fighting.) Bakura asks Joey what his favorite card is, and Joey says it's the "Flame Swordsman". Tristan says his is the "Cyber Commander", and both Joey and Tristan strike poses. Téa says it's hilarious, but Yugi urges Téa to pick a card for herself, and she picks the "Magician of Faith", which Joey thinks looks ugly. Bakura asks Yugi what his card is, and Yugi picks the "Dark Magician". Yugi talks about the Heart of the Cards, and how you can't truly Duel until your heart is in your cards. Yugi asks Bakura what his favorite card is, and Bakura says it's "Change of Heart". Joey says that it's a weird card to like (weird picture in the dub).

Bakura asks Yugi if they could have a Duel right then, for no stakes. Yugi says that it would be nice to have a casual Duel after all the day's serious battles. Bakura proposes that everyone add their favorite cards to Yugi's deck, and the gang agrees, saying that the new deck will be original and have everyone's hearts in it. Bakura smirks.

The Duelists shuffle their decks, with Joey telling Bakura he thinks Yugi will win, but to try his best. Suddenly, Bakura's hair grows spikier and a bell sound rings throughout the area, confusing the gang. (In the dub, Bakura instead says there's something he wants to share with everyone, and especially with Yugi.) Bakura places his hands near his chest, and the Millennium Ring appears around his neck - he's transformed into Yami Bakura. The world around them disappears, replaced by the Shadow Realm, and Yugi cries out that this is a Shadow Game. The Millennium Ring glows, and the souls of Yugi, Joey, Tristan and Téa are separated from their bodies, infused into Yugi's deck. The four of them fall to the ground, lifeless. Yami Bakura says that this was too easy, and walks over to take the Millennium Puzzle from Yugi's neck. Just as he's about to touch it, the Puzzle glows, and Yami Yugi awakens and opens his eyes. He declares that he'll face Bakura in this Shadow Game, and Bakura says that the other Yugi has finally shown up. The two prepare for a Shadow Game.

Featured Duel: Joey Wheeler vs. Rex RaptorEdit

Duel continues from the previous episode.

Joey has 1595 LP remaining and controls "Swamp Battleguard" (1800 → 2840/1500 → 2450) and "Lava Battleguard" (1550 → 2515/1800 → 2840), both in Attack Position, and 1 Set card ("Time Wizard").
Rex has 840 LP remaining and controls no monsters or Set cards.

Turn 18: Rex
Rex Sets a monster.

Turn 19: Joey
"Lava Battleguard" attacks and destroys Rex's Set "Trakodon" (1300 → 1690/800 → 1040).

Turn 20: Rex
Rex draws "Red-Eyes B. Dragon" and subsequently Normal Summons it (2400/2000) in Attack Position. He then activates "Dragon Nails", equipping it to "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" and increasing its ATK by 600 ("Red-Eyes Black Dragon": 2400 → 3000/2000). "Red-Eyes" attacks and destroys "Swamp Battleguard" and "Lava Battleguard" (Joey 1595 → 235). At this point, Rex and Joey agree to ante up their "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" and "Time Wizard" respectively.

Turn 21: Joey
Joey draws. He then Flip Summons "Time Wizard" (500/400) in Attack Position. Joey then activates the effect of "Time Wizard" and succeeds, so its effect destroys "Red-Eyes Black Dragon", then because it was destroyed by a card effect Rex takes damage equal to half the ATK of "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" (Rex 840 → 0).

AftermathEdit

Joey receives "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" from Rex as per their bet. (In the English dub, he also receives "Dragon Nails".)

Differences in adaptationsEdit

  • When Joey crashes into Tristan, the word "BOM" and stars appears. "BOM" is erased from the dub.
  • The scene when Joey gets up after being punched by Tristan is cut out from the dub.
  • In the original, Tristan punched Joey, in the dub he shoved him, this is evident by the dialogue when Joey notes on Tristan knocking him to the ground.
  • The text on Mai's food and supplies are erased in the dub.
  • The words "Sun Shower II" are erased from the dub.
  • Cut from the US version is a bit where Mai notices an ocean liner passing by.
  • Cut from the dub: Mai recalling she used to work in a casino on board.
  • Cut out of the US version is a bit where Anzu cowers in the shower from a new commotion, while Yugi holds Honda and Jounouchi back by their coattails as they try to rush to Anzu's aid. Jounouchi then asks if they can come in. Another "BOM!" appears as Mai clobbers both Jounouchi and Honda. Mai then tells them they cannot.
  • The Pepsi logo is changed to a red ball in the dub.
  • At the end of the episode when Yami Yugi appears, the transformation sequence is cut.

ErrorsEdit

  • The words on the duel mat have been removed in the US version, though they can be briefly seen when the group collapses after having their souls removed.
  • In a far-away scene showing the front of Bakura, as he says "before we start", he's already wearing the Millennium Ring, but then it disappears in another scene and Bakura uses magic to make it appear.

TriviaEdit

  • When "Red-Eyes" equipped with "Dragon Nails" destroys both "Battleguard" monsters, it is unclear how the damage to Joey was decided. Had it simply been that both of their ATK points were deducted from "Red-Eyes"', the damage would have been 645 (3000 - Swamp's 2840 = 160, 3000 - Lava's 2515 = 485). The damage shown was 1360 and the only combination of the ATK points of "Battleguard" (with or without any power boosts) that adds up to that is if you take the 160 damage from Swamp's fully boosted 2840 and add 1200 from Swamp's original 1800. Of course, this is only likely the case if there was an error.

NotesEdit

  1. This card belong to Tristan, but Joey borrows it.
  2. This card belongs to Rex, but it was given to Joey after Rex was defeated.
