Forum:Cards that target.

Is there really ANY point of using a card that targets instead of some other card that doesnt target and essentially does the same thing/better? Example:3 Lightning Vortex is way better than 3 Tribute to the Doomed. Shoukatsuryou 07:17, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

LV doesn't destroy face-down monsters, Tribute does. Danny Lilithborne 20:01, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Examples.

  • Yes there is in fact. For example cards that destroy one monster on oponents side of the field...For example: Fissure, Smashing ground, and Soul taker.

Now Fissure and smashing are obviously better, however say your opponent has say...dark armed dragon on the field and a Krebons. And all you have is a fissure, you want to get rid of the Dark armed, but fissure wont it it, and you cannot attack krebons since it will negate the attack. This is where a Targeting card would be more handy, soul taker does give your opponent 1k LP but in a game that is almost no gain due to direct attacks. Soul taker allows you to CHOOSE which monster you get rid of. I understand there are very few examples where a card that targets with a similar effect is better than a card that doesn't target, but soul Taker is one of those in my opinion.

  • Another example might be shrink vs. Mirror wall. Mirror wall does not target, however its a trap and takes time to set. Leaving it vunerable to MST. Two, Shrink is chainable, where mirror wall isn't so much. So if they play heavy storm first main phase you are screwed with mirror wall.--Takuma. 07:35, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

I understand the Mirror Wall example, however, im pretty sure that a card that destroys ALL defense monsters (im not sure if there is one thats a spell card, really) is far better than a card that destroys one defense monster. Also, there are several cards that protect against targeting cards, so...

Another Example:Mirror Force > Sakuretsu Armor Shoukatsuryou 07:55, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

  • Well...there is no spell card that destroys all def cards. But you have to consider the card's cost as well, For example Fissure destroys one card. No cost. While Lightning vortex has a cost, discard a card. Lightning vortex usually puts you at a disadvantage when using it because you lose another card other than lightning.
  • In some situations cards that target do work better than cards with similar effects, as in the example with Soul taker, Fissure, and Smashing ground.
  • Also mirror force and Sakuretsu both do not target.--Takuma. 19:07, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

the benefits of precision

  • I've got a scenario for you. A real-life one, in fact. I'm playing my burn deck, my little brother is using his fusion-based deck. He's got the materials for Master of Oz in his hand. I have Spirit Reaper and three face-down monsters on my side of the field. I have 1700 life points; he has 2900. he really just wants to take out my annoying Spirit Reaper so that he can attack my other monsters, but the only monster-destroying card in his hand is Dark Hole. He plays Dark Hole, planning on fusion-summoning Oz after clearing the field. Unfortunately for him, he takes out my three face-down Mecha-Dog Marrons. He takes 3000 damage; I take none. the irony is that if he had used a card like Raigeki Break or Tribute to the Doomed, he could have picked off my Spirit Reaper and easily killed me.
  • another simpler situation is if I special-summon Lava Golem to my opponent's side of the field and equip it with Flint. I could use Lightning Vortex to take out any other monsters my opponent controlled, but that would also take out the immobilized Lava Golem AND would likely force me to flint my own monster. in this case, I'd rather be able to target and pick off my opponent's monsters separately, instead of simply wiping their field.
