Forum:Dragon Deck Dilema: What kind is best?

Alrighty people! time for another deck. i'd love to make a nice dragon deck, but first things first: Which dragon should i center on? I'm pretty sure there are two very good dragons to center on: the Armed Dragons and Red Eyes B. Dragon (so don't give the whole Don't use Blue Eyes speach, ok?). The problem is simply choosing one. Is there anything beside "Which one do i think is cooler?" dictating which one i should choose? And if so, why and what? Help!

Whoops, sorry on the whole slide thing in the intro; i'm still getting used to the typing format on the website.

  • Please sign your post with 4 tildes (~). The best type of dragon deck is Hopeless Dragon, by far. Just google it or watch a youtube clip. It's incredible. --Tantara (talk) 00:43, October 11, 2009 (UTC)

I'll check it out and there are no ~'s because i didn't edit; i just added a post.

Alrighty, so a Hopeless Dragon deck looks cool with the whole DARK concept, but youtube will only tell me so much. So with that said, what's the exact concept in detail?

The idea is to quickly summon Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon, and proceed to Special Summon heavy-hitting Dragons like White Night Dragon Dark Horus, among other powerful Dragons. Because REDMD can also look in the Grave, Trade-In along with Allure of Darkness is abused as draw power cards. --Gadjiltron 06:55, October 11, 2009 (UTC)

Sounds awesome, but I'm not sure it sounds all too... "cheap." How much do these things usually cost?

Solarstar Dragon 14:57, October 11, 2009 (UTC)

In any event, i presume the hopeless deck will a cost me a small fortune which i don't have. So until someone tells me how much HDD costs, i think i'd like to focus on a LV Dragon deck starring the Armed Dragons as well as Horus. I've heard that this combo can make for a very good Horus Lockdown deck that not only stops Spell and Traps, but also deals with your opponents monsters easily.Solarstar Dragon 19:30, October 11, 2009 (UTC)

Well, I consider myself to be an expert on Dragons. I've run both Armed Dragon and Horus lockdown decks before, and I can say both are very good. However, merging them together may be a bit complicated. It's not impossible, but which do you want to focus on more? The Horus Lockdown or both of the level dragons? Lordofdecoydragons 11:06, October 12, 2009 (UTC)

I'm gonna have to say both. It makes things a bit more adaptable it you have an awesome spell stopper like horus AND something to deal with monsters like the Armed Dragons. i realize it is more complicated, but i believe if we can pull it off, it will make for a unique, unexpected, hard to stop deck.

Solarstar Dragon 17:02, October 12, 2009 (UTC)

I have to say, the idea seems adaptable. However, both Horus and the Armed Dragons have two things in common. First, as with any LV series, most of the high level monsters are next to useless in your hand, since they can be special summoned from the deck, so Lighten the Load or Good Goblin Housekeeping might come in handy. Seconed, they are both weak to monster effects, so you might want Divine Wrath in threes. One other thing I noticed is that while Horus LV6 is immune to spell cards, you can tribute him for Level Up!, so think about maxing those too. Another thing, despite not being a dragon, Gilasaurus works very well with the level dragons. You can Special Summon him and maybe put a monster on your opponent's field at the same time! Giving your opponent free summons may not sound good at first, but since both of the "middle level" dragons need monsters to destroy to level up, combined with the fact that you can still tribute summon LV5 or LV6 in the same turn may make him useful. This is just what I came up with now. If you want, I could try coming up with an example decklist. Lordofdecoydragons 21:26, October 12, 2009 (UTC)

All good to know, and, yeah, if you don't mind the effort, i'd love an example decklist. I'll try and make one as well and we'll see if were on the same, exact page.

Possible and highly effective

I happen to be running a Armed Horus deck right now and it runs really effectivally. The problem is you have to have reliable tribute fodder for the lv5 and lv6 versions of the monsters.

This is what I have

These are two decks that I came up with. The first one is the that I actually tested, and it does rather well. The seconed one is just something I thought of to abuse the fact that it can Synchro Summon anything between levels 5 and 10. Also, the Synchros in the seconed one are all just ideas of good Synchro Monsters, not the bare minimum. Hope this helps you with your deck! 64.83.207.245 11:51, October 13, 2009 (UTC)

Hello my name is Bryan Taylor from Philadelphia, pa. Just to make a comment I have never lost to another Hopeless Dragon Deck, but i do play REDMD myself. My deck is 100% Dragons and is der effective against them. Hopeless is a RAW ATTACK Deck Designed to scare people. Simple as that. Yes there are alot of other things it can do but against strategy I dont think so. I would say that the Dragon Deck that I have is the best, however i'am very protective of my idea so i have failed to give it a youtube video. There are some good choice when it comes to high level dragons such as Tyrant for BW's, GB, and yes even LS, LaDD for BW's, and GB, and REDMD to respawn the monsters if they fall in battle. The game now is who can do what and change at any given moment rather then I stop you from doing this for a while. Dragons are dangerous, and they have come along way as a monster type with just Big monsters and no way to summon them. Here is my sample Dragon Deck that I created recently:

Monster Cards-21

  1. 3x Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon
  2. 3x White Night Dragon
  3. 3x masked dragon
  4. 2x debris dragon
  5. 2x magna drago
  6. 2x exploder dragon
  7. 3x spear dragon
  8. 1x Koa'ki Meiru Drago
  9. 1x Strong Wind Dragon
  10. 1x Prime Material Dragon

Spells-10

  1. 2x Stamping Destruction
  2. 1x Mystical Space Typhoon
  3. 1x Heavy Storm
  4. 2x Dragon's Mirror
  5. 1x Brain Control
  6. 1x Future Fusion
  7. 2x Book of Moon

Traps-11

  1. 3x Threatening Roar
  2. 2x Bottomless Traphole
  3. 1x Torrential
  4. 1x Trap DustShoot
  5. 3x Reckless Greed
  6. 1x Call of the Haunted

Possible Side Deck-7/8

  1. 3x Counter Dragon (Sorry cant remember his name, but its the dragon that works with counter traps)
  2. 2-3x Dark Bribes
  3. 1 Solemn Judgement
  4. 1 Koa'ki Meiru Drago

Possible Extra Deck-19 (I'm not limiting it to 15 nor am I including non-dragon synchro monsters)

  1. 3x FGD
  2. 2x Trident Dragion
  3. 2x Red Dragon Archfiend
  4. 2x Light End Dragon
  5. 2x Stardust Dragon
  6. 1x Black Rose Dragon
  7. 2x Exploder Dragonwing
  8. 2x Ancient Fairy Dragon
  9. 3x Iron Chain Dragon

All very good suggestions; you guys are lending me an arm when i asked for a hand!(ugh, i gotta stop telling jokes to people online...). Based on all this, i think this is kinda the basis for my deck. Armed Dragon LV3 x 2, Armed Dragon LV5 x 3, Armed Dragon LV8 x 2, Armed Dragon LV10 x 1, HorusTBFD Lv6 x 2, HorusTBFD Lv6 x 3, HorusTBFD Lv8 x 2 forgot rest, hold on for next post...Solarstar Dragon 23:06, October 13, 2009 (UTC)

Magna Draco x 3, Masked Dragon x 2, Gilasaurus x 2, Blizzard Dragon x 2, Cyber Dragon x 1(maybe), Lighten the Load x 1, Good Goblin Housekeeping x 2, Divine Wrath x 2, Level Up! x 3, Level Modulation x 1, Level Down!? x 1(for emergency card targeting), Call of the Haunted x 1, Shrink x 2. Solarstar Dragon 23:14, October 13, 2009 (UTC)

Side: Stardust Dragon x 2, Red Dragon Archfiend x 2, Trident Dragon x 2, Exploder Dragonwing x 2. Solarstar Dragon 23:18, October 13, 2009 (UTC)

BTW, that makes a total of 37 cards in the main deck.

Solarstar Dragon 23:27, October 13, 2009 (UTC)(ARGH!)

It looks good so far, but Level Modulation just seems a bit iffy to me. It has some uses, but in my experiences it hasn't helped that much, and my opponent usually gets some good draws from it. If you want to get the high LV monsters out of your graveyard, I strongly sugguest Pot of Avarice. Level monster decks tend to fill the graveyard quickly, and the extra 2 cards you draw might end up helping you just as much. You can get it (and shrink, if your missing one) in the Zombie World structure deck. Also, would you mind if I organized your decklist a little? Lordofdecoydragons 23:40, October 13, 2009 (UTC)

Experiance with LV mod

Its true that allowing your oppenent to draw 2 cards can be devasting. Thats why I only play Lv Mod when I am sure of victory within the turn OR if I am summoning a monster that would extremanly limit my oppenents options and make cards he draw dead draws like Silent Swordsman lv7, Horus the Black Flame Dragon lv8 and to a lesser degree Silent Magician lv8. Steelfallenangel 12:04, October 14, 2009 (UTC)

Lordofdecoydragons, yeah, sure revise it to your heart's content! I'll be sure to add 2 Pot of Avairice (spelled it wrong, i know). Still, that puts me at 39 cards, so all suggestions are welcome.Solarstar Dragon 22:34, October 14, 2009 (UTC)

Actually, with Cyber Dragon its 40 cards. Should i keep him?

Solarstar Dragon 22:36, October 14, 2009 (UTC)

Oh yes, by all means, keep Cyber Dragon. Anyway, I may have missed some stuff, but i belive this is how your deck looks right now.

Currently, you have 40 cards. 25 monsters, 10 spells, and 5 traps. Normally I would say that its a little too many monsters, but that might actually work better. The only thing I can think of for the monsters is that you might want to take out a Magna Drago and add a third Masked Dragon. However, I can tell you that you are going to run out of a hand very quickly, Armed Dragons just usually do that. You could replace Level Modulation, or at least Level Down!?, with two copies of Super Rejuvenation to help with the hand problems. Other than that, this looks like a very strong Level Dragon deck. Congrats! Lordofdecoydragons 23:34, October 14, 2009 (UTC)

OK... I see a few errors with the deck. Level dragons move monsters out of the deck very fast. With that you need to run 2x Dragons Mirror. I say this because according to the current format no monster that is such a boss as Horus 8 will stay on the field for too long. You will want to kill your oppponent as fast as possible and its very logicial to have 3 masked dragons in stead of 2. They search out the lower level monsters that you need and they can set up for synchro summons or become requirements for dragons mirror.--King Bahamut 16:28, October 15, 2009 (UTC)

-1 Magna Draco, +1 Masked Dragon, but I'm afraid i don't see a reason for Dragon's Mirror seeing as how i don't have any fusions. Also, +2 Super Rejuvination. That makes 42, if I'm not mistaken.

Okay, I updated the decklist to reflect your changes. As for the fact that your deck is currently 42 cards, sometimes there's nothing wrong with that. I've had some very successful decks that were above the minimum. It's not really that more is bad, it's just what works for you, and with all the searching and draw power this deck has, 42 cards could be just right for this deck. But, if you really want exactly 40 cards, my advice is duel a lot with it, and take out what just doesn't help you very often. Hope this helps Lordofdecoydragons 03:01, October 16, 2009 (UTC)

Should i perhaps add the staple of the Horus Lockdown, Royal Decree?

You know, that wouldn't be a bad idea. I mean, you've only have 5 other traps in the entire deck, and you could probably make room by taking out a Good Goblin Housekeeping or two. I know the Good Goblin Housekeepings was my idea in the first place, but you also have Lighten the Load, and only four cards that you really want at the bottom of your deck. If you want, go for Royal Decree.

wonder why nobodys talking about anti-dragon deck? the dragon slayers? <colour man>

ok, -2 Good Goblin housekeeping, +2 Royal Decree. Solarstar Dragon 22:04, October 20, 2009 (UTC)
