Forum:Kalut Damage Step or Battle Step?

From Yugipedia

Alright, I was in a duel recently where I had my opponent argue that the effect of Kalut - The Moon Shadow begins at the Damage Step and does NOT prevent my monster from being destroyed. That if I engage in battle, that the ATK only goes up during Damage Calculation. So my monster in turn would be destroyed as well and I lose life points as well, from the original difference? I tried to argue that the effect states when a "Blackwing monster attacks or is attacked" but got gained nothing except for more questioning. Hopefully I can get this question answered soon because now everyone I've been facing is using that against me. I hope they're not right because that's not the way I've read the effect of Kalut. Thanks for your time and patience.

Could someone please answer this question for me? Darkwings50 20:52, January 31, 2010 (UTC)

  • Your opponent is correct, your monster is destroyed, and you take damage based on their new attack. Same way as Honest~-82.11.158.0 21:23, January 31, 2010 (UTC)

Clearing It Up

Okay I'm make this a bit clearer with an Example.

I have Bora The Spear and a Shura on my side of the field and he has a Power Tool Dragon with no equips on. I attack his Power Tool Dragon...

Now. Can I discard "Kalut" to have my Blackwing Monster gain that ATK Bonus then? Or does it only gain the ATK after the main battle? This is what has confused me. Because Kalut states this, "When a "Blackwing" monster you control attacks or is attacked, you can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard during the Damage Step to have that monster gain 1400 ATK until the End Phase."

So does my Blackwing monster get that ATK Bonus at the beginning of the Battle, or only during Damage Step? In that case. If it's only the damage step...isn't my Blackwing destroyed as well and I take the original difference to my Life Points?

  • You seem to have misunderstood the damage step (Breakdown of the Battle Phase-with notes to honest), Bascily, you drop Kalut during substep 4, and destrcution is resolved during substep 7, so the powertool dragon dies & you take no dmg~-Resk 23:23, January 31, 2010 (UTC)
I didn't see why your monster has to be destroy. You see, Blackwing - Bora the Spear and Blackwing - Shura the Blue Flame both have an ATK of 1700 and 1800. Even if you activate one Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow you'll get either 3100 or 3200 ATK and your opponent monster ATK obviously lower than you ( Power Tool Dragon ). So you opponent monster will be destroy ( not yours! ) after Damage Calculation.
Take note that Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow effect activate during Damage Step (like Honest) and the target Blackwings ATK will remain until the End Phase. You, sir, need to learn more about Battle Step ruling because I think you misunderstood something. Actually Damage Calculation are the last thing solve during battle so anything happen before that will result in winning or losing of your monster... I thank you all for your help. However. If you read my FIRST ARTICLE. It is my Opponents whom are misunderstanding the damage step. I attempted to explain to them why Kalut would give the Bonus ATK BEFORE the actual Battle begins. Now that I have legit response to them, I can better explain this to them. I didn't get it either...because the original oppenent that challenged this Ruling plays a Fairy/Machine deck (Mostly Light monsters) so he uses Honest. I tried to get him to understand it's the same thing...but he wouldn't listen to reason. Once again thank you. Darkwings50 04:33, February 1, 2010 (UTC)
