Forum:Need help updating my first-gen deck to current Yugioh

Sorry if I'm using the forum wrong, I just joined a few minutes ago. But I have a deck consisting of only first generation Yugioh cards. I've been building my deck for competitions and realized the harsh truth that I needed to update my deck to fit current Yugioh. Problem is, I have no idea what I'm doing. I try to watch the anime, but I know the cards are not exactly the same as they are on the actual card, and frankly, I'm not too fond of the new animes. I just need some explaining on a few things. Clarification of Xyz's, Pendulum monsters, and anything else I may have missed. I have a dragon deck and wish to continue that way. Thanks — This unsigned comment was made by Rafapex (talkcontribs) 06:26, June 6, 2015‎

Don't forget to sign your posts with four of those squiggly things.
Anyway, if you want to learn more about the game these days, this wiki and the online rulebook are the best places to start. Dragons you say? Mate, you just missed the two year-long age of the Dragon Rulers. These days...I'm not entirely sure what the best dragon deck is, but the game as supercharged itself in power and speed. You will likely need a lot of new cards, but it depends on who you play with. Don't forget to check the current Forbidden and Limited list either, and note that some cards on it are receiving erattas - wording changes.
Not fond of the new anime huh? I'd suggest that you try the first ten episodes of Arc-V and see what you think. Despite the lack of people adding post-airing content for it, it's an excellent series. Sanokal K-T (talkcontribs) 09:35, June 6, 2015 (UTC)

Tech a Meklord Emperor Wisel. Helps out a lot for me. Watch a vid on playing. And make sure to watch 5D's and Arc-V please. -Signer, the person writing a Barian Primo fanfiction

Xyz Monsters are the black cards you see, stored in the Extra Deck (formerly Fusion Deck). There are super simple: Instead of Levels (stars), they have ranks. You summon an Xyz Monster by using 2 Monsters on the field with the same level, and it should be equal to the rank (ex: 2 level 4 Monsters = rank 4 Xyz). You summon the Xyz Monster by putting the two monsters on each other, and then the Xyz monster on top. From there, read the card's text and whenever you see "Xyz material", know that it's the cards underneath. You "detach" by sending the materials to the Graveyard.

Pendulum Monsters: First know that each player now has 2 "Pendulum Zones", the cards put there are considered Spells, so you can destroy them by cards like "Mystical Space Typhoon"/"Heavy Storm". Now, Pendulum Monsters can either be treated as Monsters or Spells. If you want to treat it as a Monster, summon it. If you want to treat it as a Spell, place it in one of the 2 Pendulum Zones. Now, you see the red and blue gems on Pendulum cards? These represent the card's Pendulum Scale. If you have 2 Pendulum Monsters in your Pendulum Zones, you can special summon any Monster from your hand with a level between the 2 card's Pendulum Scale (ex: you have one monster with a Scale of 3, and another with a scale of 8, so you can Special Summon Sonsters whose levels are 4, 5, 6 and 7). When Pendulum Monsters are destroyed, they are sent to the Extra Deck, and from there they can be Pendulum Summoned just like Monsters in your hand.

The first thing you should know, is that even the 1st Generation Cards can be powerful with 2 things: Just a couple of Rank 4 Xyz Monsters, and a few ways to special summon. Afterwards, remove all monsters that are higher than level 4, just to get started. Once you get the hang of it, compensate different strategies and combos, and you might be able to add a high level monster to the deck AND make it consistent.
