  • Does RDA's effect that destroys defense position cards activate in the damage step, after damage calculation, or after the battle entirely? If during the damage step, then is it impossible for Stardust to negate it because it does not alter ATK? The rulings page is confusing when you hit the part on Giant Rat. Also, if I don't control any monsters besides RDA, does his effect activate during the end phase? I know it will if I have monsters, even if they attacked, but don't know about if I don't have any others. Messengerofthedark 00:01, 21 June 2009 (UTC)Messengerofthedark
  • ""Red Dragon Archfiend's" effect activates after damage calculation in the Damage Step, before the effects of flipped Flip Effect Monsters or the effects of cards like "D.D. Warrior" activate."

So it sounds like the effect activates after you decide which monsters would be destroyed by battle. I'm not sure if that helps. On the last part though, I believe the effect does activate (RDA's second ability) but since RDA won't destroy himself and no other monsters exist, nothing happens. --Bluedog (Talk) 00:25, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

I suggest you read Breakdown of the Battle Phase.
Using the TCG version, the effect of "Red Dragon Archfiend" activates during Sub-Step 5. This is during the Damage Step and after Damage Calculation. This is before Flip Effects (Sub-Step 6) and before "when sent to the Graveyard" effects like "Giant Rat" (Sub-Step 7)
"Stardust Dragon" can be used to negate this effect and destroy "Red Dragon Archfiend" because the effect of "Stardust Dragon" can be activated during the Damage Step. During the Damage Step, (amongst other things) you can activate a monster's Quick Effect which negates activations, like the effect of "Stardust Dragon".
(Note that if "Stardust Dragon" is destroyed by battle, then it cannot activate its effect.)
Bluedog187 is correct about the last part - the effect of "Red Dragon Archfiend" is mandatory, so it will activate even if it cannot do anything.
