Forum:Share the Pain question

Can you use Share the Pain just to remove a monster or does it have to be tributed for a reason. ie a tribute summon or a cost that requires 2 tributes can't think of an example at the moment. My opponent last night is still new to the game and attempted to tribute one of her monsters to get rid of one of my monsters and attack directly with her Gorz the Emissary of Darkness I said that I didn't think you could do that, and would like a correct ruling on it today. I have read somewhere that a tribute has to be for a reason, a cost or so on just curious as to how that plays out.

Ok a clarification then for ATEMVEGETA

I was trying to get across, do you have to tribute a monster for a reason. I understand that Soul Exchange allows you to use one of your opponents monsters instead of your monster. My question was this, my opponent has both Soul Exchange and Share the Pain in her deck, now they are there because of the amount of Tribute monsters she has in the deck. She can use Soul Exchange for the tribute of one of her 6th level monsters, I put Share the Pain in the deck so that instead of tributing two of her monsters for a 7th level she can tribute one of hers and one of her opponents.

What she did with the card, was she had Spirit Reaper and Gorz the Emissary of Darkness on the field, vs my Gigantic Cephalotus she played her Share the Pain and tributed her Spirit Reaper and my Gigantic Cephalotus to allow a direct attack with her Gorz the Emissary of Darkness my question was did she play that right, because I didn't think so. I thought that I had read somewhere that a monster can only be tributed for a cost or a Tribute Summon. She did tribute her Spirit Reaper thus fulfilling the cost of her Share the Pain but when she did that I had to tribute my card as well. I guess what I am trying to ask is can she use Share the Pain to get rid of a monster on my field or does she have to use it for something, ie a Tribute summon such as Gorz

I hope I clarified it though Deux Ex Machina may have already answered that.

There are other reasons you can Tribute monsters other than for Tribute Summons. For example, "Exiled Force" and "Stardust Dragon" Tribute themselves for their own effects, and cards like "Share the Pain" Tribute monsters as part of its effect - not for any other reason. You can't Tribute "Exiled Force" for a Tribute Summon and still gets its effect, for example. Also, "Mask of Restrict" prevents Tributing for any reason. Danny Lilithborne 20:40, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Ok. The move your friend did was legal, as in it was a good play from her. Now to answer and clear things up about the wording and intention of "Share the Pain". "Share the Pain" is a way of "destroying" a monster on both sides of the field. Now I know what you are going to say "it says "tribute" not "destroy"" well the reason "Share the Pain" has been worded like that is because there are cards that activate when they are destroyed or when targeted and this cards doesn't target or destroy so it gets around both of them. You can just think of this card as an anti-meta way of taking care of big cards like "Stardust Dragon" or "Tytannial, Princess of Camellias" without them getting to use their effects.

I hope I posted this in the right place.

EDIT Ok I don't know how you get your name and time you posted the message on the bottom of the message so I'm just going to add my name at the end here. By Mikonkun.

Just to be sure you understand, since it IS a tribute, YOU choose the monster to tribute, not your opponent.

Very Good play for her then

Can you also use the tributes your own and your opponents when you play Share the Pain for the tribute summon of a 7th level monster then. Or can it only be used to get rid of two monsters on the field.

Just a note, I think you're thinking of the rule that you can't Tribute a monster for no reason - for example, if you control "Lava Golem", you can't say "I don't like him, I'm going to Tribute him to get him off my field". There has to be a reason.
For "Share the Pain", you are Tributing your monster as a cost to activate "Share the Pain", and your opponent's monster is Tributed by the effect of "Share the Pain". There is a reason here, so it is legal.
Also, when you activate "Share the Pain", your opponent selects which of her monsters to Tribute.
