Forum:Spirit Reaper Discard Method

Hello, I posted this in the Rulings sections but I didn't get any feedback, I think I posted in the wrong section perhaps? So I'll try here:

In the end part of Spirit Reaper's effect it says "...your opponent discards 1 card randomly from his/her hand." So my question would be: What is the best possible method to have your opponent discard a card from their own hand at absolute random?

If they shuffle it themselves, they will innately know at least one card simply by human instinct, especially if there are a small amount of cards. Since they know, it is in no way random.

So would the best way be that I (without looking) shuffle their cards for them, and they randomly discard, then I (without looking) hand their cards back? Or would it be reasonable for me to just randomly choose after I inflict battle damage? Projectkrigo 22:11, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

It would indeed be better to just randomly choose by yourself after you inflict damage, but im not sure if you can do that in tournaments or not, since it does tell your opponent to discard... Shoukatsuryou 00:55, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

  • Well what I think is "Random" enough is that they shuffle the hand and I pick one at random (Since I shouldn't know what they have in their hand). If the person who has to discard chooses themselves at random they have somewhat of an idea where the cards might be since they shuffled it. However the opposing player shouldn't know anything.
  • Either that or if you have a calculator that can pick a random number between so and so let the opponent shuffle. they place the cards face down. Then the calculator picks a number between 1-whatever amount they have in their hand. And just count from left to right until you reach random number. (Too complicated but I find that if you really wanted it to be COMPLETELY random. Then that is one of the most effective ways.)--Takuma. 05:19, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Normally, I just let the opponent shuffle up the hand before I pick it. Well, it's up to the players to decide how to do something "randomly". The automated games have it easy... --Gadjiltron 02:28, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Misunderstanding?

Its funny I clicked on this I just so happen to have Spirit Reaper infront of me. Its a Rare one from PGD and says

"When this card attacks your opponent's life points directly, 1 card is randomly selected from your opponent's hand and sent to the graveyard"

Where does it say your opponent does it?

It's been errata'd. The new wording states that your opponent randomly discards. 72.73.179.107 17:00, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

  • Simple. Lay all cards face-down on the floor. Release a swarm of guinea pigs. The card that is the last to be stepped on is the chosen card.
