Forum:Spirit reaper vs blind destruction

During a match, I rolled a dice for Blind Destruction's effect. I rolled a three. Spirit Reaper's effect states; "Destroy this card when it is targeted by the effect of a spell, trap, or effect monster." Now I was about to destroy Spirit Reaper when my brother countered with Tutan Mask. That card states; "Negate the activation and the effect of a majic or trap card that specifically designates one face-up Zombie-type monster as a target and destroy it.". I get that Blind Destruction is destroyed but is Spirit Reaper as well because he is targeted by Blind Destruction's effect? — This unsigned comment was made by 70.173.103.54 (talkcontribs) 00:08, October 26, 2009

Actually, in this situation "Tutan Mask" cannot be activated, since "Blind Destruction" does not target and "Tutan Mask" can only negate effects which target. To target, you must choose what the effect will affect when you first activate the effect (that is, when the effect first starts a Chain Link). When the effect of "Blind Destruction" activates and starts a Chain Link, it does not know what it is going to effect yet, since you haven't rolled a die yet.
If you replaced "Blind Destruction" with something that targets like "Tribute to the Doomed" or "Change of Heart", then,
"Spirit Reaper" is destroyed by its own effect after a card that targets it resolves. If a Spell Card targets it, and the activation of that Spell Card is negated (such as with "Magic Jammer"), then "Spirit Reaper" is not destroyed. However, if the effect of the Spell Card was negated, such as if "Imperial Order" is active, then "Spirit Reaper" is destroyed because the Spell Card resolves (even though its effect is negated). Even if "Imperial Order" is already active on the field, you can activate a card such as "Tribute to the Doomed" designating "Spirit Reaper", and "Spirit Reaper" will be destroyed by its own effect.
"Tutan Mask" negates the activation of the Spell/Trap Card, so "Spirit Reaper" will not destroy itself.
