Forum:Sub Step

Can someone please explain all the sub steps in the damage calculation? I can't seem to find any information on it. Also, can you include a resource/link.

Also, I have heard that you can not use Stardust assault effect during sub step 4 even though the rulings on stardust says you can use its' effect during the damage step.

Stardust Assault > Honest?

"During the Damage Step, you can only activate Counter Trap Cards, or cards with effects that directly change a monster’s ATK or DEF. Also, these cards can only be activated up until the start of damage calculation." Page 34 of official rule book

Rules vs. Card Effects "If there is a discrepancy between the basic rules and a card’s effect, the card effect takes precedence. For example, a monster can only attack once per turn, but with a card effect, it is possible to attack twice." Page 44 of official rule book

Substep 4: "During Damage Calculation" "We only get one Chain with which to activate effects that are activated "during damage calculation". Only effects that are activated "during damage calculation" and effects that negate them, such as Counter Trap Cards and the effects of cards like "Herald of Orange Light" and "Light and Darkness Dragon", can be activated at this time. Effects that increase, decrease, halve, double, etc. the ATK and/or DEF of a monster cannot be activated at this time, unless they are specifically allowed to be activated "during damage calculation". The first quote from the Rulebook is the abbreviated version. During the Damage Step (before, during, and after Damage Calculation), you can activate the following optional effects:

• Effects which increases/decreases ATK/DEF (before Damage Calculation only)
• Counter Trap Cards
• Monster Quick Effects which negate activations
• Effects which specifically activate during the Damage Step
• Any card that has been given a specific ruling saying that you can activate it during the Damage Step.

The effect of "Stardust Dragon/Assault Mode" is a Quick Effect which negates activations, so it can be activated during the Damage Step.
