The Ghost of Puberty (Yami) I apologize but I placed this article on the wikia instead of forums, my mistake, someone please delete it. Anyways I believe Yami is the ghost of puberty, and as you will discover, I have evidence to back it up. I would love to hear your opinions on the topic. In the original anime Yu-Gi-Oh after Yami takes control of Yugi, a number of changes occur, several of which occur in the average human male. The changes that Yugi experiences are not strange or Egyptian, but normal. Although like many others affected, he got scared of them. These changes are known as puberty.

Evidence #1

The first of these changes is voice deepening. Voice changes to make the voice deeper often occur in puberty, and Yami's voice is definitely much deeper than that of the original Yugi. That concludes the first proof to my theory.

Evidence #2

Another change that takes place during the transformation is Yugi's height. He grows significantly during the transformation, similar to routine growth spurts found in puberty. That is the end of my second piece of evidence.

Evidence #3

My final proof is that Yugi has a small crush on Taya/Anzu and viceversa. But throughout the series Yugi has barely though and/or said anything about this crush. But when Yami is in control, and Taya/Anzu gets hurt, he immediately gets angry at whoever hurt her (if this applies) much more than he would when another friend of his gets hurt, thus proving that under his transformed form, he takes a greater interest in girls, (Anzu/Taya) thus taking more of an interest in girls in general, which is normal for males going through puberty. That is all the evidence I have so far, but I will try to get more ASAP. Wish me luck. Lance&Chainsaw (talkcontribs) 03:26, January 19, 2014 (UTC)Lance&Chainsaw

Yugi is seen as too young, "cute", and weak, even to his friends oftentimes. Beyond this, he is rather immature when it comes to girls as seen in the beginnings of the manga. Spoiler: he imagines seeing Tanya's (I believe that is the spelling of her name) panties. There. Now you know. Let the knowledge of the corrupted flow through you. Beyond this, he dislikes involving himself with actual sports, and is very timid. Meanwhile, Yami is strong, imposing, and confident of himself, to the point that he rarely feels worried. In the beginning chapters of the manga in fact, before we got tangled up in this little game called Yugioh, he would pass judgment on all who dared oppose him, not blinking an eye as he at times seriously harmed someone in a shadow game. You may have noticed this in Episode 1 of the series when he uses his powers to alter Kaiba's mental state. I do agree with you on the Tanya thing, and to add to it, Yami is seen as attractive to her, as opposed to the meek Yugi, who cannot gather the strength to confess his feelings. Overall, Yami is a confident Yugi, a mentor who can teach him how to solve his woes and combat his fears. An older brother, you could say. Maybe an older brother with supernatural powers who enjoys playing dangerous games, but whatever. But the puberty thing does work, because Yami is a reflection of what Yugi can be, a mature version. Perhaps Yugi believes that, despite his small size, he is destined to grow tall and strong? Bashfrog (talkcontribs) 02:04, August 25, 2014 (UTC)Bashfrog

Where the heck did you get Tanya from? It's either Tea (dub) or Anzu.

Not to mention, he says a lot about the crush in the original (to the point that Yami actively encourages him to date Tea).

That growth spurt rubbish is only in the anime. Read the manga, and you'll see that Dark Yugi is as tiny as Yugi in that (they both grow overall in the manga.)

Oh, and to top it off? He's not the ghost of puberty, he's the spirit of a Pharaoh who happened to look like Yugi (or Yugi happened to look like him, one or the other.)

Good lord knows where you got that theory/what you must have missed to come up with it.

Sorry, what I meant was more that he could be symbolic. A sort of coming of age story, you could say. But Yugi is indeed timid, and they do address his crush (well, sort of) but mainly, I see that as him growing more mature. Also, I don't remember him not growing in size in the manga. Maybe he didn't, but I remember the Pharaoh as taller and more imposing. Bashfrog (talkcontribs) 12:32, August 25, 2014 (UTC)Bashfrog

Sanokal K-T got it right regarding the pharaoh's identity as a ghost.

As for the rest of it, I think it's interesting -- comparing the pharaoh to Yugi in terms of age and development -- but you're overcomplicating things. It's not symbolism; it's just one guy who's older and more assertive alongside another guy who's neither of those things.

(That's no surprise, really. If I ruled a country, I should hope that I'd learned as soon as possible how to be assertive, experiences, and decisive.)

I've never liked the idea of the pharaoh and Yugi being the same person. Now, what Bashfrog said about Atem being an inspiration to Yugi -- yes, that works. And what Bashfrog said about Atem being a big brother figure to Yugi (who I suspect was lonely as an only child) -- yes, that works too. But their personalities and tempers are too different to say that they're the same person or ever would be the same. In fact, you could also say that Joey is a big brother figure to Yugi, but that doesn't mean Yugi would grow up to be just like him.

Also, I really liked the Ceremonial Duel's words on this (before, during, and after it.) In the Japanese version, Yugi's only name for the pharaoh was "the other me" -- at least when they first met, and for a long time after that. But during and after the Ceremonial Duel, it became apparent that Yugi had grown into a brave and confident individual... even though he was still gentler than Atem. In fact, his sensitivity gave him the insight to build up his own style of dueling strength. At the end, there is no "other Yugi." There is Yugi and Atem -- each of them his own man, dear friends but no less unique.

In summary: yeah, the pharaoh was a big inspiration for Yugi to grow up. He was a definite example of a way for Yugi to grow up. But in the end, the pharaoh was one man, and Yugi became a different one, each helped by each other but not defined by each other. --Okamoto Takeo (talkcontribs) 20:48, August 31, 2014 (UTC)
