At some point in the past, Tristan heard Joey was getting into a fight with some gang members while standing up for a kid and rushed to his aid. Though, they defeated them, Joey thought Tristan did it because he saw Joey as a child who can't stand up for himself. Years later, Joey realized Tristan only did he because he was a true friend who would never abandon Joey.<ref>{{episode|Yu-Gi-Oh!|11|ref}}</ref>
