"Hakai" is an archetype introduced in Chaos Impact, made up of Fiend monsters with various Attributes and centered around destroying cards for benefits, usually summoning monsters.

Etymology

The archetype's name is complex, multi-layered wordplay. First, in Japanese, it is an homophone to both 「破壊」 ("destroy"; fitting to their playstyle to say the least) and 「破戒」 ("breaking a religious commandment"; which together to the monsters' visual design might imply the members of the archetype are "tortured heretics"). In addition, the 「械」 kai kanji is part of 「機械」 kikai ("machine"), but also take the meaning of "fetter" if written separately (in which case it reads as kase), alluding to the many restraining devices on the monsters' bodies.

Playing style

"Hakai" focuses on using the effects of two of their Main Deck monsters, "Hakai Douji Arha" and "Hakai Douji Rakia", in order to destroy cards you control through 2 main methods; either Arha's effect from hand for his Special Summon or as a Quick Effect on the field with Rakia. The primary targets for these are the "Hakai" monsters and their Spells and Traps which, upon destruction, can Special Summon a "Hakai" monster from various locations; hand and Deck for the Level 3 Hakais when destroyed, GY for the Level 8 when destroyed, and Deck for the Spells and Traps when destroyed while Set. The main target one will be Special Summoning is the Main Deck boss monster; the Level 8 "Hakaishin no Magatama". Through the effect of Magatama, you can use itself alongside an opponent's monster to make the archetypal Link Monsters, the Link-2 "Hakaishin Ragia" and Link-3 "Hakaishin Arba". Ragia and Arba both require a Hakaishin monster to make, making Magatama an important monster to summon currently. Ragia and Arba also have their own Link Summoning effects using the opponent's monsters to reach the boss of this archetype; the Link-4 "Hakai Souohshin Raigou"

As of now, all Spells and Traps that support the "Hakai" monsters feature their own effects as well as an effect to summon a "Hakai" monster from the Deck if destroyed while Set. Such effects include a ROTA for any "Hakai" card, a OPT destruction when you Link Summon one of the Archetypal Link Monsters, destroying a "Hakai" monster and another card on the field, and finally summoning any Hakai monster from hand or GY.
