Card Rulings:Black Pendant

OCG Rulings
- The effect that increases the equipped monster's ATK by 500 does not start a Chain Link. (This is an effect that is applied to the equipped monster.)[1]
- The effect that inflicts 500 damage to your opponent activates in the Graveyard. (This effect does not target. It always activates if "Black Pendant" is sent from the field to the Graveyard. It also activates during the Damage Step.)[1]
- The player that takes the damage from this effect is the opponent of the owner of "Black Pendant". (Even if your "Black Pendant" is equipped to an opponent's monster, the player who would take the damage does not change.)[1]
- The effect of "Alector, Sovereign of Birds" will only negate effects that activate on the field, or that are applied as long as the monster remains on the field. It will not stop effects like those of "Sangan" or "Black Pendant" that activate when sent to the Graveyard.[2]
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind: If "Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind" targets a "Sangan" equipped with "Black Pendant" (1500 ATK), it will have 750 ATK. When "Black Pendant" is removed from the field, "Sangan" will still have 750 ATK.[3]
- Elemental HERO Great Tornado: Suppose "Sangan" which is equipped with "Black Pendant" (1500 ATK) has its ATK is halved by the effect of "Elemental HERO Great Tornado" (to 750). If "Black Pendant" is removed from the field, then the ATK of "Sangan" remains at 750.[4]
- Inverse Universe: When "Inverse Universe" resolves, its effect replaces the monster's ATK and DEF values.[5]
- Example: "Elemental Hero Neos Alius" (1900 ATK / 1300 DEF) is equipped with "Axe of Despair" (+1000 ATK). After "Inverse Universe" resolves, "Elemental Hero Neos Alius" will have 1300 ATK / 2900 DEF. These values do not change if "Axe of Despair" is destroyed. Afterwards, if "Elemental Hero Neos Alius" is then equipped with "Black Pendant" (+500 ATK), then "Elemental Hero Neos Alius" will have 1800 ATK.[5]
Previously Official Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been declared unofficial by Konami.[7] They were previously considered official and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules, or unless Konami has issued a ruling that says otherwise. - If this card is destroyed while face-down, it still does damage to your opponent.
- If this card's activation is negated, such as with "Magic Jammer" or "Riryoku Field" it does not do damage to your opponent.
- "Black Pendant" activates in the Graveyard, so if it is destroyed when "Imperial Order" is on the field, it still does damage to your opponent.
- You can chain to the activation of the effect of "Black Pendant" when it is sent to the Graveyard.
Mentions in Other Rulings
- 7: If other cards are also sent to the Graveyard at the same time, like ... "Black Pendant", the card controlled by the turn player is Step 1.
- Barrel Behind the Door: You cannot activate "Barrel Behind the Door" against... an Equip Spell Card... So you cannot activate it against..."Black Pendant".
- Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell: When you negate and destroy "Black Pendant" with "Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell", and afterwards a Set "Black Pendant" is destroyed, the effect of "Black Pendant" will not be activated (neither the "Black Pendant" that was negated nor the Set "Black Pendant" destroyed later will inflict 500 damage).
- Emergency Provisions: If you send "Black Pendant" to the Graveyard for the cost of "Emergency Provisions" its effect does activate.
- Magical Hats: If you select "Black Pendant", when it is destroyed during the end of the Battle Phase its effect activates, even if it was face-down.
- Necrovalley: "Necrovalley" will not negate effects that are activated when a card is sent to the Graveyard... So it will not negate the effects of..."Black Pendant"...
- Sasuke Samurai #2: While "Sasuke Samurai #2's" effect is active, you can't activate the effects of cards that activate in the Graveyard like "Black Pendant" and "Statue of the Wicked".
- Sonic Jammer: While "Sonic Jammer's" effect is applied, your opponent can still use the effects of "Wave-Motion Cannon", or "Black Pendant" when sent to the Graveyard...
- Spell Reclamation: If a Spell Card that has an effect that activates when it is sent to the Graveyard, like "Black Pendant" or "Lucky Iron Axe", is affected by "Spell Reclamation", that Spell Card's effect will activate, and it will be returned to its owner's hand before resolving the effect.
- Woodland Sprite: If you send "Black Pendant" to the Graveyard with this card's effect, the effect of "Black Pendant" will activate, because it does not have to be "destroyed", just sent to the Graveyard.
Judge List Rulings
- Limiter Removal: When a Machine-Type monster is equipped with equip cards like "Axe of Despair" or "Black Pendant", "Limiter Removal" will double the total ATK of the equipped Machine-Type monster. After doing so, the doubled ATK does not change if the Equipped Card is removed.[6]
