Forum:My son's Dragons

I got a ton of cards from a yard sale the other weekend and my son really wanted a Dragon Deck, so I went through the cards to make him one, and came up with one. The deck list will follow, but since it has been built it has only won one duel, it seems to run to slow, and a bit choppy. I was wondering if you guys could help me with making it run smoother. And I don't have Dark Armed Dragon and some of the other new dragons, I lost out on a Horus The Black Flame Dragon set on ebay. If the cards are expensive, I probably don't have them and may not be able to get them. Here is the deck list as it currently sits:

I was thinking of putting in a Mausoleum of the Emperor, a Field Barrier and a Terraforming but not sure if that is a good idea. Please help me out, it is for my son, whom I only get to have visit me for the summer. Thanks in advance for the help.

P.S. I do have an Armed Dragon LV7 on the way, which will probably take the place of one of the Red-Eyes B. Dragon

What I see in your deck for your son is a lot of different strategies meshed into one. You have a level monster, high attack normal monsters, Red-Eyes strategy, Dark Horus which is focused more on the Dark series than Dragons. Perhaps simplifying the theme. Make it easy to play with and compatible with a well organized theme, other than just a bunch of dragon cards. What I've learned is that flexibility in a deck is so much more efficient than any other strategy. Give the deck a card for every situation. If you need some more help, think about the overall themes of decks used on the show, like Kaiba's. His deck was a balanced deck (granted it had cartoon only cards as well) with lot's of push and pull during any given situation. Try that when tackling a dragon deck. I'm sure that giving it balance, and a much more specific theme will give you the results you are looking for.--Overlordzorc 17:44, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

  • First of all, I agree 100% with Overlordzorc. Decks without theme are 99% doomed from the start, except when they are not. It may take me some time to figure out a more decent strategy, but for now, how about focusing on summoning that FGD?
Remove:
Emissary from Pandemonium (keep this in Fiend Synchro decks)
Dragon Manipulator (what was this doing here anyway?)
Dragon Piper (good back in the day, not-so-good now. Actually it's bad, real bad)
Handcuffs Dragon (too circumstantial)
Lord of D. (the protection he offers is almost null)
Paladin of White Dragon (what is this doing in a deck with Red-Eyes?)
The Flute of Summoning Dragon (without Lord of D. this has no place here)
Dragon Treasure (lolwhut?)
Lighten the Load (not that many LV7s anyway)
White Dragon Ritual (self-explanatory)
Ground Collapse (only good in Ojama-Lock decks)
Tuner Capture (not that good)
Xing Zhen Hu (opponent can chain the cards, making this useless)
Level Retuner (lolwhut?)

Total = 14 cards.

Then, you can add:
Heavy Storm
Swords of Revealing Light
2 Waboku
1 Masked Dragon
Twin-Headed Behemoth
2 Koa'ki Meiru Drago
2 Bottomless Trap Hole
1 Dragon's Mirror
1 Miracle Fusion
Different Dimension Capsule (unless if you have a spare Gold Sarcophagus)
Strong Wind Dragon

Total = 14 cards.

Now, even with those changes, the deck will still not be good. It lacks just about everything a good deck must have. BUT it will be better than before. Unless if you want to make a dedicated build (i.e. Horus Decree lock / Hopeless Dragon / Blue-Eyes / Red-Eyes ) the deck will remain mediocre at best. This much I can tell with certainty. But the modifications I suggest will at least quadruple the deck's strength. It wasn't much to begin with, but now it will at least put up a fight. I'll try and think of some more changes and let you know. --Darth Covah (Talk | Contribs) 22:22, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Alright, here's a newer idea, though I haven't got some of the cards as of yet.

First thing's first, I have bought a Strong Wind Dragon from ebay, I am going to focus the deck on getting out Five-Headed Dragonso I am going to add possibly 3 Polymerizations, or would just 2 do. Also a Stardust Assault Mode. Any ideas on how to get the 8th level Synchros out quicker. I am going to check on some more Rose Warrior of Revenge's any other Tuner Monsters to put in

Additional Help

Hey there, sorry to hear you can only see your son every summer. Anyway, try to get the cards Darkcovah said to put in and take out the cards he said to take out. Stardust Dragon/Assault mode would help you stall, but only once per turn. As for getting out the Synchros faster, try to get a Rose Warrior (I have it and it rocks like crazy), 4 star tuners (Dragons if there are any more, idk) and a double summon. Like with Debris Dragon, Summon it, activate double summon, play a lvl 3 dragon, and summon out a Black Rose. Or, do the same thing but with rose warrior and a 4 star monster to bring out Stardust or RDA. Some tuners that may Help: Krebons, Counselor Lily, and other good tuners with effects. Adding Polymerization would be smart, but instead of putting 2, add a dragons mirror in place of of them. Hope this helps.

Eh. I tried this deck out with Index cards lol.

Ok I tried it with 5 Headed Dragon and polymerization and it's too slow. I like to use Future Fusion and Dragon's Mirror more because it's easier to have five dragons in the grave yard than on the field. Also since you're running Vanguard of the Dragon why not just add one more Vanguard of the Dragon and add in a few more normal monsters. It would work better also because then you can use Summoner's Art and Ancient Rules to add the normal monsters to your hand and summon. I've got a friend who uses this tactic and it works very well. and if you take out Flute of Summoning Dragon why not add in either a Burst Stream of Destruction or Inferno Fire Blast to inflict some damage. I also like Tiger Dragon just to get rid of spell and trap cards. If I think of any thing else I'll post here. I hope this helps. Most of the cards I mentioned aren't that expensive either.

Pure Deck?

Have to say most of what has been said has been very good advice. Have you considered making the deck pure dragons? While it does loose out on some bonus's other non dragon cards can give (Necro Gardna and Gorz spring to mind), I find a pure dragon deck seems to work pretty good..

Here's a link to my deck that I am currently using and seems to win 80% of matches I play with it.

Smaug's Deck

But ultimatley have you had any more thoughts on how you want to run the deck?
