Forum:Trap Priority

Ok so I was watching my friends play, and player A enters his battle phase, player B activates Threatening Roar, player A chains Dark Bribe, and then player B chains Trap Jammer

Now, player A says he cannot activate Trap Jammer because it isn't technically the battle phase, because he chained it to the change in phases. Then player B says he activated it when the battle phase started. Player A says he can attack first because he has turn priority then.

Somehow that sounds right, but I thought you could activate Threatening Roar at anytime, it doesn't have to respond to an event? — This unsigned comment was made by Batteriespwn (talkcontribs) 02:48, 9 July 2009

  • Threatening Roar can be activated at any time, except for during the Damage Step, because it does not alter an ATK or DEF value. There is no "in between" when it comes to phases. Once you are in the Battle Phase, you are in the Battle Phase. When it comes to turn priority, that only exists when using a cards effect. You cannot use priority to declare an attack. If priority was to work in the way that your friends made it, then your opponent would almost never have the chance to make a move during their opponent's turn, because he/she could dictate whether your opponent is correct on timing by changing what phase they are in using this so called "priority". See Breakdown of the Battle Phase and Priority for more information. Messengerofthedark 03:12, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Messengerofthedark

Hey, I was the player A in this case and the one who posted this is misrepresenting my argument. My argument in order to change phases the turn player has to pass priority to their opponent, allowing them to activate their cards as chain link 1 if they so choose. When a player says "I am entering my battle phase" the opponent is able to activate something before the phase is changed because he has to be given priority. That is when my friend activated Threatening Roar. Because this time is still considered to be main phase 1, he was unable to activate Trap Jammer because of the conditions written on the card.

Secondly, when I was in my battle phase I had priority. Priority is the right to make your effects chain link 1. My argument is not that my attack had priority but rather that my opponent did not have priority so he didn't have the right to make his effects chain link 1 unless he was responding to an event. Also, because no events happened during the battle phase, there was nothing to respond to with threatening roar. 97.97.128.14 17:34, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

If Player B agreed to enter the Battle Phase, then you are in the Start Step of the Battle Phase. Otherwise, you are still in the Main Phase.

Priority allows the turn player to act before the opponent. If you are not responding to anything, then you can use Priority to do anything normally allowed during that Phase/Step, such as declare an attack.

Wait.. so who's right? Batteriespwn 21:54, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

So, if A asks entering battle phase? And player B says no, and he is going to activate T-roar during the main phase. Then player A can still make moves such as activating normal spell cards. However, if both players agree to enter the battle phase, and player B choose to activate T-roar at the start step of the battle phase, then Player A can chain trap jammer. I can't say who is right or wrong, it depends on if you declared "entering battle phase" or not. War Pigg 01:02, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Well they both agreed that he entered the battle phase, and then player B activates t-roar at the start of the battle phase, player A chains dark bribe, and then player B chains trap jammer, player A says he can't do this, because of, well he posted above Batteriespwn 15:07, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Then Player A is wrong. Because trap jammer can be activated at anytime during the battle phase. War Pigg 04:51, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
state your name please. War Pigg 04:51, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
Well he is very persistent, and the question really is, can Threatening Roar be activated at the start of the battle phase, without responding to an event. Batteriespwn 15:07, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
  • Yes, not all traps have activation requirements, so those that don't can be activated if there is no action or event to respond to.207.118.148.118 15:10, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Messengerofthedark
Ok that sounds good, he just thinks that because he's the turn player, he has turn priority to make chain links 1's and his opponent cannot do that, but thank you. Batteriespwn 15:19, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
Who is correct depends on several things.
The game does not advance to the Battle Phase until both players agree. When Player A says that he is entering the Battle Phase, the opponent has to agree before you are actually in the Battle Phase. When Player A does this, he is passing Priority to his opponent. If Player B also passes Priority, then you advance.
If Player B just activated "Threatening Roar" without saying anything, then you're still in the Main Phase.
If Player B agreed, then you are in the Start Step. The Turn Player (Player A) has Priority to do anything allowed in the Start Step, which is just activate Spell Speed 2+ effects. If he wants to enter the Battle Step, then he must pass Priority to the opponent, who can activate his own Spell Speed 2+ cards (or pass and have the game advance to the Battle Step).
Once you are in the Battle Step, the Turn Player has Priority to do anything allowed in the Battle Step, which is attack or activate Spell Speed 2+ effects.
If Player B agreed, then you're in the Start Step, so Player B can activate "Trap Jammer".
If Player B did not say anything, then you're still in the Main Phase, so Player B cannot activate "Trap Jammer".

And it was agreed, so in this case player A is wrong.. for once. Batteriespwn 01:17, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Ok, one last question. Does the turn player have to pass priority before entering the battle step in the TCG? The only reason I ask this is because, according to the information on this site, there is no mention of having to pass priority before entering the battle step in the TCG, whereas there is that requirement is listed for the OCG. The TCG and OCG have different rules for conducting the battle phase so would this apply to those of us playing in the TCG? 97.97.128.14 02:38, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

This part of the Battle Phase is the same for both the TCG and the OCG. Both must pass Priority before you advance to the next Step/Phase. --Deus Ex Machina (Talk) 07:40, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
