The Valley of the Kings

The Valley of the Kings (おうたに Ōke no tani, literally "Valley of the Royal Family") is a location in Egypt in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. It is the burial location of Pharaohs from the New Kingdom era (1550 – 1070 B.C.), located West of the Nile and near Luxor. It is based on the real-world location.

History[edit]

At the beginning of the twentieth century, a British archaeological team found the Millennium Puzzle in a tomb in the valley. They removed it from a Pharaoh's crypt, but everyone on the team died a mysterious death with the last one uttering "the Shadow Games" in his dying breath.[1][2]

Sugoroku Mutou heard a legend of a hidden game room in the most dangerous tomb in history in the Valley of the Kings. And that untold honor and a puzzle that no one has solved awaits the one who conquers it. In the 1960s, Sugoroku accompanied by the graverobbers, Ahmet and Mushura, ventured to the tomb to retrieve the Millennium Puzzle. By this time over 60 tombs had been discovered and most of them were ransacked, but it was rumored that not one person made it to the depths of Atem's tomb. Sugoroku was led to the tomb, where he used his knowledge of gaming and Egyptian culture to navigate the party past the traps. Towards the end, Ahmet shot Sugoroku in an attempt to claim the treasure for himself, but was then consumed by a demon ka dwelling in a slab. The wounded Sugoroku was saved by an apparition of Atem, who mistook him for Siamun Muran. Sugoroku then made it to the room containing the disassembled Millennium Puzzle and was able to take it from the tomb.[2]

Professor Yoshimori was part of an expedition, sponsored by the museum curator, Kanekura. The expedition led to the discovery of a tomb from the New Kingdom Era (1580-1314 BC). The treasures and mummy were taken and put on display in the museum. However Kanekura allegedly stole treasures which he sold for his own profit. Shadi, a guardian of the valley, sought to punish Kanekura and Yoshimori for defiling the territory of the Gods and traveled to Japan to put them on trial.[3]
