A counterpart, also known as an evolution, upgrade, or retrain, is a card that is intentionally made similar to another earlier card in artwork, effect, and/or thematic identity. A counterpart card may have effects and stats that are stronger (e.g. "Mimicking Man-Eater Bug" to "Man-Eater Bug"), weaker (e.g. "Lightning Vortex" to "Raigeki"), or completely different (e.g. "Photon Orbital" to "Orbital 7") to its original counterpart.

Some card series and archetypes (e.g. Dark counterpart, "Malefic") exclusively consist of monster card counterparts with similar alterations between them. Some cards have Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel exclusive counterparts (e.g. "Mystic Roastman" to "Mystic Horseman").
